The present study evaluates the performances of the two GAMIL (grid-point atmospheric model of lAP LASG) versions during TWP-ICE using CAPT. The results indicate that GAMIL2.0 reproduced better shifts of clouds and rainfall during three distinct monsoon phases than GAMIL1.0, although both of them simulated the large-scale dynamical states well, which are mainly attributable to the different convective parameterizations.展开更多

In addition, the second phase of the Nansha terminal in Guangzhou’s port and the first phase of the Da Chang Bay container terminal in Shenzhen opened last year. Under these circumstances, there is an increasing need to quantitatively measure the impact these infrastructure investments have on regional cargo flows. The analysis should include the effects of container terminal construction, berth deepening, and access road construction. The authors have been developing a model for international cargo simulation (MICS) which can simulate the movement of cargo. The volume of origin-destination (OD) container cargo in the East Asian region was used as an input, in order to evaluate the effects of international freight transportation policies. This paper focuses on the PRD area and, by incorporating a more detailed network, evaluates the impact of several infrastructure investment projects on freight movement.展开更多

Traditional risk management attempts to manage, control, and direct a project through various phases, from planning and design, through procurement, and to construction. However, the risk management in Botswana seems to be either not implemented or not successful. The project performance in Botswana has a poor performance record. The researchers are attempting to identify why the traditional project/risk management is not working. In analyzing the problem in Botswana, the researchers discovered that the traditional risk management model was theoretically unsound, and designed a new project and risk model, with an entirely different approach to risk. The new model is an outgrowth of the highly successful Performance Information Procurement System (PIPS) and the Information Measurement Theory (IMT)/Kashiwagi Solution Model (KSM) concepts. The approach has been presented to some Botswana clients and academics and has received a favorable response. The development of the new risk model will lead to a huge change in the paradigm for delivering projects in Botswana. The theoretical development of the new risk model is ongoing at the University of Botswana as a part of a doctoral dissertation.展开更多

The evolution of the digital technology has helped in this direction. Thus, the TSs can support all requirements for the stake out and monitoring of modern survey engineering and constructions projects. Their complicated manufacturing process and the sensitivity of their components require gauging, adjusting and calibration at certain time intervals. This appears to be the only way in order to assure the precision of measurements provided by the manufacturer and the reliability of the works they are used for. The goal of this paper is to propose a method for the estimation of the gauging time interval for modern YSs. which could be used by any user. More specifically, the indispensable need for the TSs gauging is elevated and documented. All the parameters that influence their operation are registered. A model expressed by a scale of grades is defined, leading thus to an equation for the calculation of the time interval for the next needed gauging and calibration.展开更多

From 2010 to 2012, the landfill was aerated intermittently with low pressure. Outgoing air was treated passively in an open biofilter which covers the landfill surface. The landfill was aerated by means of 80 air injection wells arranged area-wide in a 10 m grid. An elaborate measuring process and technological controls are being utilized in the pilot scheme. The data collected offer interesting insights about the processes during aeration, allowing optimization of the aeration strategy depending on changes of the conditions in the landfill. During the three-year aeration phase, conditions have changed inside the landfill section in various ways. In numerous zones of the landfill body, the aeration caused aerobic conditions with a decline of methane production. Accelerated settlings are measured up to 11%. The effects of the aerobic stabilization on the landfill are evaluated in a two-year monitoring phase started in 2013.展开更多

The study of the water temperature tidal effect has important significance, for water temperature tidal effect is both a reflection of stress-strain in crust and an interference factor of precursor observations. With a view of thermal conditions in artesian wells, the paper holds that there are two mechanisms for interpreting tidally induced water temperature changes in artesian wells. Namely, thermal conduction mechanisms and thermal convection mechanism. The paper then derives the quantitative relationship between water temperature and tidal volumetric strain changes in an ideal artesian well. Finally, the water temperature tidal effect in the Benxi artesian well is analyzed. The results show that the water temperature tidal effect in Benxi well is the result of joint action of thermal conduction mechanism and thermal convection mechanism,in which thermal conduction mechanism plays a leading role.展开更多

However, when things go wrong such as when the project is abandoned for various reasons, they may create two different scenarios: a contract that is breached and a fixed structure that is left on the land which may constitute an incomplete benefit that is acquired by one of the parties. The transfer of such benefit is initially made with a legal ground, but that ground has since ceased to exist. If some aspect of that benefit cannot be recovered under a contract, enrichment rules may be competent to solve the problem. How to measure the different aspects of that enrichment is however a problem that may have different interpretations according to different conceptions of the foundations of enrichment liability in a particular legal system. This article explores the measures of enrichment in such cases of failed bilateral contracts scenarios working from South African perspective. It argues that in cases of failed bilateral contracts generating an enrichment situation, sanctioning a dual measure of enrichment in a legal system may be an appropriate avenue.展开更多

Although the use of geospatial knowledge and ancillary data in improving land-cover classification has been studied since the early 1980 s, mature methods and efficient supporting tools are still lacking. This paper presents a geospatial knowledge-based verification and improvement approach for global land cover(GLC) mapping at 30-m resolution. A set of verification rules is derived from three types of land cover and its change knowledge(natural, cultural and temporal constraints). A group of web-based supporting tools is developed to facilitate the integration of and access to large amounts of ancillary data and to support online data manipulation and analysis as well as collaborative verification workflows. With this approach, two 30-m GLC datasets(Globe Land-2000 and Globe Land-2010) were verified and modified. The results indicate that the data quality of Globe Land30 has been largely improved.展开更多
