Its existence in youth sports like soccer is well established. Why it occurs has not been identified, however, one thought is that older players, generally taller and heavier, are thought to improve the team's chances of winning. To test this assumption, birth dates and match outcome were correlated to see if teams with the oldest mean age had a systematic advantage against teams with younger mean ages. Methods: Player birth dates and team records (n = 5943 players on 371 teams; both genders; U11-U16) were obtained from the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association for the highest level of statewide youth competition. Results: The presence of an RAE was demonstrated with significant oversampling from players born in the I st vs. the 4th quarter (overall: 29.6% vs. 20.9% respectively, p 〈 0.0001). Mean team age was regressed on match outcomes (winning %, points/match, points/goal, and goals for, against, and goal difference), but there was no evidence of any systematic influence of mean team age and match outcomes, except possibly in U11 males. Conclusion: Selecting players based on physical maturity (and subsequently, on age) does not appear to have any systematic influence on match outcome or season record in youth soccer suggesting that the selection process should be focused on player ability and not on physical maturation.展开更多

Nowadays, the level of competitive swimming is in a time of rapid advance. How to make a scientific selection is a task which is worth deeply researching. It is quite important to make a scientific and modem selection according to the features and trends of swimming events. To carry out specific and scientific selection according to the athletes in Liaoning' s characteristic is the basis for bringing up first-class athletes. Hope that this study can provide some theoretical support for the scientific selection of swimmers.展开更多

Disregarding the London stage entirely, it invited regional theatres throughout the UK to put forward nominations for new plays within their repertoire for 1950-1951. Each of the five winning plays would receive, what was then, the substantial sum of ~100. Originality and innovation featured highly amongst the selection criteria, with 40 per cent of the judges' marks being awarded for "interest of subject matter and inventiveness of treatment". This article will assess some of the surprising outcomes of the competition and argue that it served as an important nexus point in British theatrical historiography between two key moments in post-war Britain: the first being the inauguration of the Festival of Britain in 1951, the other being the debut of John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in May 1956. The article will also argue that the Arts Council's play competition was significant for two other reasons. By circumventing the London stage, it provides a useful tool by which to reassess the state of new writing in regional theatre at the beginning of the 1950s and to question how far received views of parochialism and conservatism held true. The paper will also put forward a case for the competition significantly anticipating the work of George Devine at the English Stage Company, which during its early years established a reputation for itself by heavily exploiting the repertoire of new plays originally commissioned by regional theatres. This article forms part of a five year funded Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) project, 'Giving Voice to the Nation: The Arts Council of Great Britain and the Development of Theatre and Performance in Britain 1945-1994'. With such a wealth of methods, it can be difficult for a researcher to know what model selection approach is the proper way to proceed to select the appropriate model for prediction. The authors present an evaluation of various model selection criteria from decision-theoretic perspective using experimental data to define and recommend a criterion to select the best model. In this analysis, six of the most common selection criteria, nineteen friction factor correlations, and eight sets of experimental data are employed. The results show that while the use of the traditional correlation coefficient, R2 is inappropriate, root mean square error, RMSE can be used to rank models, but does not give much insight on their accuracy. Other criteria such as correlation ratio, mean absolute error, and standard deviation are also evaluated. The AIC (Akaike Information Criterion) has shown its superiority to other selection criteria. The authors propose AIC as an alternative to use when fitting experimental data or evaluating existing correlations. Indeed, the AIC method is an information theory based, theoretically sound and stable. The paper presents a detailed discussion of the model selection criteria, their pros and cons, and how they can be utilized to allow proper comparison of different models for the best model to be inferred based on sound mathematical theory. In conclusion, model selection is an interesting problem and an innovative strategy to help alleviate similar challenges faced by the professionals in the oil and gas industry is introduced.展开更多

The average fruit weight is65.5 g, and the maximum value is 106 g. The flesh is orange, fine with very less fiber, toughness, less juice and freestone, and tastes sour and sweet. The soluble solid content is 12.5%. The edible rate is 95.8%. The fruit skin hardness is 12.9 kg/cm2 and storable. The preserved apricots have orange color and are tasty. The preserved yield is 40%. The fruit development period is 72 d. The fruit has high yield, and the fruit yield in full fruit period can reach 37 000 kg/hm2. ‘Jinxiu' was examined and approved by Hebei Examination and Approval Committee of Forest Tree Variety in 2013.展开更多

The authors hold the opinion that an organization can screen the candidates' signaling based on the self-selection principle by providing an appropriate compensation choice. A pay-based screening mechanism is proposed to help the organization drive away the nonqualified applicants and retain the excellent applicants.展开更多

It is necessary to establish a set of indices to evaluate a top executive’s performance and award performance-based stock options to them scientifically and reasonably. This thesis sets indices from the perspective of the top executive’s behaviour and results, which differs from the traditional methods performance evaluation.展开更多

The interview and questionnaire method were used in this research. Randomly distributed questionnaire technique was applied to select samples of 74 various construction practitioners consisting of owners, consultants and main contractors to evaluat the severity of the 35 identified delay factors. The project investigated in this study included residential building and office building projects. The results found that delay in progress payment by owner, adverse weather conditions, main contractor financial problems, evaluation of completed works and act of god factor caused mostly severe delay in building construction project.展开更多

In this article, we outline methods for automatic determination of toothed helical gear trains and the selection criteria for the optimal choice of gear trains. In this work two methods were applied. As first design to use an expert system for the design and then optimize the design that is why we used Kappa PC and Catia for CAD.展开更多

We use a dataset on elections in Africa and a survey financed by the European Commission and conducted by the Ivorian Center of Social and Economic Research (CIRES) in 2005. We find a decline in voter turnout since 1990 for both presidential and parliamentary elections. We also find that the probability of voting varies across ethnic groups and significantly increases with education levels, interest in politics, satisfaction with democracy and satisfaction with government but decreases with insecurity during elections. Moreover, we show that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between age and the probability of voting. This probability is higher for men than women and for workers and retirees compared to unemployed, but it is low for students. Concerning the vote choice, we find that relative to the "program and party" criterion, the probability of choosing the candidate on the basis of his individual characteristics decreases with age, insecurity, satisfaction with democracy while it increases with satisfaction with government and with secondary, university or Koran education level.展开更多

The interview and questionnaire method were used in this research. Randomly distributed questionnaire technique was applied to select samples of 390 various construction practitioners consisting of owners, consultants and main contractors to evaluate the severity of the 43 identified dispute factors. This survey found that contract and specification dispute problem was the highest concern among four main dispute problems for construction practitioners. The insufficient working drawing details factor was ranked as the highest overall severity index. The results of the survey also indicated that both domestic and international funded public projects faced moderately severe dispute level among construction team.展开更多
