This paper reviews the various monitoring techniques of agricultural non-point source pollution, including runoff pollutant monitoring, leaching pollutant monitoring and on-line monitoring. The runoff pollutant monitoring methods are mainly included artificial simulation of rain- fall runoff method, flow meter method, weir method and volumetric method. The leaching pollutant monitoring methods are mainly included leaching plate method, leaching gutter method, leakage pooling method, pumping filter pipe method and simulating soil column method. Aiming to get the strata behavior and stability rules of surrounding rock of the main return airway of Yushujing Coal Mine, convergence deformation of two sides and force of U-shaped steel yieldable support and bolt were monitored, and deformation of surrounding rock and mechanical characteristics of support structure were timely obtained to guide the informa- tion construction and optimize supporting parameters in water-rich soft rock roadway. The field monitoring results indicate the following. (1) Convergence displacement of rock surface increases with time continuity and shows surrounding rock's intense theological behavior. The original support scheme cannot control the large deformation and strongly theological behavior; (2) Without backfilling, the U-shaped steel support begins to bear load after erecting for 4-7 days and increases rapidly in the first 30 days. The U-shaped steel support at the right shoulder and top of roadway bears a larger force and the left side and shoulder bears a smaller force; (3) The stress of bolt increasing over time and at the right shoulder of roadway has larger growth and value. The mechanism of rock deformation and the failure and strata behavior in water-rich soft rock roadway are revealed based on the results of the measured relaxation zone of surrounding rock, measured stresses, and the rock mechanics tests. 展开更多

The long-term reclamation-induced ground subsidence in Macao, a coastal city of southern China was investigated. Persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) technique was applied to retrieve the deformation rate in Macao during the period from April 2003 to August 2010 with a total of 41 scenes of descending ASAR data sets. The PSI-retrieved results show a relatively stable pattern in Macao Peninsula, Taipa Island and Coloane Island, with an average subsidence velocity of -3 mm/a. In contrast, relatively large subsidence rates are highlighted in Cotai area, a new reclamation land in 1990s, in which an average subsidence velocity is about -10 mm/a. A consistent relationship between the PSI results and the leveling measurements indicate that this PSI technique is an effective tool to monitor the reclamation-induced ground subsidence with a high accuracy and adequate spatial details. Accordingly, the valuable ground subsidence results generated by PSI can be used not only for early detection and remedial activities of potential settlement of building, but also for helping the local government to formulate regional sustainable development planning and decision-making in disaster prevention and mitigation. 展开更多

The system developed for monitoring of behavior of a powered support in a mechanized Iongwall sublevel caving face. The logging system can be programmed for logging the data from the sensors at different logging intervals ranging from 16 h to 1 ms for logging variation in hydraulic pressures in legs and convergence of the support during progressive face advance. For recording dynamic loads, the data logger can be programmed to start fast logging, say at 10 ms intervals, when the pressure in a leg reaches a pre-specified threshold value, and continue fast logging until the pressure drops below this threshold value. In order to observe CO_2 characteristics in the unsaturated zone of loess tableland and further understand the carbon cycle,a series of tubes for gas monitoring and sampling were installed in an approximately 90-m deep Qiushe loess section of Lingtai County,Northwestern China.The results show that the concentration of CO_2 was higher in loess than in the atmosphere,reaching a maximum of 6970 lmol·mol^(-1).CO_2 concentrations in loess were higher in summer than in winter.The CO_2 in loess was related to organic carbon decomposed by microbes,and to the CaCO_3–H_2O–CO_2 system in the interface between the saturated and unsaturated zones. 展开更多

Objectives This study aimed to investigate clinical leadership behaviors among critical care nurses and compare the differences between nurses in private and public hospitals.Methods A cross-sectional survey including 365 critical care nurses with a bachelor’s degree in nursing science were recruited in two Egyptian hospitals(a government teaching hospital and one private hospital from January to March 2019.A socio-demographic characteristics form and the Clinical Leadership Behaviors Questionnaire(CLB-Q)were used to collect data.For comparison and analysis,the mean score was calculated and converted to a percentage value.Results Results showed that the overall mean score of nurses’clinical leadership behaviors was 77.11±11.87,the level was higher,and the highest score of the communication dimension was 91.84±7.38.The mean score of nurses at a private hospital(90.48±5.53)was higher than that at a government teaching hospital(68.29±4.21)(P<0.001).On nursing experience,nurses with 5–10 years had higher mean score in self-awareness,advocacy and empowerment,decision making,quality and safety,teamwork,and clinical excellence dimension of clinical leadership behavior than those who worked less than 5 years or more than 10 years(P<0.01).Single nurses had higher mean score in advocacy and empowerment,decision making,quality and safety,and clinical excellence dimension of clinical leadership behavior than those who married(P<0.01).Conclusions Nurse managers should foster clinical leadership by enabling critical care nurses to practice clinical excellence and encouraging their attendance in training programs on quality and safety.Nurses in government hospitals need improvement in clinical leadership behaviors regarding all dimensions. 展开更多

Land development increases impervious surfaces causing significant negative impacts to aquatic ecosystems. Many impervious surface estimates are derived from remote sensing data, developed by using different methods and often out of date. Remote sensing data is often at scales applicable to regional management, but not local planning decisions. To date, no standardized annual dataset of percent impervious surface exists for use at both local and watershed scales. Effective communication between natural resource managers and local planners has been lacking. One solution is to monitor percent impervious surface with a relative index rather than direct measure. A relative index model can use a currency, like foundation square feet per hectare, which is useful for all decision makers. One data source for developing a relative index of impervious surface is property tax data. These data document annual land development at local scale. Here, the author presents the use of Maryland property tax data to index land development and percent impervious surface. 展开更多

Previous investigations have shown that the seismic response of slopes during the Wenchuan earthquake was highly variable. The present study tries to give an answer to the question: Which are the main factors affecting the seismic response degree of slopes? With the support of the China Geological Survey Bureau, we set 3 monitoring sections in Jiulong slope, Mianzhu city, China with the aim to record the site response of the slope during the affershoeks of the Wenehuan earthquake. After the Wenchuan earthquake, which happened on 12 May 2008, 30 aftershocks have been recorded in these monitoring points. We analyzed 11 records, with magnitudes ranging from ML = 4.6 to ML = 3.1. The amplification factors of the horizontal compound PGA and 3D compound PGA have been determined for the 3 points at different elevations on the slope. Results showed that the dynamic response of the slope on the earthquake was controlled by factors such as topography and the thickness of the Quaternary overburden. 展开更多

Some recent studies presented two existing types of ENSO events, one is the Eastern-Pacific(EP) type and the other the Central-Pacific(CP) type. This study examined the monitoring ability of several current operational ENSO indices. The results indicated that a single index could not distinguish the EP and CP in the historical ENSO events during 1950-2009. The Nio 3 index may only be suitable for monitoring the EP-type ENSO, while the Nio 4 index works only for the CP-type ENSO. In order to capture the occurrence of ENSO events and distinguish the type, we considered a new monitoring index group using Nio 3 and Nio 4 indices. Further analysis confirmed that this index group can monitor different types of historical ENSO events with different spatial distribution of sea surface temperature. It has a good performance in determining the characteristics of the ENSO events, including peak intensity, onset,decay, and mature phase. 展开更多

NIOSH ground control safety research program at Spokane,Washington,is exploring applications of photogrammetry to rock mass and support monitoring. This paper describes two ways photogrammetric techniques are being used. First,photogrammetric data of laboratory testing is being used to correlate energy input and support deformation. This information can be used to infer remaining support toughness after ground deformation events. This technique is also demonstrated in a field application.Second,field photogrammetric data is compared to crackmeter data from a deep underground mine.Accuracies were found to average 8 mm,but have produced results within 0.2 mm of true displacement,as measured by crackmeters. Application of these techniques consists of monitoring overall fault activity by monitoring multiple points around the crackmeter. A case study is provided in which a crackmeter is clearly shown to have provided insufficient information regarding overall fault ground deformation.Photogrammetry is proving to be a useful ground monitoring tool due to its unobtrusiveness and ease of use. 展开更多

The instrumentation, method and measurement results used for measurements of CO2 concentrations in surface air of Obninsk (55.1° N, 36.9° E, 183 m above the sea level) located at a distance of 105 km to the south-west of Moscow are presented. Proposed is a method of experimental data filtering allowing one to separate natural and anthropogenic variations of CO2 concentrations. It is shown that minimal concentrations of CO2 registered in Obninsk and at the continental stations of GAW WMO characterize not only the "regional background" but also coincide with the data from GAW WMO background stations located in the oceanic regions. In this connection, one can assume that the excess in measured CO2 concentration over its minimal values, making about 5-6 ppm, is connected with an anthropogenic emission, and the continent should be considered as an anthropogenic source of C02. 展开更多

The paper introduces an experimental program focused on the monitoring of de-icing salts resistance, depending on surface roughness. Quantitative evaluation of the concrete surface was performed by using confocal laser scanning microscopy, which is the new generation of optical systems that are able to make all measurements in 3D resolution. For elucidating applicability of FSM (field signature method) on detection of fatigue crack initiation and monitoring of its propagation, a series of fatigue tests on steel plate decks (4,625 × 2,250 mm^2) stiffened in lattice-shape by longitudinal and lateral ribs was carried out by using a wheel load traveling test machine. The fatigue crack was observed by visual inspection at the weld toe between the deck plate and the longitudinal rib when the number of wheel load traveling repetition was around 210 thousands. The response of FSM-monitoring, which was the potential difference change between the sensing pins (pair), became clear when the number of the repetition was around 190 thousands. The fatigue crack initiation could be detected by FSM considerably earlier than visual inspection. The fatigue crack propagation such as the direction could also be monitored even though the distance of the sensing pins was extended to 230 mm. On the other hand, the electric field analysis for the virgin situation without any cracks was carried out. The results of analysis indicated that 60 mm length of crack which could not be confirmed by visual inspection could be detected by FSM. 展开更多
