The strength characteristics of a diatomaceous soft rock is investigated. The friction angle and cohesion of soft rock are mobilized as a function of plastic strain. A hyperbolic hardening function for the mobilized friction and a mixed parabolic and exponential equation for the mobilized cohesion are proposed. In view of the unified strength theory and the mobilizations of strength components, a yield function is given. A plastic potential function is determined by using the non-associated plastic flow rule. An elasto-plastic constitutive model is developed and verified. The results indicate that the proposed model can predict the behavior of soft rock accurately. The advantages of the proposed constitutive model are analyzed. The evidences support that the proposed constitutive model is a mixed hardening/softening model. A hump hardening/softening function for mobilized friction is extended to a more generalized condition.展开更多

At the same time, the three fundamental approaches for controlling the surrounding rock are proposed, which are improving the surrounding rock strength, lowering the rock mass stress and selecting the reasonable supporting technology. The research results are elucidated, including the distribution of the surrounding rock plastic zone, the movement and damage of the surrounding rock under the dynamic pressure, controlling the floor heave through reinforcing the roadway walls and corners, the new route to develop the roadway metal supporting technique, the key theory and technique for the bolt supporting in the coal roadway, the performance and prospect of the ZKD high water content quick setting material, and so on. Finally, some personally views are put forward about the roadway metal supporting, bolt supporting, new material and the stress relief under the high stress condition.展开更多

A hexahedral element and a strain hardening/softening constitutive model based on the unified strength theory(UST) were used to simulate both the consolidated-undrained(CU) triaxial and the consolidated-drained(CD) true triaxial tests. Based on the results of the true triaxial tests simulation, the effect of the intermediate principal stress on the strength of soft rock was investigated. Finally, an example of an axial compression test for a hard rock pillar with a soft rock interlayer was analyzed using the two-dimensional finite difference code FLAC. The CD true triaxial test simulations for diatomaceous soft rock suggest the peak and residual strengths increase by 30% when the effect of the intermediate principal stress is taken into account. The axial compression for a rock pillar indicated the peak and residual strengths increase six-fold when the soft rock interlayer approached the vertical and the effect of the intermediate principal stress is taken into account.展开更多
