The effect of recycled coarse aggregate on concrete compressive strength was investigated based on the concrete skeleton theory. For this purpose, 30 mix proportions of concrete with target cube compressive strength ranging from 20 to 60 MPa were cast with normal coarse aggregate and recycled coarse aggregate from different strength parent concretes. Results of 28-d test show that the strength of different types of recycled aggregate affects the concrete strength obviously. The coarse aggregate added to mortar matrix plays a skeleton role and improves its compressive strength. The skeleton effect of coarse aggregate increases with the increasing strength of coarse aggregate, and normal coarse aggregate plays the highest, whereas the lowest concrete strength occurs when using the weak recycled coarse aggregate. There is a linear relationship between the concrete strength and the corresponding mortar matrix strength. Coarse aggregate skeleton formula is established, and values from experimental tests match the derived expressions. 展开更多

In order to study the application of gyratory compaction molding method in emulsified asphalt cold recycled mixture and optimize the relevant technical parameters, the study was carried out according to splitting strength, stability and water stability test;the design of the experiment involved changing gyration number, emulsified asphalt and water content, molded specimen temperature and other factors to analyze the volume parameters, mechanical properties and water stability. The results show that both the maximum dry density and dry and wet splitting strength ratio(DWSSR) of emulsified asphalt cold reclaimed mixture are improved by the rotary compacting method, while the porosity and the optimal dosage of water are reduced. Furthermore, with the increase of compaction times, the porosity and splitting strength index both change exponentially. DWSSR and porosity are consistent with quadratic functions. The use of gyratory compaction for 70 times at 25 °C and the optimum dosage of emulsified asphalt can be determined based on the splitting strength ratio. The high-temperature stability and water damage resistance of the pavement can be improved by the use of rotary compacting method effectively, and the early strength and road performance are higher than the regulatory requirements. 展开更多

The main objective of this work is to propose new mixture response parameters and to compare correlations with rut depths and sensitivity of permanent deformation response parameters based on field extracted cores and lab-mixed duplicates. A new "mix-confined" test is developed and four new parameters for this test are proposed. Correlation coefficients with rut depths and coefficients of variation (sensitivity) are compared between the four new and two existing parameters. Some parameters are recommended to be used for the newly developed test. The results show that, newly developed test can capture the changes of permanent deformation of asphalt mixtures. Only one new parameter (D1 of Stephen Price model) and one existing parameter (flow number, Fn ) have strong correlations with rut depths of asphalt pavements (R2 greater than 0.7) and have relative small sensitivity (coefficient of variation, COV, less than 30%). For polymer modified asphalt mixtures, the parameter D1 rather than Fn should be used. These findings can be used to check the permanent deformation of asphalt mixture during the mix design. 展开更多

Circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) ash can be potentially used as supplementary cementitious materials for concrete production due to its desirable pozzolanic activity. The adsorption properties of CFBC ash-cement pastes were studied, and ordinary pulverized coal combustion (PCC) fly ash-cement pastes were used as control. The water-adsorption and superplasticizer (SP)-adsorption properties of the pastes were evaluated by water demand and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy respectively. The results show that CFBC ash-cement system has greater compressive strength as compared with PCC fly ash-cement system at a given curing age, although the water demand of the former is significantly higher than that of the latter. CFBC ash-cement pastes possess higher adsorption ability of aliphatic SP than PCC fly ash-cement pastes and the adsorption amount increases with an increase in ash replacement ratio. CFBC ash- cement pastes exhibit lower workability with higher slump loss. It is concluded that CFBC ash can be potentially used as supplementary cementitious material in concrete production, but the mix design of CFBC ash concrete needs to be appropriately adjusted. It is suggested that CFBC ash is used for the production of the concrete needing low flowability. 展开更多

Concretes on the basis of the alumosilicate polymer can be prepared by alkali activation (NaOH, sodium water glass) of waste brown coal fly ash. The preparation is possible: (1) by using a short-term heating of the concrete mix (to 80 ℃); or (2) by allowing the mix to harden spontaneously at a temperature of 20 ℃. The concretes prepared by short-time heating attain high strength values after their preparation; the values are comparable to those characterizing concretes obtained on the basis of Portland cement. The strength development of concretes hardening at 20 ℃ is substantially less steep but, nevertheless, the strength attained after about 60 days is practically identical with that of the concretes exposed to a short-time heating. The shrinkage of concretes prepared by short-time heating is very small as compared with the concretes allowed to harden spontaneously; the shrinkage of latter concretes is larger than that of the concretes on the basis of Portland cement. The concretes on the basis of alumosilicate polymer exhibit much better resistance to the corrosive action of the environment as compared with those prepared on the basis of Portland cement. 展开更多

In this paper, the effect of the source of recycled coarse aggregate on the properties of concrete is investigated. The tests were conducted on concrete made from three sources of recycled aggregates: (1) old concrete with unknown strength, (2) old concrete with a known compressive strength of 21 MPa, and (3) old concrete with a known strength of 42 MPa. The three sources of recycled aggregates were used to produce new concrete with a target compressive strength of 21 MPa. The first and third sources of recycled aggregates were used in producing concrete with target strength of 42 MPa. A control mix was designed with aggregates from natural sources. The research included two methods of making recycled concrete. One concrete mix was produced using the recycled aggregate and adding more water than the control mix, to reach the target slump, while the second concrete mix was produced using the same amount of water as the control mix but with additional superplasticizer to maintain the target slump. The results obtained in this research showed that the concrete compressive strength depends on the source of recycled aggregates; the stronger the source of recycled aggregate, the higher the compressive strength of the produced concrete. Furthermore, the compressive strength of the first concrete mix was about 10%-20% lower than the compressive strength of the control mix. However, when superplasticizers were used, the compressive strength was around the same value as the control mix. 展开更多

Behavior of structural elements under blast loading is different from that under usual loading conditions that are considered in conventional structural deigns. Cantilever slabs are more vulnerable than most other elements under blast loads because of their shape. Understanding the blast behavior of cantilever slabs is useful in strengthening them against blast loads. In this paper, blast loading design envelopes for cantilever slabs are proposed using which, the blast behavior of conventional cantilever slabs can be identified. The paper describes the theories behind these envelopes and the way they can be applied to improve conventional designs. These envelopes have been prepared using numerical techniques. The theories used are accepted, verified and validated theories. The paper shows the possibility of converting a conventional cantilever slab design into impulsive regime design with minor adjustments to the structural design. It points out the importance of increasing slab thickness and controlling steel/concrete ratio for strengthening conventional cantilever slab designs and the requirement of reinforcement at top and bottom fibers. 展开更多

Many researchers have investigated the use of recycled tire products in several traditional civil engineering materials. This research is exploring the use of steel cords, a by-product of the tire recycling process, in concrete mixes. Different concrete specimens were fabricated and tested in uniaxial compression and splitting tensile strength. The steel cords were substituted into the concrete mix in volumetric percentages of various ratios. Results show that mechanical properties of concrete made with steel cords are improved compared with concrete mix made with the traditional scrap-tires recycled material. Also, results show that even though the compressive strength is reduced when using steel cords, this reduction is minimal. When 2% of steel cords are used there is 18% increase in ductility. Moreover, splitting tensile tests show that concrete mixtures with any steel cords content have much greater toughness than control mixture. This mechanical property mix indicates an excellent potential application of modified concrete mix in structures that absorb large amount of energy. 展开更多
