The friction and wear properties of Mg2B2O5 whisker reinforced 6061Al matrix composite fabricated via power ultrasonic-stir casting process were investigated using a ball-on-disk wear-testing machine against a GCr45 steel counterface under dry sliding conditions. The reinforcements include as-received Mg2B2O5 whiskers and Mg2B2O5 whiskers coated with CuO and ZnO. The volume fraction of the composites is 2%. The relationship between the wear rate and the coefficient of friction was discussed. The results indicate that the wear rate of the Mg2B2O5 whiskers coated with ZnO reinforced aluminum matrix composites is the lowest among the materials. As the applied load and sliding speed steadily increase the coefficients of friction and wear rates of the as-received matrix alloy and the fabricated composites decrease. As the applied load and sliding speed increase, the wear mechanisms of the composites shift from a mild to a severe regime. 展开更多

The NiCoCrAlY coatings strengthened by three nano-particles with the same addition were prepared on a Ni-base super alloy using laser cladding technique. The dry frictional wear behaviors of the coatings at 500 ℃ in static air were investigated. The comparison was made with the coating without nano-particles. The results show that the wear mechanism of the NiCoCrAlY coatings with nano-particles, like the coating without nano-particles, is the delamination wear due to the strong plastic deformation and oxidative wear. However, the frictional coefficient of the coatings increases and presents the decrease trend with the increase of sliding distance after adding nano-particles. Moreover, the wear rate of the coatings with nano-particles is only 34.0%-64.5% of the coating without nano-particles. Among the three nano-particles, the improvement of nano-SiC on the high temperature wear resistance of the coating is the most significant. 展开更多

Two types of aluminium-based composites reinforced respectively with 20 vol short fibre alumina and with a hybrid of 15 vol SiC particle and 5 vol short alumina fibre are machined with different tool materials:cemented carbide, ceramic, cubic boron nitride(CBN)and polycrystalline diamond(PCD).The analysis on tool wear shows that the various tool materials exhibite different tool wear behaviours, and the tool wear mechanisma are discussed.Apparently,PCD tools do not necessarily guarantee dimensional stability but they can provide the most economic means for machining all sorts of composites.Consequently,a suitable tool material is suggested for machining each metal matrix composite(MMC) from the standpoints of tool wear and machined surface finish. 展开更多

The in-situ Al-based composites with different SiO2/C/Al molar ratios were fabricated by reaction hot pressing. The dry sliding wear characteristics of the composites were investigated using a pin-on-disc wear tester. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used to investigate the surface composition and its morphology. The results show that when the SiO2/C/Al molar ratio is 3:6:9, more in-situ synthesized Al2O3 and SiC along with Si particles are produced, and Al4C3 is prevented completely from the Al?SiO2?C system. Thereby, a significant improvement of wear resistance is obtained. When the sliding velocity increases from 0.4 to 1.6 m/s, the wear loss decreases gradually. With increasing the normal load, the wear loss increases as well. Ploughing, craters and micro-grooving are observed as dominant abrasive wear mechanisms. Whereas, when a high velocity is employed, only the oxidation mechanism controls the wear behavior of the composites. 展开更多

The B4C/Mg composites fabricated by metal-assisted pressureless infiltration technique were used as experimental material, and the wear behavior and mechanism of this material were studied. A pin-on-disc apparatus was used to evaluate the wear behavior where loads of 20, 40, 60 and 80 N, and a sliding velocity of 250 r/min were exerted. The results show that B4C/Mg composites possess superior wear resistance than pure Mg under various applied loads, and the content of Ti, as infiltration inducer, has an influence on the wear resistance of B4C/Mg composites. The dominant wear mechanism for pure Mg is abrasion, while that for B4C/Mg composites under low loads is adhesion and delamination. Under high loads, the wear mechanism of B4C/Mg composites can be attributed to thermal softening and melting or plastic deformation. 展开更多

Non-contact measurements of machining temperatures were performed with optical pyrometer when drilling particle(B4C) reinforced metal matrix composites(MMCs) with different drills. The effect of particle content, cutting speed, feed rate and tool material on the maximum drilling temperature was investigated. The drilling parameters were optimized based on multiple performance characteristics in terms of the maximum cutting temperature and tool wear. According to the results, the most influential control factors on the cutting temperatures are found to be particle fraction, feed rate and interaction between the cutting speed and particle content, respectively. The influences of the cutting speed and drill material on the drilling temperature are found to be relatively lower for the used range of parameters. Minimum cutting temperatures are obtained with lower particle fraction and cutting speed, with relatively higher feed rates and carbide tools. The results reveal that optimal combination of the drilling parameters can be used to obtain both minimum cutting temperature and tool wear. 展开更多
