The influence of Ti-Si-Mg-AI wire on microstructure and mechanical properties of SiCp/A1 metal matrix composite joints produced by plasma arc in-situ weld-alloying was investigated. Argon-nitrogen mixture was used as plasma gas and Ti-Si-Mg-A1 flux-cored wires as filled composites. Weldments were submitted to tensile test. Meanwhile, the macro morphology and microstructure of the joints were examined. The result shows that the formation ofneedie-like harmful phase A14C3 is effectively inhibited and the wettability of molten pool is improved by adding Ti-Si-Mg-A1 flux-cored wires. With 15Ti-5Si-5Mg-A1 flux-cored wire as filled composite, the maximum tensile strength of the welded joint is 267 MPa, which is up to 83% that of the matrix composites under annealed condition. 展开更多

The carbon nanotubes(CNTs) reinforced Al-Cu matrix composites were prepared by hot pressing sintering and hot rolling, and the effects of Cu content on the interfacial reaction between Al and CNTs, the precipitation behavior of Cu-containing precipitates, and the resultant mechanical properties of the composites were systematically investigated. The results showed that the increase of Cu content can not only increase the number and size of Cu-containing precipitate generated during the composite fabrication processes, but also promote the interfacial reaction between CNTs and Al matrix, leading to the intensified conversion of CNTs into Al_(4)C_(3). As a result, the composite containing 1 wt.% Cu possesses the highest strength, elastic modulus and hardness among all composites, due to the maintenance of the original structure of CNTs. Moreover, the increase of Cu content can change the dominant strengthening mechanisms for the enhanced strength of the fabricated composites. 展开更多

The microstructure formation and strengthening of an Al-5 wt.%TiO2 composites with additions of 5 wt.%Cu and 2 wt.% stearic acid(as a process control agent, PCA) during mechanical alloying and subsequent thermal exposure were studied. The powder composites were prepared by high-energy ball milling for up to 10 h. Single line tracks of the powders were laser melted. Optical and scanning electron microscopy, XRD analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to study microstructural evolution. The results showed that the Cu addition promotes an effective mechanical alloying of aluminum with Ti O2 from the start of milling, resulting in higher microhardness(up to HV 290), while the PCA, on the contrary, postpones this process. In both cases, the composite granules with uniform distribution of Ti O2 particles were formed. Subsequent heating of mechanically alloyed materials causes the activation of an exothermic reaction of Ti O2 reduction with aluminum, the start temperature of which, in the case of Cu addition, shifts to lower values, that is, the transformation begins in the solid state. Besides, the Cu-added material after laser melting demonstrates a more dispersed and uniform structure which positively affects its microhardness. 展开更多

Two micron SiC particles with angular and spherical shape and the sub-micron Al2O3 particles with spherical shape were introduced to reinforce 6061 aluminium by squeeze casting technology. Microstructures and effect of thermal-cooling cycle treatment (TCCT) on the thermal expansion behaviors of three composites were investigated. The results show that the composites are free of porosity and SiC/Al2O3 particles are distributed uniformly. Inflections at about 300℃ are observed in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) versus temperature curves of two SiCp/Al composites, and this characteristic is not affected by TCCT. The TCCT has significant effect on thermal expansion behavior of SiCp/Al composites and CTE of them after 3 cycles is lower than that of 1 or 5 cycles. However, no inflection is observed in Al2O3p/Al composite, while TCCT has effect on CTE of Al2O3p/Al composite. These results should be due to different relaxation behavior of internal stress in three composites. 展开更多
