Argon-nitrogen mixture was used as plasma gas and Ti-Si-Mg-A1 flux-cored wires as filled composites. Weldments were submitted to tensile test. Meanwhile, the macro morphology and microstructure of the joints were examined. The result shows that the formation ofneedie-like harmful phase A14C3 is effectively inhibited and the wettability of molten pool is improved by adding Ti-Si-Mg-A1 flux-cored wires. With 15Ti-5Si-5Mg-A1 flux-cored wire as filled composite, the maximum tensile strength of the welded joint is 267 MPa, which is up to 83% that of the matrix composites under annealed condition.展开更多

Sound weld was obtained at a rotational speed of 1050 r/min and a welding speed of 30 mm/min. Intercalation structure formed at the crown and Cu/weld nugget (WN) area promotes interracial diffusion and metallurgical bonding of aluminum and copper. However, corrosion morphology reveals the weak bonding mechanism of internal interface, which causes the joint failing across the interface with a brittle-ductile mixed fracture mode. The tensile strength of the joint is 148 MPa, which is higher than that of the aluminum matrix. Crystal defects and grain refinement by severely plastic deformation during friction stir welding facilitate short circuit diffusion and thus accelerate the formation of A14Cu9 and A12Cu intermetallic compounds (IMCs). XRD results show that A14Cu9 is mainly in Cu/WN transition zone. The high dislocation density and formation of dislocation loops are the major reasons of hardness increase in the WN.展开更多

The composite was produced using conventional stir casting method and coatings were laid using an indigenously-developed friction surfacing machine. The rotational speed of the mechtrode was varied. The microstructure of the composite coating was observed using conventional and advanced microscopic techniques. The sliding wear behavior was evaluated using a pin-on-disc apparatus. The coating geometry(thickness and width) increased with increased rotational speed. The interface was straight without thick intermetallic layer. Homogenous distribution of nano B4C particles and extremely fine grains was observed in the composite coating. The interfacial bonding between the aluminum matrix and B4C particles was excellent. The composite coating improved the wear resistance of the titanium alloy substrate due to the reduction in effective contact area, lower coefficient of friction and excellent interfacial bonding.展开更多

It is a solid-state process which prevents the formation of the intermetallic precipitates responsible for degradation of mechanical properties in fusion welds of these composites. The major concern in friction stir welding is the wear of the welding tool pin. The wear is due to the prolonged contact between the tool and the harder reinforcements in the composite materials. This paper provides an overview of the effects of different parameters of friction stir welding on the tool wear. It was found that the total amount of material removed from the tool is in directproportion to the rotational speed of the tool and the length of the weld but inversely proportional to the transverse rate. The result seven demonstrate that the tool geometry also has significant influence on the wear resistance of the tool. The tool even converts itself into a self-optimized shape to minimize its wear.展开更多

It was fabricated by friction surfacing as an additive manufacturing process. To carry out this investigation, Ag was added by 5.3, 10.6, and 16.0 wt.% to an AA2024 consumable rod by inserting holes in it. It was found that due to the strengthening by solid solution and the formation of precipitates and intermetallic containing Ag, the driving force for grain growth is reduced and consequently the grain size of the coating is decreased. After artificial aging heat treatment, the electrical conductivities of the coatings containing 0 and 16.0 wt.% Ag are increased by 4.15%(IACS) and decreased by 2.15%(IACS), respectively. While considering a linear relationship, it can be proposed that for a 1 wt.% Ag increase, the strength and hardness of the coating will be increased by 1.8% and 1.0%, respectively. It was established that the effect of Al6(Cu,Ag)Mg4 precipitate formation on strengthening is greater than that of Ag-rich intermetallic.展开更多

The nickel-aluminide reinforcement was fabricated by in-situ methods based on adding nickel powders to Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy melt during the semi-solid casting process. The findings showed that an increase in the rotational speed from 600 to 1000 r/min raised the coating efficiency from 65% to 76%. Besides, there was no significant difference between coating efficiencies in the coating with and without nickel-aluminide. The outcomes showed that if the coating was applied at a rotational speed of 1000 r/min, a traverse speed of 100 mm/min, and an axial feeding rate of 125 mm/min, the hardness and shear strength of the substrate increased by up to 225% and 195%, respectively. But the wear rate of the substrate dropped by 75%. Although the hardness of the coating containing nickel-aluminide increases by up to 32% compared to the coating without nickel-aluminide, nickel-aluminide does not affect the thermal stability of the coating.展开更多

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) with 37% (volume fraction) aluminum particle were joined by friction welding. The results show that the effects of the rotation speed on the reduction rate of particle size are greater than those of the upset pressure, and the area of the MMC weld zone decreases as the joining efficiency increases, while it is considered that the joining efficiency does not increase as the reduction rate of particle size decreases. During the macro-examination of the bonding interlace, a gray discolored region was observed on the bonding interface, and the center of the region was dark gray. After the micro-examination of the bonding interface, base metal made some second particulate formed by condensed alumina particulate but discoloration part distributed minute alumina particulate without second particulate. Consequently, it was also observed that rotational speed of 3 000 r/min and upset pressure of 63.6 MPa showed a very good.joint.展开更多
