Since it is impossible to obtain the specific credit data among banks, this paper estimates the inter-bank lending matrix based on the partial information of banks. Thus, directed network models of the Chinese inter-bank market are constructed by using the threshold method. The network efficiency measures and the effects of random attacks and selective attacks on the global efficiency of the inter-bank network are analyzed based on the network models of the inter-bank market. Empirical results suggest that the efficiency measures are sensitive to the threshold, and that the global efficiency is little affected by random attacks, while it is highly sensitive to selective attacks. Properties such as inter-bank market network efficiency would be useful for risk management and stability of the inter-bank market.展开更多

The theory of industrial organization (IO) was applied as a guideline to measure the degree of monopoly power in microfinance structure. The objective-of the study was investigation on Thai microfinance institution marketing structure by using Concentration Ratio (CR) and Herfindahl Hirschman Index (HHI). The data of the study focus on the outstanding loans market share of microfinance institutions (MFIs). The market share of the outstanding loans of MFIs from the largest to the smallest is as follows: Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC), Village Fund Cooperatives, Government Saving Bank (GSB), Pawnshop, Self Help group: Saving Group, Commercial Bank, Self Help Group: Sudja Group and Isalamic Bank (IB), respectively. It stated that CR by outstanding loans is as follows: Cr 1, 59.35%; Cr 3, 81.11%; Cr 6, 92.14%; and Cr 9, 94.37%. At the same time HHI is 0.38. Additionally, BAAC remains the majority MFIs even though there are the other MFIs available in the microfinance system. Initially, it analyzes benchmark equilibrium solutions of monopoly and duopoly to establish the degree of quality differentiation between two private banks in an uncover market configuration. Further, it estimates the quality differentiation between private and public banks, and examines the interaction between two market structures keeping public bank as both leader and follower, and then measures the social welfare from different prospectives. The explicit operation of two stages Nash equilibrium game forecasted that public banks' monopoly seems to be still better than a private banking, and it is socially optimal. The outcome demonstrates a significant importance of vertical quality differentiation for policy implication in banking industry and provides an insight on the reasons of particular co-existence of public and private banking services in the specified location. In this context, it is concluded that the presence of public banks in banking industries is a crucial condition for obtaining the higher range of social welfare.展开更多

Investment certificate is a type of structured products, the value of which is derived from the value of an underlying asset. The underlying asset is usually a share in a company, a basket of shares, or an entire index, etc.. It can be stated that for every estimated development of an asset (growth, fall, and stagnation) or for every attitude to risks (conservative or aggressive investors), there is a suitable kind of certificate. The main objective is to perform an analysis of the structured product--Austria/Germany Bond 3 and its guarantee certificate construction using digital-barrier options. The authors have found an alternative opportunity to the purchase of this certificate, i.e., investment in a bank deposit, together with a purchase of cash or nothing down and four-knock-out call options and a sale of cash or nothing down and four-knock-out put options. The authors prove that the alternative investment has the same profit profile as the certificate. The authors made this analysis with the objective to contribute to the intellectualization of investors.展开更多

In terms of an intrinsic mechanism, an appropriate measure of leverage ratio should be the liability/asset ratio. In their business operations, it is inevitable for real-economy enterprises to incur liabilities arising from business and financial transactions. Therefore, the significance of deleveraging operations is to reduce the leverage ratio below a certain threshold to effectively prevent risks arising from an excessive leverage ratio, rather than to reduce the liability ratio of real-economy enterprises to zero. For real-economy enterprises, a key question is how to adjust their debt structure by reducing current liabilities and increasing mid-and long-term liabilities. The debt structure of real-economy enterprises is primarily determined by their financial structure. Hence, it is essential to adjust the financial structure in order to improve the debt structure of real-economy enterprises and increase the share of direct finance. Various risks exist in the combination of shares and bonds within the banking system, investment-lending linkage and market-based debt-to-equity operations, which are options in reducing the leverage ratio for real-economy enterprises. From the standpoint of giving play to capital market functions, it is advisable to increase the issuance of midand long-term corporate bonds and preferred stock, restrict non-financial listed companies from engaging in financial operations and the shareholders of listed companies from selling shares, encourage equity investment institutions to enhance equity investment in realeconomy enterprises, and further develop the financing function of the stock market.展开更多

While Turkey has only four "Islamic" banks, they capture more than 4% market share. The purpose of this research is to analyze the mechanisms that have allowed such a growth between 2002 (just after the financial crisis in 2001) and 2009, by comparing the results of activities of these four Islamic banks and find out possible opportunities that might exist in this sector. The results indicate that these institutions have a respectively higher risk-taking and internationally more fair open policy than the banks known as "conventional". While Bank Asya (the market leader of the participatory banks in Turkey) and Albaraka Turk capture the individual customers, the other two institutions that are TurkiyeFinans and Kuveyt Turk capture the commercial customers. In addition, the development of these institutions seems to be very difficult because of the lack of Turkish Sukuk in Turkish banking context having no adequate liquidity. Moreover, in its political context, leading actors in Turkish political and economic structure reject utterly the existence of Sharia Board. In fact, it is clear that the Turkish banking sector is an untapped potential market that could be easily converted into an opportunity by improving the regulatory framework and communication strategy for these institutions. Indeed, since the controversy still exists around the concept of secularism, which is an impediment to the development of these banks called "Islamic" in Turkey, there is a necessity for a communication strategy to break down prejudices and to become popular for Islamic finance sector, which is still known very poorly and superficially by general public in Turkey.展开更多

This has also left the government in a frantic condition to rebuild the financial markets from the bottom up. What started out with excessive bank lending on mortgages lead to the mortgage crisis and a ripple effect on the economy. The cancer has spread globally, affecting every major marketplace and all the major states in the U.S.. Our economy is still very fragile because of this crisis, but eventually we will recover in a few years time to achieve robust economic growth. Long standing cultural pressures in the United States maintained that home ownership was necessary to be a part of the American Dream, and this cultural stance was reinforced by Clinton in 1994, when he enacted a program to raise home ownership to more than two-thirds of all adults. With the tacit blessing of the Federal Government, many mortgage companies sprung up, that catered to those in lower income brackets, offering them the mortgages that many did not have the financial sophistication to understand and deliver. Coupled with the skyrocketing costs of property taxes, insurance, and maintenance costs, many homeowners found themselves unable to pay their mortgages. The whole industry tanked, causing displacement of people and increased unemployment. The lenders of these mortgages sold the notes to investment bankers, and they were sold as high-quality investment grade securities. The major rating agencies were complacent in this tactic, causing rapid default rates on these mortgages; many commercial and investment banks got caught in this crisis. The prices of homes continue to decline, and many homeowners find themselves under water on their mortgages. It was found that in 2010, the U.S. government was responsible for nine out of every ten mortgages issued, which caused further problems with Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac. The crisis is still continuing, with no end in sight. The analysis was based on the data analysis and readings from the journal, as well as various Wall Street commentaries.展开更多

The research methodologies use the traditional cumulative abnormal returns and the unexpected earning as the main dependent and independent variables. The evidences show that: (1) There is a strong returns-to-earnings relation for banks; (2) The liquidity risk has information content beyond earnings changes in the returns-to-earnings relation. This probably due to the reason that managers of banks find the level of liquidity that fulfilled the need of investors and at the same time earns good profits for the banks.展开更多

The re-engineering of business processes is concerned with fundamentally rethinking and redesigning business processes to obtain dramatic and sustaining improvements in quality, cost, service, lead-times, outcomes, flexibility and innovation (Hammer & Champy, 1993). Nowadays, banking industry has reduced structural barriers to competition in domestic markets by abolishing interest rates ceilings on deposits and lending by financial intermediaries in the world. Iran also has not been expected. According to the government's decision, the interest rate is going down to be around 9% (before: 22%, and right now: 15%), and this decision is very risky for the banks in Iran. On these reasons cited above, the banks should employ some strategies to solve their problems. It is because the customers have a vital and key role in this sector, and the banks are dependent to them, 13PR is one strategy to help them in this competitive situation. BPR implementation can provide them, to survive in this better customer service, as well as improvement and management of customer expectations satisfaction and loyalty (Winer, 2001). This study is a descriptive-correlation research to explain effect of BPR on strengthening of banking sector, focus on customer satisfaction as potential of I^PR. The focus of attention with such applications is customer satisfaction. In this research, a questionnaire was developed containing 18 items each items employed a 7-piont instrument developed to find existent relationship between BPR implementation and customer satisfaction, relationship between employee's productivity and efficiency and satisfaction level of customer and also effect of information technology on accomplishment of BPR. In order to validate the instrument, validity and reliability tests were performed and to get reliability. Alpha kronbakh has computed according a pilot study as shown in following items: r HI (with 5 factors) = 75.7%; r H2 (with 7 factors) = 75%; r H3 (with 5 factors) = 81%; R total: (with 17 factors) = 92%展开更多
