Low-temperature collecting performance of a new combined collector on scheelite flotation

The reduced ability of fatty acids to dissolve and disperse at low temperatures limits their effectiveness in winter applications.In this study,a green and environment-friendly reagent,polyethylene glycol 2000(PEG-2000),was used to evaluate its effect on the collecting performance of sodium oleate during scheelite flotation at low temperatures.The effect of PEG-2000 on the flotation of scheelite with the collector sodium oleate(NaOL)was studied by flotation tests,surface tension tests,infrared spectral analysis,and zeta potential measurements.Flotation tests showed that adding PEG-2000 can enhance the collecting ability of NaOL on scheelite at low temperature(5℃).The recovery of scheelite with the mixed collector of PEG-200 and NaOL is 4.39%higher than that with NaOL only.The surface tension tests,infrared spectral analysis and zeta potential measurements revealed that PEG-2000 and OL^(−)are co-adsorbed on the scheelite surface at low temperatures.The presence of PEG-2000 promoted the increase of the adsorption concentration of oleate ions(OL^(−))on the scheelite surface.The reason was that PEG-2000 has a shielding effect on the electrostatic repulsion between the OL^(−)groups,which changes the micellar configuration of OL^(−)in the solution system and makes the OL^(−)gather more tightly on the surface of scheelite,leading to the enhancement of its hydrophobicity.This discovery provides a reference for the development of collecting reagents for efficient flotation recovery of scheelite under low temperature environment. 展开更多

Gemini quaternary ammonium salt surfactants, butane-a, co-bis(dimethyl dodeculammonium bromide) (BDDA) ethane-a, fl-bis(dimethyl dodeculammonium bromide) (EDDA) were adopted to comparatively study the flotation behaviors of kaolinite, pyrophyllite and illite. It was found that three silicate minerals all exhibited good floatability with Gemini cationic surfactants as collectors over a wide pH range, while BDDA showed a stronger collecting power than EDDA. FTIR spectra and zeta potential analysis indicated that the mechanism of adsorption of Gemini collector molecules on three silicate minerals surfaces was almost identical for the electronic attraction and hydrogen bonds effect. The theoretically obtained results of density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G (d) level demonstrated the stronger collecting power of BDDA presented in the floatation test and zeta potential measurement. 展开更多

The surface and interfacial properties of polymeric bonding agents and nitramine crystal fillers were studied. The surface free energy and adhesion work of polymeric bonding agents and nitramine fillers were calculated by using Kaeble′s equations. It was observed that the hydroxyl values of neutral polymeric bonding agents (NPBA) correlate well with the polar components of surface free energies. On the basis of the measurements of swelling ratio and initial modulus, the interfacial bonding through highly crosslinked polymeric shell formation around the nitramine particles and generating interfacial reinforcement were rationalized. The application of Tapping Mode AFM (atomic force micro scope) to observing the surface morphology of NPBA reveals that methyl acrylate monomer appears to play a role for aiding the formation of network like structure when nanometer scale images of NPBA are created. 展开更多

The mesoporous hydroxyapatite (HA) was synthesized by hydrothermal method utilizing cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as template. The crystalline phase, morphology and porous structure were characterized respectively by different detecting techniques. The results reveal that the particles are highly crystalline hydroxyapatite phase. The surfactant has little influence on the morphology of the crystals, but affects the porous structure obviously. The sample without CTAB has a low surface area not exceeding 33 m^2/g, and no distinct pores can be observed by TEM. While the samples obtained with the surfactant get better parameters. Numerous open-ended pores centered at 2-7 nm spread unequally on the surface of the hydroxyapatite nanorods. The N2 adsorption-desorption experiments show type IV isotherms with distinct hysteresis loops, illustrating the presence of mesoporous structure. When the mole ratio of CTAB to HA is 1:2, the sample has the largest surface area of 97.1 m^2/g and pore volume of 0.466 cm^3/g. 展开更多

To address such ... With the significant discharge of antibiotic wastewater into the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, antibiotic pollution has become a serious problem and presents a hazardous risk to the environment. To address such issues, various investigations on the removal of antibiotics have been undertaken. Photocatalysis has received tremendous attention owing to its great potential in removing antibiotics from aqueous solutions via a green, economic, and effective process. However, such a technology employing traditional photocatalysts suffers from major drawbacks such as light absorption being restricted to the UV spectrum only and fast charge recombination. To overcome these issues, considerable effort has been directed towards the development of advanced visible light-driven photocatalysts. This mini review summarises recent research progress in the state-of-the-art design and fabrication of photocatalysts with visible-light response for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic wastewater. Such design strategies involve the doping of metal and non-metal into ultraviolet light-driven photocatalysts, development of new semiconductor photocatalysts, construction of heterojunction photocatalysts, and fabrication of surface plasmon resonance-enhanced photocatalytic systems. Additionally, some perspectives on the challenges and future developments in the area of photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics are provided. 展开更多

Extraction of theanine from waste liquid of tea polyphenol production was studied in aqueous surfactanttwo-phase system (ASTP) with cationic surfactant (CTAB) and anionic surfactant (SDS). Results indicate that the region of ASTP is narrow and there is only a two-phase region of cationic surfactant. The increase in concentrations of NaBr and Na2SO4 are beneficial to the formation of ASTP. Theanine concentration in the bottom phase increases with increasing concentration of theanine, whereas the Partition coefficient and extraction rate only change a littlewhen the concentration of theanine is above 0.2 g.L-'. With the increase of SDS concentration, the phase ratio and the partition coefficient decrease, while the extraction efficiency of theanine increases and the concentration of theanine changes a little in the range from 2.4/7.5 to 2.8/7.2 for SDS/CTAB ratio. The temperature has a notable ef- fect on the concentration of theanine in the bottom phase, partition coefficient and extraction rate of theanine. The increase of waste liquid decreases the phase ratio, increases the concentration and extraction rate of theanine in the bottom ohase, since the orotein and the saccharide enter the bottom nhase with theanine. 展开更多

A novel intercluster potential mod... The Brownian dynamics (BD) simulation of a dilute surfactant solution is conducted in a steady shear flow. The rodlike micelle is assumed as a rigid rod composed of lined-up beads. A novel intercluster potential model is introduced for describing the interactions between, micelles. In the model, the Lennard-Jones and the soft-sphere potentials are used as inter-bead potentials for end-end and interior-interior beads, respectively. The micelles are combined at their ends to form a network structure at lower shear rates and are disconnected to become more and more parallel to the shear flow direction with increasing shear rate. The change of micellar microstructures with the variation of the shear rate results in shear thinning characteristics of the computed shear viscosities and first normal stress difference coefficients. The effects of surfactant solution concentration on the micellar structures and rheological properties are also investigated. Results show that the shear viscosities and the first normal stress difference coefficients increase with increasing the viscosity of the surfactant solution. 展开更多

The interaction of DNA with cationic gemini suffactant trimethylene-1,3-bis (dodecyl dimethyl-ammonium bromide) (12-3-12) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) mixed system has been investigated by measuring the fluorescence, zeta potential, UV-Vis spectrum, and circular dichroism. In the absence of SDS, owing to the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, 12-3-12 forms micelle-like structure on the DNA chain before the micellization in bulk phase. For the mixed system of 12-3-12 and SDS, the negative charges on SDS can compete against DNA to bind with cationic 12-3-12 because of the stronger interaction between oppositely charged surfactants, and thus, the catanionic mixed micelles are formed before the formation of DNA/12-3-12 complexes. There-after, the positive charges on the mixed micelles bind with DNA, and thus, the change of the zeta potential from negative to positive is distinctly different from the system without SDS. Meanwhile, the existence of SDS postpones the exclusion of ethidium bromide (EB) from DNA/EB complexes. The conformation of DNA undergoes a change from native B-form to chiral ψ-phase as binding with 12-3-12 process. Upon adding SDS to the DNA/12-3-12 complex solution, however, DNA is released to the bulk and the ψ-phase returns to B-form again. 展开更多

The products were investigated by X-ray diffraction, thermo gravimetry and differential thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron micraseopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Interaction of anionic polyelectrolyte with cationic gemini surfactant has been investigated by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation.Polyelectrolyte facilitates the oppositely charged ionic surfactants to aggregate by suppressing the electrostatic repulsion between ionic head groups leading to the formation of micellar complex.With addition of surfactant,the conformation of polyion chain changes from stretched to random coiled to spherical,and at the same time more free micelles are formed by surfactants in mixtures.Increasing the length of spacer or tail chain in gemini surfactant will weaken its interaction with polyelectrolyte and simultaneously strengthen its tendency to self-assemble.The simulation results are consistent with experimental observations and reveal that the electrostatic interaction plays an important role in the interaction of polyelectrolyte with gemini sur- factant. 展开更多

Adsorption isotherms of metsulfuron and bensulfuron on a hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) bromide-modified paddy soil under different ionic strengths, with divalent cation Cu^2+, or having different pH were studied to describe their adsorptive behavior, and to try to explain the adsorption process of a sulfonylurea compound with a carbamoylsulfamoyl group in the modified soil environment. All the adsorption isotherms fitted the Freundlich equation well, and the HDTMA treatment of paddy soil dramatically enhanced adsorption capacity of metsulfuron or bensulfuron. Also, an increase of ionic strength and the addition of divalent heavy metal cation Cu^2+ on the HDTMA-modified paddy soil increased the adsorption of metsulfuron or bensulfuron. Additionally, for metsulfuron and bensulfuron in the aqueous phase, adsorption capacity of the HDTMA-modified paddy soft gradually increased with decreasing pH. 展开更多

The two mixtures were AEO9/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and AEO9/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at molar fraction of AEO9, A EO9 α =0.5. The surface properties of the surfactants, critical micelle concentration (CMC), effectiveness of surface tension reduction (γCMC), maximum surface excess concentration (Γmax) and minimum area per molecule at the air/solution interface (Amin) were determined for both individual surfactants and their mixtures. The significant deviations from ideal behavior (attractive interactions) of the nonionic/ionic surfactant mixtures were determined. Mixtures of both AEO9/SDS and AEO9/CTAB exhibited synergism in surface tension reduction efficiency and mixed micelle formation, but neither exhibited synergism in surface tension reduction effectiveness. 展开更多

The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of different surfactants on the removal efficiency of heavy metals in sewage sludge treated by a method combining bio-acidification with Fenton oxidation. Four surfactants were adopted such as anionic surfactant(sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, SDBS), nonionic surfactants(tween-20 and tween-60) and cationic surfactant(hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, HTAC), respectively. The indigenous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in bio-acidification phase were enriched and cultured from fresh activated sludge obtained from a wastewater treatment plant. It is shown that different surfactants exhibited distinct effect on the removal efficiency of heavy metals from sewage sludge. The nonionic surfactants,especially tween-60, promotes the solubilization of heavy metals, while the anionic and cationic surfactants hinder the removal of heavy metals. Copper is efficiently leached. The removal efficiency of cadium is relatively lower than that of Cu due to the demand for rigorous p H value. Lead is leached with a low efficiency as the formation of low soluble Pb SO4 precipitates. 展开更多

The adsorption of dedecyltrimethylammoium chloride(DTAC) and hexadecyltrimethylammoium chloride(CTAC) on muscovite mica substrates was examined using atomic force microscopy(AFM). Adsorption morphology images and interaction forces of cationic surfactants at solid-solution interfaces were measured in tapping mode and Pico Force mode, respectively. The images demonstrated that the adsorbed structure was varied by a variety of surfactant concentrations. The adsorbed layer on mica was monolayer at first, and then became bilayer. A striped adsorbed structure was observed in a higher concentration of CTAC,which could not be found in any other concentrations of DTAC. For force measurements, the repulsive force was exponentially decreasing with the concentration increasing till a net attractive force appeared. A largest attractive force could be observed at a certain concentration, which was close to the point of charge neutralization. The results also showed a significant impact of hydrocarbon chain length on adsorption. An adsorption simulation was established to give a clear understanding of the interaction between cationic surfactants and mica. 展开更多

Distribution of TX114 between coacervate and aqueous phases in clouding of various initial TX114 concentrations was studied. Effects of temperature and salinity (Na2SO4) on the distribution of TX114 concentration were also investigated. Differing from the nonionic surfactant C12E10, the distribution of TX114 is sensitive to the temperature, and it is observed that the TX114 concentration in the aqueous phase (Caq) does not depend on the initial TX114 concentration apparently at 45℃, and the Caq decreases with an increase of NazSO4 concentration. Low initial TX114 concentration in unclouded solutions, high Na2SO4 concentration, and temperature are suggested to control the surfactant loss in large-scale cloud point extraction applications. 展开更多

The effect of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), an anionic surfactant used widely in household products and industrial processes, on saturated hydraulic conductivities (Ksat) of an Anthrosol saturated with sodium (Na-soil) or calcium (Ca-soil) was analyzed in a laboratory experiment using the constant head method, and adsorption and dispersion experiments were also conducted to infer the possible mechanisms of Ksat fluctuations. The results showed that SDBS was more intensely adsorbed in the Ca-soil than in the Na-soil. With an increase in the SDBS concentration, the stability of the Na-soil suspensions decreased when the SDBS concentration was less than 1.2 mmol L-1 and then above this concentration, increased markedly, while the stability of the Ca-soil suspensions increased gradually at all SDBS concentrations studied. With an increase in the SDBS concentration, the Ksat of the Na-soil increased, which resulted mainly from the increase of water channels in the soil because of the coagulation of the soil particles, while the Ksat of Ca-soil decreased mainly on account of the clogging of partial water channels by precipitated Ca(DBS)2 and the fine soil particles generated. 展开更多
