A transformation of naphthalene-based coalescenced mesophase pitch(NMP)to mesophase microbeads was achieved by heating a mixture of NMP and fullerene(C_(60)).This is different from the conventional process of the liqu...A transformation of naphthalene-based coalescenced mesophase pitch(NMP)to mesophase microbeads was achieved by heating a mixture of NMP and fullerene(C_(60)).This is different from the conventional process of the liquid-phase carbonization of isotropic pitch to the emergence of carbon microbeads in the matrix and finally their growth to form a 100%anisotropic bulk meso-phase,but rather a reverse transformation.The effects of C_(60) loading and reaction temperature on the morphological transformation of mesophase were investigated by polarizing optical and scanning electron microscopies.The physical changes in the NMP induced by C_(60) were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,X-ray diffractometry and Raman spectroscopy.The results show that the coalesced NMP can be converted to a spherical type at 300-320℃ with the addition of 5%C_(60),and the size of the mesophase microbeads increases with increasing temperature.Furthermore,a model is established to ex-plain the unique induction effect of C_(60) in the transformation process.This work makes the morphological transformation of MP con-trollable,and provides a new idea for the understanding and research of mesophase pitch.展开更多
In order to restrict non-yielding maneuvers of left-turning vehicles,an optimal design of left-lane line extensions is proposed to solve the problem.A field observation was conducted to collect a data set of left-turn...In order to restrict non-yielding maneuvers of left-turning vehicles,an optimal design of left-lane line extensions is proposed to solve the problem.A field observation was conducted to collect a data set of left-turning vehicles at the beginning of a green phase at two similar intersections(one with a permitted phase and the other with a protected phase).The comparative analysis shows no significant difference in the speed distribution using either a permitted phase or a protected phase,but it reveals that a permitted phase can lead to a larger acceleration when the left-turn vehicles pass through the conflict points.Those indicate the existence of non-yielding maneuvers of left-turn vehicles at signalized intersections with a permitted phase.Optimal designed left-lane line extensions contain two types of segments,circular curves and transition curves,and they are only related to four geometry parameters of an intersection.The proposed method is easy to use and it can offer reference for intersection channelization and traffic organization.展开更多

The investigation was performed by model testing under steady flow condition. As a result, it was found that the efficiency of the turbine with 3D guide vanes are slightly superior to that of the turbine with 2D guide vanes because of the increase of torque by means of 3D guide vane, though pressure drop across the turbine for the 3D case is slightly higher than that for the 2D case.展开更多

A ...Experimental investigations were carried out on a two-dimensional cascade fitted with a 120° deflection rotor blades to study the effect of incidence angle on the endwall flow in the presence of tip clearance. A total of five incidence angles, namely: -10°,-10° -5°, 0°, 5° , 10° were chosen and for each incidence angle, the experiments were conducted for five tip clearance values at a constant space -chord ratio of 0.79. The results are presented in the form of contours of static pressure coefficient on the endwall and the blade tip surface. In addition, the variation of static pressure coefficient ahead of the blade leading edge and from the pressure surface to the suction surface at various axial stations, and discharge coefficient gi different axial stations are presented. The results indicate that the adverse pressure gradient upstream of the leading edge is reduced as tip clearance is increased. The contours of static pressure coefficient on the endwall indicate a deep low-pressure trough near the suction surface in comparison to the normal trough for zero clearance. Loading also increases as incidence changes from the negative to positive values. Due to area contraction caused by the tip separation vortex, the fluid moving towards the tip gap from the pressure side is accelerated. Downstream of the tip separation vortex, the endwall pressure increases due to flow mixing. The maximum value of discharge coefficient increases and the point at which maximum value occurs shifts towards leading edge when incidence is changed from -10° to 10°.展开更多
