Through comparison of turbulence models with hydraulic performance experiment, SST k-co model was confirmed to study the rational determination of sampling frequency and time better. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technology was then adopted to process those fluctuating pressure signals obtained. On these bases, the characteristics of pressure fluctuations acting on the tongue were discussed. It is found that aliasing errors decrease at higher sampling frequency of 17 640 Hz, but not at a lower sampling frequency of 1 764 Hz. Correspondingly, an output frequency range ten-times wider is obtained at 17 640 Hz. Compared with 8R, when the sampling time is shorter, the amplitudes may be overvalued, and the frequencies and amplitudes of low-frequency fluctuations can not be well predicted. The frequencies at the tongue are in good agreement with the values calculated by formula and the frequency compositions less than the blade passing frequency are accurately predicted.展开更多

The calculations were performed by means of solving the 2-D Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations with a k-ε turbulence model. The calculated results, produced flow structure drag and lift coefficients, as well as Strouhal numbers. The findings were in good agreement with previous published data, which also supplied us with a good understanding of the flow across cylinders of different high Reynolds numbers. Meanwhile, an effective measure was presented to control the lift force on a cylinder, which points the way to decrease the vortex induced vibration of marine structure in future.展开更多

The effects of unsteady flow characteristics on solid-liquid two-phase flow and pump performance were researched under design condition. The results show that clocking effect has a significant influence on the flow in pump, and the fluctuation of flow velocity and pressure is obvious, particularly near the volute tongue, at the position of small sections of volute and within diffuser. Clocking effect has a more influence on liquid-phase than on solid-phase, and the wake-jet structure of relative velocity of solid-phase is less obvious than liquid-phase near the volute tongue and the impeller passage outlet. The fluctuation of relative velocity of solid-phase flow is 7.6% smaller than liquid-phase flow at the impeller outlet on circular path. Head and radial forces of the impeller are 8.1% and 85.7% of fluctuation, respectively. The results provide a theoretical basis for further research for turbulence, improving efficient, reducing the hydraulic losses and wear. Finally, field tests were carried out to verify the operation and wear of slurry pump.展开更多

The simulation results show that the lift coefficient is slightly less than that of unsteady numerical simulation, and the drag coefficient is slightly less than that of unsteady numerical simulation. The ground disturbance to the wing not only affects the steady state flow field, but also is closely related to the unsteady aerodynamic performance. The results of this study can provide a reference for the design and flight control of large aircraft wings.展开更多

This new approach consists in heating the surface in an unsteady regime using electrically resistant strips embedded in the wing skin. The control of the boundary layer's separation and transition point will provide a reduction in friction drag, and hence a reduction in fuel consumption. This new method consists in applying the required thermal power in the different strips in order to ensure the desired temperatures on the aircraft wing. We also have to determine the optimum size of these strips (length, width and distance between two strips). This implies finding the best mathematical model corresponding to the physics enabling us to facilitate the calculation for any type of material used for the wings. Secondly, the heating being unsteady, and, as during a flight the flow conditions or the ambient temperatures vary, the thermal power needed changes and must be chosen as fast as possible in order to ensure optimal operating conditions.展开更多

Singular integral equation for the flow has been founded through distributing the sources and sinks on the symmetrical axis. The supereavity length at each moment is determined by solving the singular integral equation with finite difference method. The supercavity shape at each moment is obtained by solving the partial differential equation with variable coefficient. For the case that the wedge takes the impulse and uniformly variable motion, numerical results of time history of the supercavity length and shape are presented. The calculated results indicate that the shape and the length of the supercavity vary in a similar way to the case that the wedge takes variable motion, and there is a time lag in unsteady supercavitating flow induced by the variation of wedge velocity.展开更多

A bubble dynamics cavitation model was used to investigate the unsteady behavior of cavitating flow and describe the generation and evaporation of vapor phase. For choosing the turbulence model and mesh size a non cavitating study was conducted. Three turbulence models such as Spalart-Allmaras, Shear Stress Turbulence (SST) κ-ω model, Re-Normalization Group (RNG) κ-ε model with enhanced wall treatment are used to capture the turbulent boundary layer along the hydrofoil surface. The cavitating study presents an unsteady behavior of the partial cavity attached to the foil at different time steps for σ = 0.8 and σ = 0.4. Moreover, this study is focused on cavitation inception, the shape and general behavior of sheet cavitation, lift and drag forces for different cavitation numbers.展开更多

The constitutive model proposed by Ericksen was used to represent the role of fiber additives on the stress tensor. The generalized eigenvalue equation governing the hydrodynamic stability of the system was solved using a direct numerical procedure. The results showed that the fiber additives can suppress the instability of the flow. At the same time, the non-axisymmetric disturbance is the preferred mode that makes the fiber suspensions unstable when the ratio of the angular ve- locity of the outer cylinder to that of the inner cylinder is a large negative number.展开更多

The straight-bladed vertical-axis turbine is regarded as a useful tool to capture the tidal current energy especially under low-speed conditions. A 2D unsteady numerical model based on Ansys-Fluent 12.0 is established to conduct the numerical simulation, which is validated by the corresponding experimental data. For the unsteady calculations, the SST model, 2x 105 and 0.01 s are se- lected as the proper turbulence model, mesh number, and time step, respectively. Detailed contours of the velocity distributions around the rotor blade foils have been provided for a flow field analysis. The tip speed ratio (TSR) determines the azimuth angle of the appearance of the torque peak, which occurs once for a blade in a single revolution. It is also found that simply increasing the incident flow velocity could not improve the turbine performance accordingly. The peaks of the averaged power and torque coeffi- cients appear at TSRs of 2.1 and 1.8, respectively. Furthermore, several shapes of the duct augmentation are proposed to improve the turbine performance by contracting the flow path gradually from the open mouth of the duct to the rotor. The duct augmentation can significantly enhance the power and torque output. Furthermore, the elliptic shape enables the best performance of the turbine. The numerical results prove the capability of the present 2D model for the unsteady hydrodynamics and an operating performance analy- sis of the vertical tidal stream turbine.展开更多

Simulation results show that COVM is an improvement over the previous ones theoretically. Then, the stability condition of the model is obtained by the linear stability analysis, which has shown that the model could obtain a bigger stable region than previous models in the phase diagram. Through the nonlinear analysis, the Burgers, Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and modified KdV (mKdV) equations are derived for the triangular shock wave, the soliton wave, and the kink-antikink soliton wave. At the same time, numerical simulations are also carried out to show that the model could simulate these density waves.展开更多
