Using a 1.5-layer reduced-gravity nonlinear shallow-water equation model, we studied the effect of the meridional wind on the western boundary currents (WBC) at critical states with hysteresis courses. The results of the simulation indicate that the WBC is prone to penetrating into the gap under northerly winds, and its path is more difficult to alter due to the larger interval between the two critical transition curves (C1P and C1L). For southerly winds, the WBC is prone to leaping across the gap, and its path is easier to alter due to the smaller interval between the two critical transition curves. The simulation results also indicate that the meridional winds over the southern region of the gap are the dominant factor determining the formation of the WBC. The dynamic mechanism influencing the transport of WBC near the gap is both Ekman transport and the blocking of Ekman transport. Ekman transport induced by northerly winds may reduce the transport of the WBC, causing the β-effect to dominate the meridional advection (promoting the penetration). Southerly winds, however, may enhance the transport of the WBC, causing the meridional advection to dominate the β-effect (promoting the leaping state). These results explain some structural features of the Kuroshio at the Luzon Strait. 展开更多

This paper presents an analysis of the impact of wind on the transport of the Changiiang River Diluted Water (CRDW) in August by using the salinity data col- lected on two zonal sections near Cheju-do. Based on the climatological mean conditions and four extreme events, the analysis indicates that wind-induced Ekman transport plays an important role in the extension of the CRDW. The strong northeastward Ekman transport induced by southeasterly wind in 1996, 2003, 2004, and 2006 pushes the core of the CRDW to the sea adjacent to Cheju-do. A comparison of the wind variation before observation among these four extreme events indicates that the expan- sion pattern of the CRDW is primarily changed by synop- tic variation with tirnescales of days to weeks, such as during a typhoon. The weak eastward extension of the CRDW in 2004, accompanied with a relatively strong southerly wind, implies that the oceanographic state (e.g., the depth of halocline) may strongly affect the impact of wind on the extension of the CRDW. 展开更多

Land-surface conditions, such as surface roughness and SWC (soil-water content), control the saltation activity and dust emission in northeast Asia. Information on spatial and temporal changes in surface SWC is needed for dust-modeling systems used to predict dust events with the aim of preventing the damage they cause. A MTVDI (modified temperature-vegetation dryness index) was tested to see if it could reproduce the surface SWC observed in Zhangye, China, and the Tottori Sand Dunes of Japan, and the threshold wind speed at the Tottori Sand Dunes. MTVDI was calculated from land-surface temperature using the MODIS (moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer) product, and the aerodynamic minimum and maximum surface temperatures were estimated based on meteorological data. A greater correlation is seen between MTVDI and SWC than between SWC from AMSR-E (advanced microwave scanning radiometer-earth observing system) and SWC in Zhangye. The threshold wind speed for saltation activity decreased with increasing MTVDI, that is, with drying of the soil surface of the Tottori Sand Dunes. The correlation between MTVDI and threshold wind speed is statistically significant (R2 = 0.2987). 展开更多

The near-bed airflow and the movement of sand dune sediments by wind are fundamental dune geomorphological processes. This research measured the wind profiles and sand mass flux on the rounded top of a transverse dune at the southern edge of the Tengger Desert to examine how to best predict the vertical profile of sand flux. This work also tested the accuracy of previously developed models in predicting the apparent roughness length during saltation. Results show that mass flux vertical distribution over the dune top is underestimated by an exponential function, overestimated by a power function, but closely matches the predictions made using the LgstcDoseRsp function.Given suitable values ofα,βandγaccording to the grain size composition,S?rensen equation with the peaked shape of the mass transport curve will well predict the dimensionless mass flux qg/ρu*3against dimensionless shear velocity u*/u*t.The modified Charnock model works best of the previously published models tested, with an R2of 0.783 in predicting the enhanced roughness over the moving sand surface,as opposed to an R2of0.758 for the Owen model and an R2of 0.547 for the Raupach model. For the rounded dune top in this study,C m=0.446±0.016. 展开更多

By introducing a stochastic element to the double-jump diffusion framework to measure the Knight uncertainty of asset return process, this paper builds the model of dynamic portfolio choice, which maximizes the expected utility of terminal portfolio wealth. Through specifying the state function of uncertainty-aversion, it utilizes the max-min method to derive the analytical solution of the model to study the effect of the time-varying, jumps, and Knight uncertainty of asset return process on dynamic portfolio choice and their interactions. Results of comparative analysis show: The time-varying results in positive or negative intertemporal hedging demand of portfolio, which depends on the coefficient of investor's risk aversion and the correlation coefficient between return shift and volatility shift; the jumps in asset return overall reduce investor's demand for the risky asset, which can be enhanced or weakened by the jumps in volatility; due to the existing of the Knight uncertainty, the investor avoids taking large position on risky asset, and the resulting is the improving of portfolio's steady and immunity. At last, an empirical study is done based on the samples of Shanghai Exchange Composite Index monthly return data from January 1997 to December 2009, which not only tests the theoretical analysis but also demonstrates that the proposed method in the paper is useful from the aspect of portfotio's equivalent utility. 展开更多

The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) links upper ocean waters of the west Pacific and Indian Ocean, modulates heat and fresh water budgets between these oceans, and in turn plays an important role in global climate change. The climatic phenomena such as the East Asian monsoon and E1 Nifio-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exert a strong influence on flux, water properties and vertical stratification of the ITF. This work studied sediments of Core SO 18462 that was retrieved from the outflow side of the ITF in the Timor Sea in order to investigate response of the ITF to monsoon and ENSO activities since the last glacial. Based on Mg/Ca ratios and oxygen isotopes in shells of planktonic foraminiferal surface and thermocline species, seawater temperatures and salinity of both surface and thermocline waters and vertical thermal gradient of the ITF outflow were recon- structed. Records of Core SO18462 were then compared with those from Core 3cBX that was recovered from the western Pa- cific warm pool (WPWP). The results displayed that similar surface waters occurred in the Timor Sea and the WPWP during the last glacial. Since -16 ka, an apparent difference in surface waters between these two regions exists in salinity, indicated by much fresher waters in the Timor Sea than in the WPWP. In contrast, there is little change in difference of sea surface temper- atures (SSTs). With regard to thermocline temperature (TT), it increased until -11.5 ka since the last glacial, and then re- mained an overall unchanged trend in the WPWP but continuously decreased in the Timor Sea towards the late Holocene. Since ~6 ka, thermocline waters have tended to be close to each other in between the Timor Sea and the WPWP. It is indicated that intensified precipitation due to East Asian monsoon and possible ENSO cold phase significantly freshened surface waters over the Indonesian Seas, impeding the ITF surface flow and in turn having enhanced thermocline flow during the Holocene. Consequently, thermocline water of the ITF outflow was cooling and thermocline was shoaling towards the late Holocene. It is speculated that, in addition to strengthening of East Asian winter monsoon, increasing ENSO events during the late Holocene likely played an important role in influencing thermocline depth of the ITF outflow. 展开更多
