For enough time to desorb, it is important to study the relationship between the residence time of liquid in rotating bed and the material diffusion time of liquid droplet in desorption process. By theoretical deduction, the exponential relation between residence time and liquid flow rate and rotational speed and kinematic viscosity is obtained. By analyzing the solution of nonlinear partial differential equation, the time law of material diffusion in the droplet is obtained. Moreover, by comparing the residence and diffusion times, the diffusion time can be within or out of residence time range, which has a direct relationship to rotational speed and liquid flow. By experiment, the comparison between residence and diffusion times is more realistic when the rotational speed is higher.展开更多

The study focuses on anti-globalization protest events over a period of seven years following the 1999 Seattle protest, and covers all major protests until the end of 2006. Framing is used to explore how bias is instituted in media texts and whether this pattern is consistent across the corpus. Results of this study reveal that the framing strategies of journalists regarding AGM protests all revolve around two forms of memory-based framing tools: explicit and implicit. Explicit memory-based framing strategies refer to the coverage of previous events whereas implicit strategies involve the use of repeated connotations and metaphors applied consistently over the years, recalling previous insinuations made by a biased media system.展开更多

We conducted a semantic and syntactic analysis of these shifts in which we observed: a change in the syntactic valuation of ba and hevi, the semantic characteristic of the nominal collocations which form their syntactic setting, and the semantic connection between their original and new meanings. The article starts out with a presentation of the original meanings of the two verbs as belonging to the family of concrete verbs of motion. It then presents the semantic shifts each undergoing from designating motion to designating giving, existing, and modality (capability, intent and aspect) and concludes with the categorical shift of the verb ba to impersonal (ロ"λ∏) and to discourse marker. It is noteworthy that in each of the shifts observed we noticed relation between the meaning stemming from the shift and the original meaning of ba and hevi as verbs of motion. We were able to prove that the original meaning is still echoed both in the semantic and category categorical shifts.展开更多

It can be seen from Pynchon's dramatic, sometimes fantastic narratives about these movements that the failure of the countercultural movements lies in their illusive nature in contrast with the hypocrisy and disproportionate power of the government to destruct these movements, and that the presence of American racial problems results to a great degree from the sloth prevailing over various institutions in American society when dealing with racial inequality and from American white racists' desire to eliminate an imagined threat in the face of the minorities. This paper tries to provide a different understanding that Pynchon's writing of the marginalized or surrealistic issues in these countercultural and civil rights movements is his strategy to expose the falsehood of American myth of democracy.展开更多

To investigate the peak latency of the orbital presaccadic spike potential (SP) with horizontal eye movement in normals.Methods. Orbital SP was recorded in 28 normal subjects from 8 electrodes around the eyes with Pz as the reference while performing 5°, 10°, 20°, 30° and 40°horizontal saccades to visual targets. SP peak latency was measured from SP onset to SP peak on averaged data aligned on SP peak.Results. Significant main effects on SP peak latency are found for saccade size (<0. 01), saccade direction (P<0. 01) and electrode site (P<0. 05). No significant main effect on SP peak latency is found for eye (P>0. 05). SP peak latency increases with increasing saccade size from 5°to 40°. SP peak latency is longer with saccades back to center than away from center, and with abducting saccades than with adducting saccades. SP peak latency differs at the electrode sites with an order from shorter to longer as follows: inner canthus (IC); inferior orbit (IO): outer canthus (OC); superior orbit (SO).Conclusicos. The effects on the peak latency of orbital SP can be explained by the saccade dynamic property, volume conduction as well as physiologic and anatomic factors of the eyes and orbits. The peak latency of orbital SP can be used to reflect the temporal characteristics of ocular motor units controlling saccadic eye movement.展开更多

On this basis, the author pointed out the following points: ① In recent decades, ML, mb (mH ), Ms magnitude scales are widely used as measures of earthquake size. However, these magnitude scales have a deficiency of "overgeneralization" and "magnitude saturation". Moreover, since they do not fully take into account the regional difference of seismic attenuation, especially the difference of site effects on the amplification of ground motion, these magnitude scales are but inaccurate measures of earthquake size. ② Seismic moment M0 not only has clear physical meaning, but also overcomes the deficiencies existing in ML, mb (mB ) and Ms magnitude scales, so it is the most suitable physical quantity for measuring earthquake size scientifically. In order to continue to use the term "magnitude", Kanamori defined the moment magnitude scale Act. Although its prerequisite assumptions remain to be studied, it is still a reasonable scale used as a measure of the relative size of an earthquake. ③ For measuring the earthquake size more scientifically, we must make full use of a large amount of waveform data from modern regional digital seismograph networks, strengthen the research on seismic wave attenuation characteristics, site effect, calculation of source parameters and the related scaling relations. In improving the measurement methods for ML, mb (mB ) and Ms magnitude, we should focus on the improvement of Mw scale and carry forward the work as gradually taking Mw magnitude scale as the uniform physical quantity to measure the relative size of earthquakes, so as to lay a more solid foundation for research in earthquake science and earthquake prediction.展开更多

We will focus on the maxim of pragmatism, in which the elements of every concept enter into logical thinking through the doors of perception and leave through the doors of utilitarian actions. In this paper, we investigate the formation of a habit able to manage collective actions on a soccer field. The efficiency of this habit is related to collateral experience shared among soccer players: characteristics of high performance sports training. This unique experience orchestrates perceptions and reasoning, leading to efficient combination of conclusions and influences collective actions. We will analyze the concept that we call avalanche in bow-arrow applied to the 1970's Brazilian soccer team.展开更多

Historically, "movement culture" has been used to create a collective climate and offered political activists a springboard to discuss with the masses the benefits of joining a social movement. "Beyond the Dreams of Loveliness" uses the cultural outlet of film and the labor movement in the city of Detroit as analytical tools to examine working class community resistance throughout the 1930s. In the midst of the "golden age of film" community activists and union organizers--some of whom were well-known radicals and some of whom were mainstream unionists--used the institution of cinema to instill a level of class consciousness in the masses and mobilize the working class community against exploitation of employers, reactionary politicians, and white supremacist organizations. Movie-going had been a very popular form of recreation in Detroit since the 1920s and downtown theatres increasingly became the destination of an eclectic array of workers. Movie theaters themselves were bastions of community activity around the thirties and many were located in the heart of the city's working class district. Yet it was the films themselves that offered community activists and unionists a chance to converse with workers regarding the socio-economic matters of the day. Hollywood released a good number of films that dealt with working class issues and provided activists with ample opportunities to "instruct" the audience and carry on the discussion into the factory or union halls. "Beyond the Dreams of Loveliness" relies on a combination of oral histories, movie reviews, film clips, and union and/or working class organizational records to illuminate how activists in Detroit's working class community used film as an outlet to inspire working class resistance. In sum, film provided an accessible form of entertainment that proved to be effective on two fronts: It promoted increased group cooperation, friendship, and alliances while it also fostered a shared culture, making it easier for activists to organize workers in the coming struggles for unionism.展开更多

Such activities include typing on a keyboard, maneuvering a computer mouse, playing musical instruments (such as piano and guitar) and many forms of manual labor. The pain is dull and diffuse; It is localized in the forearm or in the hand but quickly can expand to the entire extremity. Non-specific arm pain is the most frequent type of work-related pain after lower-back pain. It thus has important socio-economic significance as a major cause of absence from work. The designation of "non-specific" originates from the fact that it has no obvious signs of tissue damage, unlike the "specific" pain accompanying carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosinovitis de Quervain, or lateral epicondylitis. Suggested causes of the pain include microtrauma of soft tissue followed by an inflammatory reaction, ischemia, fatigue, hyper-sensitization of nociceptors, focal dystonia of the hand and/or psychological stress. Treatment consists of application of NSAIDs, physical modalities, stretching and aerobic exercises. Prevention focuses on ergonomic modification during manual labor or work on a computer.展开更多

In the calibration processing, well-structured identification Jacobian matrix construction and end-effector position and orientation measurement are two main difficulties. In this paper, the identification Jacobian matrix is constructed easily by numerical calculation utilizing the unit virtual velocity method. The generalized distance errors model is presented for avoiding measuring the position and orientation directly which is difficult to be measured. At last, a measurement tool is given for acquiring the data points in the calibration processing. Experimental studies confirmed the effectiveness of method. It is also shown in the paper that the proposed approach can be applied to other typed parallel manipulators.展开更多
