In this work,the flow surrounding the train was obtained using a detached eddy simulation(DES)for slipstream analysis.Two different streamlined nose lengths were investigated:a short nose(4 m)and a long nose(9 m).The time-average slipstream velocity and the time-average slipstream pressure along the car bodies were compared and explained in detail.In addition to the time-averaged values,the _(max)imum velocities and the pressure peak-to-peak values around the two trains were analyzed.The result showed that the nose length affected the slipstream velocity along the entire train length at the lower and upper regions of the side of the train.However,no significant effect was recognized at the middle height of the train along its length,except in the nose region.Moreover,within the train’s side regions(y=2.0-2.5 m and z=2-4 m)and(y=2.5-3.5 m and z=0.2-0.7 m),the ratio of slipstream velocity U_(max) between the short and long nose trains was notably higher.This occurrence also manifested at the train’s upper section,specifically where y=0-2.5 m and z=4.2-5.0 m.Similarly,regarding the ratio of _(max)imum pressure peak-to-peak values Cp-p_(max),significant regions were observed at the train’s side(y=1.8-2.6 m and z=1-4 m)and above the train(y=0-2 m and z=3.9-4.8 m). 展开更多

The sea surface roughnessn in the North-west Pacific Ocean is derived successfully using wind speed data estimated by the TOPEX satellite altimeter. From the results we find that: (1) the mean sea surface roughness in winter is greater than in summer; (2) compared with other sea areas, the sea surface roughness in the sea area east of Japan ( N30°- 40°, E135°- 150°) is larger than in other sea areas; (3) sea surface roughness in the South China Sea changes more greatly than that in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea. 展开更多

The boundary conditions and material properties, in fact, have considerable influence on the response of blast doors subjected to blast loading. In this paper, the dynamic responses of a reinforced concrete arched blast door under blast loading were analyzed by the finite element program ABAQUS, combined with a previously developed elasto-viscoplastic rate-sensitive material model. And the effect of the surrounding rock mass and contact effect of the doorframe were also taken into account in the simulation. It is demonstrated that the strain-rate effect has considerable influence on the response of reinforced concrete blast door subjected to blast loading and must be taken into account in the analysis. 展开更多

The wind directi... Two wind algorithms of ENVISAT advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR), i. e. CMOD4 model from the European Space Agency (ESA) and CMOD_IFR2 model from Quilfen et al., are compared in this paper. The wind direction is estimated from orientation of low and linear signatures in the ASAR imagery. The wind direction has inherently a 180° ambiguity since only a single ASAR image is used. The 180° ambiguity is eliminated by using the buoy data from the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) buoys moored in the Pacific. Wind speed is obtained with the two wind algorithms using both estimated wind direction and normalized radar cross section (NRCS). The retrieved wind results agree well with the data from Quikscat. The root mean square error (RMSE) of wind direction is 2.80°. The RMSEs of wind speed from CMOD4 model and CMOD_IFR2 model are 1.09 m/s and 0.60 m/s, respectively. The results indicate that the CMOD_IFR2 model is slight better than CMOD4 model at high wind. 展开更多

The variations of drag force acting on the windbreak and the bulk drag coefficients for different windbreak widths were studied experimentally in the Eiffel-type non-circulating wind tunnel at the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory, Saitama University, Japan, to elucidate the effects of windbreak width in the wind direction on wind velocity reduction behind a windbreak. The variations of flow field for different windbreak widths were studied numerically by using the two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation with a k-c turbulence closure model. Results show that the total drag force to wind increased with increasing windbreak width, but the bulk drag coefficient decreased slightly. The relationship between the bulk drag coefficient Cd and the windbreak width W and height H can be presented by the equation of Ca= kd (W/H)^-b (kd, b: constants). The result of the numerical simulation shows that the windbreak width greatly affects the location and the value of the minimum wind velocity. The wind velocity decreased by 15%-22% as the windbreak width increased. 展开更多

There are two main methods for assessing wind power: one ... Assessing wind energy is a key step in selecting a site for a wind farm. The accuracy of the assessment is essential for the future operation of the wind farm. There are two main methods for assessing wind power: one is based on observational data and the other relies on mesoscale numerical weather prediction(NWP). In this study, the wind power of the Liaoning coastal wind farm was evaluated using observations from an anemometer tower and simulations by the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF) model, to see whether the WRF model can produce a valid assessment of the wind power and whether the downscaling process can provide a better evaluation. The paper presents long-term wind data analysis in terms of annual, seasonal, and diurnal variations at the wind farm, which is located on the east coast of Liaoning Province. The results showed that, in spring and summer, the wind speed, wind direction, wind power density, and other main indicators were consistent between the two methods. However, the values of these parameters from the WRF model were significantly higher than the observations from the anemometer tower. Therefore, the causes of the differences between the two methods were further analyzed. There was much more deviation in the original material, National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP) final(FNL) Operational Global Analysis data, in autumn and winter than in spring and summer. As the region is vulnerable to cold-air outbreaks and windy weather in autumn and winter, and the model usually forecasted stronger high or low systems with a longer duration, the predicted wind speed from the WRF model was too large. 展开更多

In this paper, a comparative performance of fixed and variable speed wind generators with Pitch angle control has been presented. The first is based on a squirrel cage Induction Generator (IG) of 315 kW rated power, connected directly to the grid. The second incorporated a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) of 750 kW rated power. The performances of each studied wind generator are evaluated by simulation works and variable speed operation is highlighted as preferred mode of operation. 展开更多

The topic of offshore wind energy is attracting more and more attention as the energy crisis heightens.The blades are the key components of offshore wind turbines,and their dynamic characteristics directly determine the effectiveness of offshore wind turbines.With different rotating speeds and blade length,the rotating blades generate various centrifugal stiffening effects.To directly analyze the centrifugal stiffening effect of blades,the Rayleigh energy method (REM) was used to derive the natural frequency equation of the blade,including the centrifugal stiffening effect and the axial force calculation formula.The axial force planes and the first to third order natural frequency planes which vary with the rotating speed and length were calculated in three-dimensional coordinates.The centrifugal stiffening coefficient was introduced to quantitatively study the relationship between the centrifugal stiffening degree and the rotating speed,and then the fundamental frequency correction formula was built based on the rotating speed and the blade length.The analysis results show that the calculation results of the fundamental frequency correction formula agree with the theoretical calculation results.The error of calculation results between them is less than 0.5%. 展开更多

The probability distributions of wind speeds and the availability of wind turbines were investigated by considering the vertical wind shear. Based on the wind speed data at the standard height observed at a wind farm, the power-law process was used to simulate the wind speeds at a hub height of 60 m. The Weibull and Rayleigh distributions were chosen to express the wind speeds at two different heights. The parameters in the model were estimated via the least square(LS) method and the maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) method, respectively. An adjusted MLE approach was also presented for parameter estimation. The main indices of wind energy characteristics were calculated based on observational wind speed data. A case study based on the data of Hexi area, Gansu Province of China was given. The results show that MLE method generally outperforms LS method for parameter estimation, and Weibull distribution is more appropriate to describe the wind speed at the hub height. 展开更多

For validating the results of retrieved mean wave period, four empirical algorithms established previously are introduced. Based on the data of over five years derived from TOPEX satellite altimeter for the entire East China Sea, ocean wave periods were calculated and statistical comparison among them was performed. The retrieved mean wave period 〈T〉 obtained with our new distribution parameters showed better agreement with the wave period TB measured by buoy than that calculated by other three algorithms. The difference between the mean values of 〈T〉 and that of TB is 0.16 s and the RMSE (root mean square error) of 〈T〉 is the lowest value (0.48). 展开更多

Ocean waves alter the roughness of sea surface,and sea spray droplets redistribute the momentum flux at the air-sea interface.Hence,both wave state and sea spray influence sea surface drag coefficient.Based on the new sea spray generation function which depends on sea surface wave,a wave-dependent sea spray stress is obtained.According to the relationship between sea spray stress and the total wind stress on the sea surface,a new formula of drag coefficient at high wind speed is acquired.With the analysis of the new drag coefficient,it is shown that the drag coefficient reduces at high wind speed,indicating that the sea spray droplets can limit the increase of drag coefficient.However,the value of high wind speed corresponding to the initial reduced drag coefficient is not fixed,and it depends on the wave state,which means the influence of wave cannot be ignored.Comparisons between the theoretical and measured sea surface drag coefficients in field and laboratory show that under different wave ages,the theoretical result of drag coefficient could include the measured data,and it means that the new drag coefficient can be used properly from low to high wind speeds under any wave state condition. 展开更多

The streamline and hydrodynamic parameters were measured in a 2-D airlift loop reactor(ALR)with different draft baffles. Three regimes were observed under different conditions. Particle image velocimetry(PIV)measurement showed that the liquid velocity distribution in horizontal direction presented different profiles in the three regimes. The length, the height and the spacing of draft baffles were applied in the experiments to optimize the ALR structure. It was found that the draft tube structure is of great importance in determining the hydrodynamics of ALRs. Additionally, the experimental results may serve as a step to the further optimization and design of ALR. 展开更多

This work used the computational fluid dynamics method combined with full-scale train tests to analyze the train aerodynamic performance on special slope topography. Results show that with the increment in the slope gradient, the aerodynamic forces and moment increase sharply. Compared with the flat ground condition, the lateral force, lift force, and overturning moment of the train on the first line increase by 153.2%, 53.4% and 124.7%, respectively, under the slope gradient of 20°. However, with the increment of the windward side's depth, the windbreak effect is improved obviously. When the depth is equal to 10 m, compared with the 0 m, the lateral force, lift force and overturning moment of the train on the first line decrease by 70.9%, 77.0% and 70.6%,respectively. Through analyzing the influence of slope parameters on the aerodynamic performance of the train, the relationships among them are established. All these will provide a basic reference for enhancing train aerodynamic performances under different slope conditions and achieve reasonable train speeds for the operation safety in different wind environments. 展开更多

A design method was developed to specify the profile of the continuously variable Mach-number nozzle for the supersonic wind tunnel. The controllable contour design technique was applied to obtaining the original nozzle profile, while other Machnumbers were derived from the transformation of the original profile. A design scheme, covering a Mach-number range of3.0<Ma<4.0, was shown to illustrate the present design technique. To fully validate the present design method, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analyses were carried out to study the flow quality in the test area of the nozzle. The computed results indicate that exit uniform flow is obtained with 1.19% of the maximal Mach-number deviation at the nozzle exit. The present design method achieves the continuously variable Mach-number flow during a wind tunnel running. 展开更多

With high resolution (1 kin), the distribution of wind energy resources in Hainan province and over its offshore waters is numerically simulated by using the Wind Energy Simulation Toolkit (WEST) model developed by Meteorological Research Branch of Environment Canada. Compared with observations from eight coastal anemometric towers and 18 existing stations in the province, the simulations show good reproduction of the real distribution of wind resources in Hainan and over its offshore waters, with the relative error of annual mean wind speed being no more than 9% at the 70-m level. Moreover, based on the simulated results of WEST grids that are closest to where the eight wind towers are located, the annual mean wind speeds are further estimated by using the Danish software Wasp (Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program). The estimated results are then compared with the observations from the towers. It shows that the relative error is also less than 9%. Therefore, WEST and WEST+WAsP will be useful tools for the assessment of wind energy resources in high resolution and selection of wind farm sites in Hainan province and over its offshore waters. 展开更多
