A 1.3μm low-threshold edge-emitting AlGaInAs multiple-quantum-well(MQW) laser with AlInAs-oxide confinement layers is fabricated.The Al-contained waveguide layers upper and low the active layers are oxidized as current-confined layers using wet-oxidation technique.This structure provides excellent current and optical confinement,resulting in 12.9mA of a low continuous wave threshold current and 0.47W/A of a high slope efficiency of per facet at room temperature for a 5-μm-wide current aperture.Compared with the ridge waveguide laser with the same-width ridge,the threshold current of the AlInAs-oxide confinement laser has decreased by 31.7% and the slope efficiency has increased a little.Both low threshold and high slope efficiency indicate that lateral current confinement can be realized by oxidizing AlInAs waveguide layers.The full width of half maximum angles of the Al-InAs-oxide confinement laser are 21.6° for the horizontal and 36.1° for the vertical,which demonstrate the ability of the AlInAs oxide in preventing the optical field from spreading laterally. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effects of icariin on apoptosis and the expression of Fas, Fas ligand(Fas L), B cell lymphoma(Bcl-2), and Bcl-2-associated X protein(Bax) in CD4+ T lymphocytes from patients with ankylosing spondylitis.METHODS:Primary cultures of peripheral blood CD4+ T lymphocytes were established and treated with icariin at high, medium, and low doses(0.5,0.25, and 0.125 mg/mL).Sulfasalazine treated and helthy cells were used as controls.Apoptosis of treated cells was determined by flow cytometry.Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to determine the effects of icariin on the expression of Fas, Fas L, Bcl-2, and Bax.The activity of caspase 8 and caspase 3 was determined by a colorimetric assay.RESULTS:The m RNA and protein expression of Fas,and activity of caspase 8 and caspase 3 in CD4+ T lymphocytes were increased by icariin(P < 0.05).Conversely, the m RNA and protein expression of Bcl-2 was decreased(P < 0.05).The expression of Fas L and Bax were not significantly different between groups.The proapoptotic effects of icariin were dose-dependent.CONCLUSION:Icariin induces the apoptosis of CD4 + T cells from patients with AS comparing to normal control.Therefore, the induction of apoptosis may be the likely mechanism of action of icariin's antirheumatics activities. 展开更多

Variational finite element approach to study the thermal stress in multi-layered human head

One of the disturbing factors of brain... The human head is one of the most sensitive parts of human body due to the fact that it contains brain. Any abnormality in the functioning of brain may disturb the entire system. One of the disturbing factors of brain is thermal stress. Thus, it is imperative to study the effects of thermal stress on human head at various environmental conditions. For the thermoregulation process, the human head is considered to be a structure of four layers viz.; brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), skull and scalp. A mathematical model has been formulated to estimate the variation of temperature at these layers. The model is based on radial form of bio-heat equation with the appropriate boundary conditions and has been solved by variational finite element method. The rate of metabolic heat gen- eration and thermal conductivity in this study have been assumed to be heterogeneous. The results were compared with the experimental studies for their coincidence and it has been observed theoretically and experimentally that the human head has greater resistance to compete with the thermal stress up to large extent. 展开更多
