AIM:To investigate the effect of alcohol on the metabolic syndrome (MS) and fatty liver in Japanese men and women.METHODS:A cross-sectional study was conducted in a medical health checkup program at a general hospital...AIM:To investigate the effect of alcohol on the metabolic syndrome (MS) and fatty liver in Japanese men and women.METHODS:A cross-sectional study was conducted in a medical health checkup program at a general hospital.This study involved 18 571 Japanese men and women,18-88 years of age,with a mean body mass index of 22.6 kg/m 2.A standardized questionnaire was administered.The total amount of alcohol consumed per week was calculated,and categorized into four grades.Fatty liver was examined by ultrasound modified criteria of the revised National Cholesterol Educa-tion Program Adult Treatment Panel Ⅲ and the new International Diabetes Federation.RESULTS:The prevalence of fatty liver decreased in men and women with light to moderate alcohol consumption,whereas the prevalence of MS was not so changed.The prevalence of fatty liver of any grade in men was lower than that in those with no or minimal alcohol consumption.In women with light to moderate alcohol consumption,prevalence of fatty liver was lower than that in women with no or minimal alcohol consumption.By logistic regression analysis,the odds ratio (OR) for MS in women with light alcohol consumption was decreased to < 1.0,but this change was not clear in men.The OR for fatty liver was clearly < 1.0 in men with any level of alcohol consumption and in women with light to moderate consumption.CONCLUSION:Light to moderate alcohol consumption has a favorable effect for fatty liver,but not for MS in Japanese men and women.展开更多
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials(RCTs) to determine the effectiveness and safety of incretin-based therapies(IBTs) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes(T2DM) wit...We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials(RCTs) to determine the effectiveness and safety of incretin-based therapies(IBTs) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes(T2DM) with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD). Electronic databases such as the Cochrane library, EMbase, Pub Med, and three Chinese databases were searched for RCTs that compared IBTs with other treatments or placebo for T2 DM with NAFLD. Two reviewers independently assessed the risk of bias, extracted, and analyzed the data. A meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.2. Publication bias was evaluated. Seven RCTs involving 532 patients were ultimately included. The results of meta-analysis(random-effects model) revealed that IBTs had a significant reduction in serum ALT(WMD –12.30, 95% CI –17.53~–7.06) and BMI(WMD –2.64, 95% CI –4.35~–0.94). However, there was no significant difference in other outcomes including Hb A1 c, AST, TC, TG and HOMA-RA. IBTs were well tolerated by patients but the evidence was limited. The significant decrease in hepatic biochemical markers following treatment with IBTs, as well as improvements in BMI, suggested that IBTs may be an effective option for T2 DM with NAFLD.展开更多

This study evaluated quantification efficiency of hepatic proton dens...Quantification of hepatic fat and iron content is important for early detection and monitoring of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) patients. This study evaluated quantification efficiency of hepatic proton density fat fraction(PDFF) by MRI using NAFLD rabbits. R2* was also measured to investigate whether it correlates with fat levels in NAFLD. NAFLD rabbit model was successfully established by high fat and cholesterol diet. Rabbits underwent MRI examination for fat and iron analyses,compared with liver histological findings. MR examinations were performed on a 3.0 T MR system using multi-echo 3 D gradient recalled echo(GRE) sequence. MRI-PDFF showed significant differences between different steatosis grades with medians of3.72%(normal), 5.43%(mild), 9.11%(moderate) and 11.17%(severe), whereas this was not observed in R2*. Close correlation between MRI-PDFF and histological steatosis was observed(r=0.78, P=0.000). Hepatic iron deposit was not found in any rabbits. There was no correlation between R2* and either liver MRI-PDFF or histological steatosis. MR measuring MRI-PDFF and R2* simultaneously provides promising quantification of steatosis and iron. Rabbit NAFLD model confirmed accuracy of MRI-PDFF for liver fat quantification. R2* measurement and relationship between fat and iron of NAFLD liver need further experimental investigation.展开更多
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between smoking and drinking and constitution types from Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)theory.METHODS:The Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire(CCMQ)was used.A sam...OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between smoking and drinking and constitution types from Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)theory.METHODS:The Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire(CCMQ)was used.A sample of 8448subjects from nine provinces and municipalities was chosen from the database of the TCM constitution and health status survey.Constituent ratio and correspondence analysis were used to find the relationship between smoking and drinking and TCM constitution.RESULTS:There was an association between smokinganddrinkingandtheGentleness,phlegm-dampness,and dampness-heat type constitutions.People that did not smoke tobacco or drink alcohol tended to have Yang-deficiency,Yin-deficiency,Qi-depression,Qi-deficiency,special diathesis,orblood-stasis type constitutions.CONCLUSION:There was a significant correlation between tobacco and alcohol use and TCM constitutions.To improve patient health,more attention should be paid to tobacco and alcohol control.展开更多
