This paper treats the flow instabilities in a mixed flow pump with a vaned diffuser. Test pump has a positive slope of a head-flow performance curve at 65% flow rate of BEP (Best Efficiency Point) because of a rotating stall. Dynamic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and pressure fluctuation measurements are used for investigating the propagation mechanism of a rotating stall. It was found that unstable performance was caused by periodical large scale abrupt backflow generated from the vaned diffuser to the outlet of impeller. Further, the relation between the static pressure at the inlet of diffuser vane and the internal flow condition was clarified. From these experimental results, in order to improve the positive slope of a head-flow performance curve, to suppress the growth of strong vortex toward the inlet of diffuser vane was proved to be a key point. 展开更多

This paper reports a numerical study on the process from normal operating conditions to rotating stall in a centrifugal compressor with vaned diffuser. The purpose is to better understand the flow characteristics near stall point under the interactions between centrifugal impeller and vaned diffuser. Numerical results show that under certain conditions just preceding stall point the tip leakage vortex begins to fluctuate at roughly half of the blade passing frequency. This phenomenon is similar to rotating instability in axial compressors. With the flow rate reduced further the impeller stalls and five stall cells propagating at a frequency of 85 percent of impeller rotation speed are found. 展开更多

It is well known that tip leakage flow has a strong effect on the compressor performance and stability. This paper reports on a numerical investigation of detailed flow structures in an isolated transonic compressor rotor-NASA Rotor 37 at near stall and stalled conditions aimed at improving understanding of changes in 3D tip leakage flow structures with rotating stall inception.Steady and unsteady 3D Navier-Stokes analyses were conducted to investigate flow structures in the same rotor. For steady analysis, the predicted results agree well with the experimental data for the estimation of compressor rotor global performance. For unsteady flow analysis, the unsteady flow nature caused by the breakdown of the tip leakage vortex in blade tip region in the transonic compressor rotor at near stall condition has been captured with a single blade passage. On the other hand, the time-accurate unsteady computations of multi-blade passage at near stall condition indicate that the unsteady breakdown of the tip leakage vortex triggered the short length-scale-spike type rotating stall inception at blade tip region. It was the forward spillage of the tip leakage flow at blade leading edge resulting in the spike stall inception. As the mass flow ratio is decreased, the rotating stall cell was further developed in the blade passage. 展开更多

To get an insight into the occurrence and the mechanism of flow unsteadiness in the tip region of centrifugal compressor impellers, the flow in Krain’s impeller is investigated by using both steady and unsteady RANS solver techniques. It is found that the flow unsteadiness on the pressure side is much stronger than that on the suction side. The periodical frequency of the unsteady flow is around half of the blade passing frequency. The originating mechanism of the flow unsteadiness is illustrated with the time-dependent tip leakage flow and blade loading at the tip region. Due to the blockage caused by the joint effects of broken-downed tip leakage vortex, separated fluids and tip leakage flow at downstream, a low pressure region is formed on the pressure side, consequently the blade loadings is altered. In turn, the changed blade loadings will alter the intensity of tip leakage flow. Such alternative behavior finally results in the periodic process. By comparing the calculated flow field in the cases of single-passage and four-passage models, it is confirmed that the investigated flow unsteadiness is confined in each single passage, as no phase differences are found in the model of four passages. This is different from the situation in axial compressor when the rotating instability is encountered. The flow unsteadiness only occurs at the working conditions with small mass flow rates, and the oscillation intensity will be enhanced with the decrease of mass flow rate. When the mass flow rate is too small, the flow unsteadiness in a single passage may trigger rotating stall, as the disturbance propagates in the circumferential direction. 展开更多

Full-annulus three-dimensional unsteady numerical simulations were conducted for a low-speed isolated axialcompressor rotor, intending to identify the behavior of self-induced unsteady tip leakage flow within multi-bladepassages. There is a critical mass flow rate near stall point, below it, the self-induced unsteadiness of tip leakageflow can propagate circumferentially and thus initiates two circumferential waves. Otherwise, the self-inducedunsteady tip leakage flow oscillates synchronously in each single blade passage. The major findings are: 1) whilethe self-induced unsteadiness of tip leakage flow is a single-passage phenomenon, there exist phase shifts amongblade passages in multi-passage environments then evolving into the first short length wave propagating at abouttwo times of rotor rotation speed after the transient period ends; and 2) the time traces of the pseudo sensors locatedon the rotor blade tips reveal another much longer length-scale wave modulated with the first wave due tophase shift propagating at about half of rotor rotation speed. Features of the short and long length-scale circumferentialwaves are similar to those of rotating instability and modal wave, respectively. 展开更多

Previously the features of circumferential propagation of self-induced tip leakage flow unsteadiness for a low speed isolated axial compressor rotor in the authors' laboratory were discovered and investigated via numerical simulation, which only occurs below a critical stable flow point that is close to but not yet at the stall limit.Further in this paper, the detailed investigation on evolution of tip leakage flow during the throttling process into spike rotating stall was conducted by adopting the valve-throttling model.During this process, the development of the circumferential propagation of tip leakage flow unsteadiness was especially focused on.According to the unsteady characteristics of pressure signals, the evolvement of compressor flow field can be classified into four stages. As compressor throttled, the oscillation frequency of self-induced unsteady tip leakage flow decreased gradually, and thus resulted in the decrease of its circumferential propagation speed. The circumferential propagation of self-induced tip leakage flow unsteadiness is closely related with rotating instability. When the forward spillage of tip leakage flow at the leading edge occurred, the spike type rotating stall was initiated. Its flow struc-tures were given in the paper. 展开更多
