Text Difficulty,Working Memory Capacity and Mind Wandering During Chinese EFL Learners’Reading

This experimental study investigated how text difficulty and different working memory capacity(WMC)affected Chinese EFL learners’reading comprehension and their tendency to engage in task-unrelated thoughts,that is,mind wandering(MW),in the course of reading.Sixty first-year university non-English majors participated in the study.A two-factor mixed experimental design of 2(text difficulty:difficult and simple)×2(WMC:high/large and low/small)was employed.Results revealed that 1)the main and interaction effects of WMC and text difficulty on voluntary MW were significant,whereas those on involuntary MW were not;2)while reading the easy texts,the involuntary MW of high-WMC individuals was less frequent than that of low-WMC ones,whereas while reading the difficult ones,the direct relationship between WMC and involuntary MW was not found;and that 3)high-WMC individuals had a lower overall rate of MW and better reading performance than low-WMC individuals did,but with increasing text difficulty,their rates of overall MW and voluntary MW were getting higher and higher,and the reading performance was getting lower and lower.These results lend support to WM theory and have pedagogical implications for the instruction of L2 reading. 展开更多

The inversions of complex geophysical data always solve multi-parameter, nonlinear, and multimodal optimization problems. Searching for the optimal inversion solutions is similar to the social behavior observed in swarms such as birds and ants when searching for food. In this article, first the particle swarm optimization algorithm was described in detail, and ant colony algorithm improved. Then the methods were applied to three different kinds of geophysical inversion problems: (1) a linear problem which is sensitive to noise, (2) a synchronous inversion of linear and nonlinear problems, and (3) a nonlinear problem. The results validate their feasibility and efficiency. Compared with the conventional genetic algorithm and simulated annealing, they have the advantages of higher convergence speed and accuracy. Compared with the quasi-Newton method and Levenberg-Marquardt method, they work better with the ability to overcome the locally optimal solutions. 展开更多

By combining the wavelet decomposition with kernel method, a practical approach of universal multiscale wavelet kernels constructed in reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) is discussed, and an identification scheme using wavelet support vector machines (WSVM) estimator is proposed for nordinear dynamic systems. The good approximating properties of wavelet kernel function enhance the generalization ability of the proposed method, and the comparison of some numerical experimental results between the novel approach and some existing methods is encouraging. 展开更多

Inspired by the traditional Wold's nonlinear PLS algorithm comprises of NIPALS approach and a spline inner function model,a novel nonlinear partial least squares algorithm based on spline kernel(named SK-PLS)is proposed for nonlinear modeling in the presence of multicollinearity.Based on the inner-product kernel spanned by the spline basis functions with infinite number of nodes,this method firstly maps the input data into a high-dimensional feature space,and then calculates a linear PLS model with reformed NIPALS procedure in the feature space and gives a unified framework of traditional PLS "kernel" algorithms in consequence.The linear PLS in the feature space corresponds to a nonlinear PLS in the original input(primal)space.The good approximating property of spline kernel function enhances the generalization ability of the novel model,and two numerical experiments are given to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method. 展开更多
