Experimental tests were conducted to evaluate the hydrodynamic performance of an L-type podded propulsor in straight-ahead motion and off-design conditions using an open-water measuring instrument developed by the authors for podded propulsors, a ship model towing tank, and under water particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement systems. Under the three types of conditions, the main parameters of an L-type podded propulsor were measured, including the propeller thrust and torque, as well as the thrust, side force, and moment of the whole pod unit.In addition, the flow field on the section between the propeller and the strut was analyzed. Experimental results demonstrate that the dynamic azimuthing rate and direction and the turning direction affect the forces on the propeller and the whole pod unit. Forces are asymmetrically distributed between the left and right azimuthing directions because of the effect of propeller rotation. The findings of this study provide a foundation for further research on L-type podded propulsors. 展开更多

Piezoelectric nanowires have attracted much scientific interest in the last few years because of their enhanced piezoelectric coefficients at nanometer scale, with promises of efficient mechanical energy harvesters for autonomous integrated systems. This paper presents the design and, for the first time, guideline rules, based on simple analytical expressions, to improve the performance of a mechanical energy harvester integrating vertical ZnO piezoelectric nanowires. Additional simulations were carried out to account more realistically for device geometry. The authors discuss the prospects of such an approach, based on design and material improvement. 展开更多

This paper addresses the composite nonlinear feedback(CNF) control for a class of singleinput single-output nonlinear systems with input saturation to track a time varying reference target with good transient performance. The CNF control law consists of a tracking control law and a performance compensator. The tracking control law is designed to drive the output of the system to track the time varying reference target rapidly, while the performance compensator is used to reduce the overshoot caused by the tracking control law. The stability of the closed-loop system is established. The design procedure and the improvement of transient performance of the closed-loop system are illustrated with a numerical example and the controlled Van del Pol oscillator. 展开更多
