China wind atlas was made by numerical simulation and the wind energy potential in China was calculated. The model system for wind energy resource assessment was set up based on Canadian Wind Energy Simulating Toolkit (WEST) and the simulating method was as follows. First, the weather classes were obtained depend on meteorological data of 30 years. Then, driven by the initial meteorological field produced by each weather class, the meso-scale model ran for the distribution of wind energy resources according each weather class condition one by one. Finally, averaging all the modeling output weighted by the occurrence frequency of each weather class, the annual mean distribution of wind energy resources was worked out. Compared the simulated wind energy potential with other results from several activities and studies for wind energy resource assessment, it is found that the simulated wind energy potential in mainland of China is 3 times that from the second and the third investigations for wind energy resources by CMA, and is similar to the wind energy potential obtained by NREL in Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment(SWERA) project. The simulated offshore wind energy potential of China seems smaller than the true value. According to the simulated results of CMA and considering lots of limited factors to wind energy development, the final conclusion can be obtained that the wind energy availability in China is 700~1 200 GW, in which 600~1 000 GW is in mainland and 100~200 GW is on offshore, and wind power will become the important part of energy composition in future. 展开更多

Economic Study of the Wind Energy Potential in Sahel

The wind pattern in Sahel is marked by a strong diurnal cycle as well as a strong seasonal cycle. The low level jet is blowing above the near-surface layer during nighttime and is decoupled from the surface. Nowadays, some studies showed the possibility to use the sub-jet wind at levels higher than 90 m as a source of energy in this area. In the present work, the wind turbines, with hub heights situated at 150 m and blade extremities at 150 ± 60 m, were used to make an economic study of wind energy potential in Sahel. Thus, monthly wind power was determined by two methods. The first involved the wind distributions directly observed. The second was based on the Weibull distributions which were fitted to the data. Day and night were compared. Results showed that this jet was an attractive source of energy provided if huge-capacity energy storage was used. So, the energy stored at night could be restored during the daytime, when the demand is highest. An economic study was done to estimate the number of wind turbines needed to satisfy the Niamey demand. The cost was found reasonably cheap relative to that of other renewable energy sources. 展开更多

Union Hidalgo municipality in Oaxaca State, Mexico, is located in an area with attractive wind potential. For this reason, this paper presents a preliminary study of the technical feasibility of wind power generation in Union Hidalgo, by a micro-study with a higher resolution than that used in Wind Resource Atlas of Oaxaea, published in April 2004. In this work, the wind map of Union Hidalgo was generated using the micro-scale model WAsP 9.1, with a resolution of 50 meters. Wind speed and direction data recorded at 15 m and 32 m agl (above ground level) over four years and seven months in a surface anemometer station were used. With Class 7 wind patterns, the results show values that justify the installation of wind turbines to produce electricity in the area. Estimated capacity factors (55% on average) are comparable with those obtained in wind power plants already operating in areas near Union Hidalgo and sites with high wind potential in other parts of the world. The topography of the study area is predominantly flat, and together with the directional behavior of the wind, which comes from the NNW 44% of the time, this favors the introduction of wind power plants in the area. 展开更多

In this paper, according to the Chinese government's action plan for coping with climate change, the China's wind energy sustainable development goals and development route are discussed, and the countermeasures and suggestions are put forward. Wind energy is currently a kind of important renewable energy with matured technology which can be scale-up developed and put into commercial application, and in this transformation, wind energy will play a key role with other non-fossil energy sources. The development and utilization of wind energy is a systematic project, which needs to be solved from the aspects of policy, technology and management. At present, China is in the stage of transferring from "large wind power country" to "strong wind power country", opportunities and challenges coexist, and the advantages of China's socialist system could be fully used, which can concentrate power to do big things and make contribution in the process of realizing global energy transformation. 展开更多

This paper develops a high time-resolution optimal power generation mix model in its time resolution of 10 minutes on 365 days by linear programming technique. The model allows us to analyse the massive deployment of photovoltaic system and wind power generation in power system explicitly considering those short-term output variation. PV (photovoltaic) and wind output are estimated, employing meteorological database. Simulation results reveal that variable fluctuation derived from a high penetration level of those renewables is controlled by quick load following operation of natural gas combined cycle power plant, pumped-storage hydro power, stationary NAS (sodium and sulfur) battery and the output suppression control of PV and wind. It additionally turns out that the operational configuration of those technologies for the renewable variability differs significantly depending on those renewable output variations in each season and solving the seasonal electricity imbalance as well as the daily imbalance is important if variable renewables are massively deployed. 展开更多

The relatively high cost of operation and maintenance associated to wind power is a major issue. Wind turbines are most of the time located in remote areas or offshore and these factors increase the referred operation and maintenance costs. Good maintenance strategies are needed to increase the health management of wind turbines. The objective of this paper is to show the application of neural networks to analyze all the wind turbine information to identify possible future failures, based on previous information of the turbine. 展开更多

Therefore it is expedient to look the potential of wind resources and prablems to use it. In this paper the potential resource of four characteristic offshore regions in Estonia are assessed. Two different approaches have been used to assess the dynamic quality of the wind power, both of which lead to the same result. The dynamic quality of the load of the grid is also assessed since any consumer will be affected by the total influence of both these dynamic processes. This study presents investigation and assessment of wind characteristics and wind energy potential for four sites at the Jordanian southern region (Hareer, Ma'an, Aqaba and Fujaij). Based on the available measured data sources, the data were analyzed using hourly and mean monthly WS (wind speed) data at different heights, using a two-parameter probability distribution of Weibull function. The recognized monthly and yearly Weibull functions were considered for the second analysis step. The wind potential energy yields assessment for an ideal capable wind turbine was implemented. Finally, for energy yield estimation, a wind turbine from Vestas with a 660 kW rated power was chosen. The wind turbine characteristics: AF (availability factor), CF (capacity factor) and wind turbine efficiency (η), were defined and calculated for each site. The result of the analysis showed that, all sites have good wind energy potential, the Hareer site at Tafila has the best wind resources. 展开更多

In order to ensure power system stability, modern wind turbines are required to be able to endure deep voltage dips. The specifications that determine the voltage dip versus time are called fault r/de-through (FRT) requirements. The purpose of this paper is not only to examine the FRT behavior of a full-power converter wind turbine but also to combine the power system viewpoint to the studies. It is not enough for the turbine to be FRT capable; the loss of mains (LOM) protection of the turbine must also be set to allow the FRT. Enabling FRT, however, means that the LOM protection settings must be loosen, which may sometimes pose a safety hazard. This article introduces unique real-time simulation environment and proposes an FRT method for a wind turbine that also takes the operation of LOM protection relay into account. Simulations are carried out using the simulation environment and results show that wind turbine is able to ride-through a symmetrical power system fault. 展开更多

This paper presents a fuzzy logic control for dual active bridge series resonant converters for DC smart grid application. The DC smart grid consists of wind turbine and photovoltaic generators, controllable and DC loads, and power converters. The proposed control method has been applied to the controllable load's and the grid side's dual active bridge series resonant converters for attaining control of the power system. It has been used for management of controllable load's state of charge, DC feeder's voltage stability during the loads and power variations from wind energy and photovoltaic generation and power flow management between the grid side and the DC smart grid. The effectiveness of the proposed DC smart grid operation has been verified by simulation results obtained by using MATLAB and PLECS cards. 展开更多

Electricity generation generally is made in thermal, hydro, geothermal power plants and windfarms/windparks. Because of some advantages such as renewability, low-cost, clean, safe and naturality geothermal and wind energy will have been electricity generation source in the near future. Turkey has hot water springs suitable for electricity generation between 130-242 ~C with natural vapor and hydrothermal alterations in connection with grabens limited to active faults and diffuse young volcanism in Western Anatolia Region. Other renewable energy and electricity generation resource is wind energy. In Turkey electricity generation is made by windfarms/windparks. These parks/farms are generated 1,414.55 MW electricity. The year 2010 electricity general total installed capacity in Turkey is about 49,524.1 MW. According to the total installed capacity, thermal power plants have 65.18%, hydro power plants have 31.97%, geothermal power plants and wind farms have 2.85%. Electricity generation generally was obtained from 15 thermal power plants. In this study high temperature geothermal fields and windparks/windfarms in Turkey which are suitable for electricity generation potential were investigated. 展开更多

In particular, building an integrated wind power generation system by installing a wind power generator inside a building is an attractive method to secure safe energy. However, most studies have dealt with the efficiency of wind turbines and the response effects of wind induced vibration; space preparation for wind turbine installations has not been sufficiently considered. This work reviewed the shapes of openings where wind turbines can be installed in skyscrapers, and the characteristics of wind induced vibration responses occurring in the building with changes in cross sectional area. Nine wind power models were constructed to carry out the experiment. According to the experimental results, wind speed varies with shape of opening in the order of C-type>S-type>R-type. Moreover, wind speed increases as the area is reduced. 展开更多
