This paper proposes a new battery management system (BMS) based on a master-slave control mode for multi-cell li-ion battery packs. The proposed BMS can be applied in li-ion battery packs with any cell number. The whole system is composed of a master processor and a string of slave manager cells (SMCs). Each battery cell corresponds to an SMC. Unlike the conventional BMS, the proposed one has a novel method for communication, and it collects the battery status information in a direct and simple way. An SMC communicates with its adjacent counterparts to transfer the battery information as well as the commands from the master processor. The nethermost SMC communicates with the master processor directly. This method allows the battery management chips to be implemented in a standard CMOS ( complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor transistor) process. A testing chip is fabricated in the CSMC 0.5 μm 5 V N-well CMOS process. The testing results verify that the proposed method for data communication and the battery management system can protect and manage multi-cell li-ion battery packs. 展开更多

Implementing effective cost management approaches has recently gained momentum due to intense competition and increasing customer demands. Moreover, effective cost management approaches have contributed to firms' competitive advantage in relation to cost leadership strategy. Consequently, firms have implemented contemporary cost management systems, such as activity-based management, business process re-engineering, life-cycle costing, target costing, and theory of constraint (TOC), to enable them to become low-cost producers and compete effectively and sustain their performance. Furthermore, focusing on cost management to improve profitability has led to the integration of activity-based costing (ABC) and TOC. Therefore, the aim of this study is to review literature and discuss how integration of ABC and TOC can result in improved and sustained cost management. While these methods have different approaches in addressing cost management, treating them as complementary cost management approaches can result in improved cost management due to improved product costing, improved cost reporting, improved product-mix decisions, and improved cycle-time management. Improvement in cost management will then result in sustained cost management. Sustained cost management is further enhanced with the investment in information customer and shareholder value technology that supports cross-functional decision making to continue creating to remain competitive in the market. 展开更多

In order to help the organizations in this endeavor, this paper presents a model for planning and implementation of IMS (integrated management system) for quality and food safety, using the example of biscuit products manufacturing, and explains its conception. The integrative approach is based on the synergetic effect between the mutually related business processes. It has been established that the introduction of the model can help the biscuit producers in efficiently addressing such challenges as limited resources, increasing competition, as well as higher expectations of customers and other stakeholders. 展开更多

The S-band MBKs of IECAS have peak power of 120-250 kW, average power of 4-9 kW, efficiency of 35-45%, gain of 41-46 dB, beam voltage of 15-19 kV, and weight of 40-45 kg. Some key technical problems of MBK are also described and discussed. Among them,improving the design of MBK to obtain the required bandwidth, raising beam transmission to increase average power, eliminating oscillation and spray spectrum, overcoming window breakdown caused by magic mode, reducing breakdown times of electrongun, are most important things for the practical MBK. To save cost, more and more users choose provision resources at the granularity of virtual machines in cluster systems, especially data centres. Maintaining a consistent member view is the foundation of reliable cluster managements, and it also raises several challenge issues for large scale cluster systems deployed with virtual machines (which we call virtualized clusters). In this paper, we introduce our experience in design and implementation of scalable member view management on large-scale virtual clusters. Our research contributions include three-aspects : 1 ) we propose a scalable and reliable management infrastructure that combines a peer-to-peer structure and a hierarchy structure to maintain a consistent member view in virtual clusters; 2 ) we present a light-weighted group membership algorithm that can reach the consistent member view within a single round of message exchange; 3 ) we design and implement a scalable membership service that can provide virtual machines and maintain a consistent member view in virtual clusters. Our work is verified on Dawning 5000A, which ranked No. 10 of Top 500 super computers in November, 2008. 展开更多

The research goal is to develop a new solar water heater system(SWHS) that uses a solar bubble pump instead of an electric pump.The pump is powered by the steam produced from an evacuated tube collector.Therefore,heat could be transferred downward from the collector to a hot water storage tank.The designed system consists of two sets of heat-pipe evacuated tube collectors,a solar bubble pump installed at an upper level and a water storage tank with a heat exchanger at a lower level.Discharge heads of 1 and 5 m were tested.The bubble pump could operate at the collector temperature of about 90-100 ℃ and vapor gage pressure of 80-90 kPa.It is found that water circulation within the SWHS depends on the incident solar intensity and system discharge head.Experimental investigations are conducted to obtain the system thermal efficiencies from the hourly,daily and long-term performance tests.The thermal performance of the proposed system is compared with conventional solar water heaters.The results show that the proposed system achieves system characteristic efficiency of 10% higher than that of the conventional systems using electric pump if taking the consumption of electric power into account.And the former is a zero carbon system. 展开更多

An integrated management system (IMS) aims to integrate some or all ... Nowadays, there exist various standards for individual management systems (MSs), at least, one for each stakeholder. New ones will be published. An integrated management system (IMS) aims to integrate some or all components of the business into one coherent and efficient MS. Maximizing integration is more and more a strategic priority in that it constitutes an opportunity to eliminate and/or reduce potential factors of destruction of value for the organizations and also to be more competitive and consequently promote its sustainable success. A preliminary investigation was conducted on a Portuguese industrial company which, over the years, has been adopting gradually, in whole or in part, individualized management system standards (MSSs). A research, through a questionnaire, was performed with the objective to develop, in a real business environment, an adequate and efficient IMS-QES (quality, environment, and safety) model and to potentiate for the future a generic IMS model to integrate other MSSs. The strategy and research methods have taken into consideration the case study. It was obtained a set of relevant conclusions resulting from the statistical analyses of the responses to the survey. Globally, the investigation results, by themselves, justified and prioritized the conception of a model of development of the IMS-QES and consequent definition and validation of a structure of an IMS-QES model, to be implemented at the small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) where the investigation was conducted. 展开更多

Traffic matrix is an abstract representation of the traffic volume flowing between sets of source and destination pairs.It is a key input parameter of network operations management,planning,provisioning and traffic engineering.Traffic matrix is also important in the context of OpenFlow-based networks.Because even good measurement systems can suffer from errors and data collection systems can fail,missing values are common.Existing matrix completion methods do not consider traffic exhibit characteristics and only provide a finite precision.To address this problem,this paper proposes a novel approach based on compressive sensing and traffic self-similarity to reconstruct the missing traffic flow data.Firstly,we analyze the realworld traffic matrix,which all exhibit lowrank structure,temporal smoothness feature and spatial self-similarity.Then,we propose Self-Similarity and Temporal Compressive Sensing(SSTCS) algorithm to reconstruct the missing traffic data.The extensive experiments with the real-world traffic matrix show that our proposed SSTCS can significantly reduce data reconstruction errors and achieve satisfactory accuracy comparing with the existing solutions.Typically SSTCS can successfully reconstruct the traffic matrix with less than 32%errors when as much as98%of the data is missing. 展开更多

Road condition is an important variable to measure in order to decrease road and vehicle operating/maintenance costs, but also to increase ride comfort and traffic safety. By using the built-in vibration sensor in smart phones, it is possible to collect road roughness data which can be an indicator of road condition up to a level of Class 2 or 3 in a simple and cost efficient way. Since data collection therefore is possible to be done more frequently, one can better monitor roughness changes over time. The continuous data collection can also give early warnings of changes and damage, enable new ways to work in the operational road maintenance management, and can serve as a guide for more accurate surveys for strategic asset management and pavement planning. Collected measurement data are wirelessly transferred by the operator when needed via a web service to an internet mapping server with spatial filtering functions. The measured data can be aggregated in preferred sections, as well as exported to other GlS (geographical information systems) or road management systems. Our conclusion is that measuring roads with smart phones can provide an efficient, scalable, and cost-effective way for road organizations to deliver road condition data. 展开更多
