Numerical simulation enables a systematic analysis of major flow parameters such as jet velocity, turbulent kinetic energy as well as void fraction of cavitation. Experiments facilitate an objective assessment of surface morphology, micro hardness and surface roughness of the impinged samples. A comparison is implemented between submerged and non-submerged water jets. The results show that submerged water jet is characterized by low velocity magnitudes relative to non-submerged water jet at the same jet pressure. Shear effect serves as a key factor underlying the inception of cavitation in submerged water jet stream. Predicted annular shape of cavity zone is substantiated by local height distributions associated with experimentally obtained footprints. As jet pressure increases, joint contribution of jet kinetic energy and cavitation is demonstrated. While for non-submerged water jet, impingement force stems exclusively from flow velocity.展开更多

The so-called 'transfer number', which is defined as the mean numberof transfer from non-impact state to impact state per iteration, is locked onto a lot of rational values to form a curveconsisting of many steps. Our numerical investigation confirms that every step is confined by conditions created by thecollision between the periodic orbit and the discontinuous boundary of the system. After the last collision the systemshows a chaotic motion with intermittent characteristics. Therefore the staircase can be addressed as a 'prelude staircaseto type V intermittency'. The similar phenomenon has also been observed in a model of electric circuit. These resultsof our study suggest that this kind of staircases is common in two (or even higher) dimensional discontinuous maps.展开更多

However, it has been well known that the corresponding gear pairs are relatively weak under the situation of impact loadings. To improve this phenomenon, a new pretensioning gear system with cycloid teeth rather than the involute ones was proposed, and dual cycloidal gear mechanisms were designed for satisfying geometric constraints and dynamic loading conditions. The simulations of the prototypes were conducted by LS-DYNA program and the experiments for a prototype were performed for a dynamic model with impact loading devices. The results show that the better operation and the smoother motion are confirmed in the proposed cycloidal gear system rather than the conventional one without interferences between gear teeth under the impact of a crash.展开更多

Various forming parameters like dome height, effective strain and stress distribution, hardness, and grain size evolution have been measured. Circular grids are printed on the sheets and Hill’s 1948 yield criterion is used to calculate the effective strain distribution. The effective stress distribution is calculated by using the Hollomon’s power law. The strain evolution during the forming process is monitored by mounting a strain rosette at the mid location of the sheet. The strain-time graph confirms the sharp rise in the peak strain and it increases significantly at higher pressure. The variation in the forming parameters asserts that the material stretches uniformly without strain localization. The optical microstructures also depict that the equiaxed grains are stretched and elongated after the shock deformation. This analysis confirms that the forming behavior of the material is dependent both on the degree of pre-strain and the change in pressure.展开更多

This presentation refers to interventions in two Spanish National Monuments: the Collegiate Church of Roa de Duero and San Esteban's church of Los Balbases. The Collegiate Church was built during the 16th century. It is considered the jewel of the villa. It is a "hallenkirche" model with three big naves of the same height covered by beautiful starry vaults. The intervention consisted of restoring the wooden roof structure, preserving the original 16th centary structure, by replacing the damaged elements. It was restored according to archaeological criteria. San Esteban's church is a 13 century Gothic style church with a Latin cross plan. It has three naves with a transept of great slenderness. It preserves Romanesque remains. Opposite to the previous intervention we decided to rebuild the roof because the former roof was totally distorted due to bad executed works during the past Century. In this way we regain the original shape of the church. These interventions aim to improve constructive and structural conditions as well as retrieve the image of both monuments. We have studied the visual impact of interventions through virtual recreations. The intervention criteria are very different, restoration versus structttral reconstruction.展开更多

The survivability of the floating model with a mooring system was tested under extreme wave of 10-year return period. In the numerical simulation of the Gaussian method, the narrow band model was applied to obtain the first-order wave surface equation and the modified second-order wave surface equation. The hydrodynamic responses of the floating body,i.e. radiation damping, added mass,second-order wave excitation force and drifting force, were computed by using the potential flow theory based on higher order boundary element method in frequent domain. In the experimental analysis,high-frequency sensors were installed at the lower deck to measure the wave slamming loads. Equivalent truncated mooring system was applied to make sure position of the floating body in the wave tank. The comparison between the numerical and experimental results showed the numerical model underestimated the air gap of the floating body. Nevertheless, the predictions of the high risk spots underneath the floating deck that is prone to wave slamming obtained from both models were agreeable to each other. The experimental results also revealed that the wave slamming events often occurred at the connection point between the rear columns and the lower deck.展开更多
