Cascade multilevel inverters have been developed for electric utility applications. A cascade M level inverter consists of (M 1)/2 H bridges in which each bridge's dc voltage is supported by its own dc capacitor. The new inverter can: (1) generate almost sinusoidal waveform voltage while only switching one time per fundamental cycle; (2) dispense with multi pulse inverters' transformers used in conventional utility interfaces and static var compensators; (3) enables direct parallel or series transformer less connection to medium and high voltage power systems. In short, the cascade inverter is much more efficient and suitable for utility applications than traditional multi pulse and pulse width modulation (PWM) inverters. The authors have experimentally demonstrated the superiority of the new inverter for power supply, (hybrid) electric vehicle (EV) motor drive, reactive power (var) and harmonic compensation. This paper summarizes the features, feasibility, and control schemes of the cascade inverter for utility applications including utility interface of renewable energy, voltage regulation, var compensation, and harmonic filtering in power systems. Analytical, simulated, and experimental results demonstrated the superiority of the new inverters. 展开更多

Ni/YSZ fuel electrodes can only operate under strongly reducing conditions for steam elec- trolysis in an oxide-ion-conducting solid oxide electrolyzer (SOE). In atmosphere with a low content of H2 or without H2, cathodes based on redox-reversible Nb2TiO7 provide a promising alternative. The reversible changes between oxidized Nb2TiO7 and reduced Nbl.33Tio.6704 samples are systematically investigated after redox-cycling tests. The conductivities of Nb2TiO7 and reduced Nb1.33Tio.6704 are studied as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure and correlated with the electrochemical properties of the composite electrodes in a symmetric cell and SOE at 830 ℃. Steam electrolysis is then performed using an oxide-ion-conducting SOE based on a Nb1.33Ti0.6704 composite fuel electrode at 830 ℃. The current-voltage and impedance spectroscopy tests demonstrate that the reduction and activation of the fuel electrode is the main process at low voltage; however, the steam electrolysis dominates the entire process at high voltages. The Faradic efficiencies of steam electrolysis reach 98.9% when 3%H2O/Ar/4%H2 is introduced to the fuel electrode and 89% for that with introduction of 3%H2O/Ar. 展开更多

Spectral Calculation of the Output Voltage of an Inverter with Bipolar Pulse Width Modulation

Converters with pulse width modulation are used for connections between the direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) networks, e.g., in uninterrupted power supply systems, AC electromotor drives, for powering induction furnaces, in audio technique. Spectrum of signals sampled by pulse amplitude modulation and output voltage spectrum of the converter with pulse width modulation have similar properties. Spectrum of signals sampled by pulse amplitude modulation contains a harmonic of frequency equal to the frequency of the modulating signal and the harmonics of frequencies equal to the sum of frequency of the modulating signal and multiples of the sampling frequency. The output voltage spectrum of the converter with bipolar pulse width modulation contains harmonic of frequency equal to the frequency of the modulating signal and harmonics of frequencies equal to sum of the frequency of the modulating signal and multiples of the frequency of the carrier signal. It also contains harmonics of frequencies equal to the sum of the multiples of the frequency of the modulating signal and the multiples of the carrier signal. The comparison analysis was carried out for the harmonics of the output voltage of the converter with bipolar pulse width modulation in time domain. The dependency of the amplitudes and frequency spectrum on the wave forms of the carrier signal and modulating signal was shown. Similarity of the output voltage spectrum of the converter and signal spectrum sampled by the pulse width modulation was also shown. The ever-growing market demands for lithium ion batteries have stimulated numerous research efforts aiming at the exploration of novel electrode materials with higher capacity and long-term cycling stability.Two-dimensional (2D)nanomaterials and their heterostructures are an intense area of study and promise great potential in electrochemical lithium storage owing to their unique properties that result from structural planar confinement.Here we report a microwave chemistry strategy to integrate ultrathin SnO2 nanosheets into graphene layer to construct surface-to-surface 2D heterostructured architectures,which can provide unique structural planar confinement for highly reversible electrochemical lithium storage.The as-synthesized 2D SnO2/graphene heterostructures can exhibit high reversible capacity of 688.5mAh g^-1 over 500cycles with excellent long-term cycling stability and good rate capability when used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries.The present work definitely reveals the advantages of 2D heterostructures featured with a surface-to-surface stack between two different nanosheets in energy storage and conversion devices. 展开更多

Inverter-fed traction motors,which are employed for electric-multiple-units(EMUs),are subjected to Pulse Width Modulated(PWM) impulse voltage.Impulse voltage has fast rise/fall time and high repetition frequency.The failure mechanism of insulation under impulses is different from that of standard 50 Hz sinusoidal condition.Partial discharge(PD) characteristics(discharge number,mean discharge quantity and phase resolved partial discharge(PRPD) pattern) with different frequencies and different rise times of impulse voltage were investigated.The results reveal that discharge number and mean discharge quantity increase,while PRPD pattern moves to the zero of impulse voltage with decrease of rise time.Discharge number and PRPD pattern follow that trend with increase of frequency,the value of mean discharge quantity is similar.Memory effect of the deposited space charges on PD was studied.PRPD pattern moves to the zero of bipolar impulse voltage due to the role of space charges,with increase of frequency and decrease of rise time.It is revealed that available discharge time is prolonged and overvoltage across the cavity increases with augment of frequency,which results in discharge number increasing.Under the condition of shortening the rise time,with the same statistical time lag tL,△V would increase if dV/dt is higher,which results in enhancement of discharge quantity.Discharge number increases with reduction of rise time,because the decreased multiple of td is lower than the increased multiple of dV/dt.Study of PD characteristics and role of space charges is helpful to the exploration of the destructive mechanism of insulating materials under bipolar impulse. 展开更多
