AIM:To evaluate the effect of suspended moxibustion(SM) on rectal sensory thresholds and to analyze the possible mechanisms involved in SM treatment of chronic visceral hypersensitivity(CVH) in rats.METHODS:SM was administered once daily to 37-dold CVH rats for 7 d.The two pairs of acupoints(ST25 and ST37,bilateral) were simultaneously treated with SM.Each treatment lasted for 30 min.Rats undergoing treatment with SM were not anesthetized.Untreated CVH rats and normal rats were used as controls.The abdominal withdrawal reflex was determined 30-90 min after the seven treatments.The hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone(CRH) mRNA level was measured using real-time quantitative reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction.RESULTS:We found that SM treatment significantly decreased visceral sensitivity to colorectal distention in this rat model.In treated animals,SM also decreased the relative hypothalamic CRH mRNA expression level to control levels.CONCLUSION:Lower hypothalamic CRH levels may mediate the beneficial effects of SM in this rat irritable bowel syndrome model. 展开更多

Alpha-picolinic acid (PA),a metabolite of tryptophan and an inducer of apoptosis in the animal cell,has been reported to be a toxin produced by some of plant fungal pathogens and used in screening for disease resistant mutants. Here,we report that PA is an efficient apoptosis agent triggering cell death of hypersensitive-like response in planta. Confirmed by Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter (FACS),rice suspension cells and leaves exhibited programmed cell death induced by PA. The PA-induced cell death was associated with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species that could be blocked by diphenylene iodonium chloride,indicating that the generation of reactive oxygen species was NADPHoxidase dependent. We also demonstrated the induction of rice defense-related genes and subsequent resistant enhancement by PA against the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea. Hence,it was concluded that the PA-stimulated defense response likely involves the onset of the hypersensitive response in rice,which also provides a simple eliciting tool for studying apoptosis in the plant cell. 展开更多

The prediction of precipitation depends on accurate modeling of terrestrial transpiration.In recent decades,the trait-based plant hydraulic stress scheme has been developed in land surface models,in order to better predict the hydraulic constraint on terrestrial transpiration.However,the role that each plant functional trait plays in the modeling of transpiration remains unknown.The importance of different plant functional traits for modeled transpiration needs to be addressed.Here,the Morris sensitivity analysis method was implemented in the Common Land Model with the plant hydraulic stress scheme(CoLM-P_(50)HS).Traits related to drought tolerance(P_(50);),stomata,and photosynthesis were screened as the most critical from all 17 plant traits.Among 12 FLUXNET sites,the importance of P_(50);,measured by normalized sensitivity scores,increased towards lower precipitation,whereas the importance of stomatal traits and photosynthetic traits decreased towards drier climate conditions.P_(50);was more important than stomatal traits and photosynthetic traits in arid or semi-arid sites,which implies that hydraulic safety strategies are more crucial than plant growth strategies when plants frequently experience drought.Large variation in drought tolerance traits further proved the coexistence of multiple plant strategies of hydraulic safety.Ignoring the variation in drought tolerance traits may potentially bias the modeling of transpiration.More measurements of drought tolerance traits are therefore necessary to help better represent the diversity of plant hydraulic functions. 展开更多

In field and laboratory conditions the reproductive potential (survival at different stages of development) of the Colorado potato beetle has been measured, the dependence of the parameters of insects fertility on varietal features of the feed has been investigated, the food activity of the representatives of insects from four areas of the Southern Urals has been measured, the intensity and time of hypersensitivity reactions on potato leaves has been defined. In laboratory experiments, the level of activity of hydrolytic enzymes in insects and the level of activity of these enzymes inhibitors in the leaves of three potato varieties differing in their resistance to the Colorado potato beetle have been determined. The results show that the insects-representatives of different samples have different food activity in relation to different potato varieties. High mortality rates were revealed at feeding with leaves of potato of the Bashkir variety characterized by a high level of hydrolases inhibitors and relatively rapid development of necrotic reactions after the appearance of eggs laying on the leaves. We suppose that the neerogenetic barrier appearing in the form of necrosis is the major cause of the fetal mortality of insects. The level of the content of inhibitors inactivating larvae digestive enzymes affects the survival of insects at postembryonic stages. The speed of the necrosis emergence, the level of activity of digestive enzymes inhibitors in potato can be considered as criteria for the selection of breeding material for resistance to the Colorado potato beetle. 展开更多
