One is high indoor air temperature, for this reason the indoor climate is far beyond the thermal comfort standard; the other is the inhomogeneons temperature distribution of the inner wall surfaces, and high temperature of the inner surface of the roof causes much scorching to the head of occupant. This is the characteristic of such rooms. Both features mentioned above should be considered comprehensively for the evaluation of indoor thermal environment of the top-floor rooms with asymmetric radiant field. In order to characterize the indoor thermal environment of the rooms, the heat stress index, HSI and radiant heat flux reaching human head, Q_R should be introduced simultaneously as thermal indexes for the indoor climate evaluation. The flow field in the tip region of fan is measured using a PDA (Particle Dynamics Analysis) system. The flow is surveyed across the whole passage at fifteen axial locations (from the 100% axial chord in front of the leading edge to the 100% axial chord behind the trailing edge), mainly focusing on the outer 90% blade span. Both experiment measurement and numerical simulation indicates the leakage flow originated from the tip clearance along the chord rolls up into three dimensional spiral structure to form leakage flow vortex. The interaction of leakage flow and main flow will produce the low velocity zone, and block the flow. The leakage flow almost occupies the most part of flow passage behind the trailing edge.展开更多

Simultaneous pressure measurements were made on its entire ellipsoidal roof in a simulated suburban boundary layer flow field. Special attention is paid to the charaeteristics of fluctuating wind pressures in different zones on the roof. Some selected results are presented: 1) correlations between fluctuating wind pressures on both roof surfaces, 2) eigenvalues and eigenvectors of covariance matrices of the fluctuating wind pressures, 3) probability distributions of the fluctuating wind pressures, and 4) statistical characteristics of peak factor. Furthermore, the applicability of the quasi-steady approach is discussed in detail. Based on the results, an empirical formula for estimating the minimum pressure coefficients, using a peak factor approach, is presented. Comparison of the minimum pressure coefficients determined by the proposed formula and those obtained from the wind tunnel tests is made to examine the applicability and accuracy of the proposed formula.展开更多

Gable, troughed and mono-sloped roofs were tested. The roof models were made of 0.5 mm thick perforated duralumin plates, the porosity of which was changed from 0 to about 0.4. Overall aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the roof model were measured in a turbulent boundary layer with a six-component force balance for various wind directions. The results indicate that the wind loads on canopy roofs generally decrease with an increase in porosity of the roof. Assuming that the roof is rigid and supported by the four corner columns with no walls, the axial forces induced in the columns are regarded as the most important load effect for discussing the design wind loads. Two loading patterns causing the maximum tension and compression in the columns are considered. Based on a combination of the lift and moment coefficients, the design wind force coefficients on the windward and leeward halves of the roof are presented for the two loading patterns as a function of the roof pitch and porosity. The effect of porosity is taken into account as a reduction factor of the wind loads.展开更多

Inverted domes are popular as foundations. Structures are built with an intended end use for a specified utility period. The functional requirement is to serve the purpose and the structural requirement constitutes stability, strength, safety, serviceability and durability. Satisfaction of these requirements at affordable costs is the goal of structural optimization. This paper demonstrates the need and scope for optimization of domes by formulating and solving the problem by use of calculus (volume of material is the objective function being minimized using first principles of calculus). A simple but elegant method is suggested for determination of wind stresses by statics which compares very well with that obtained by rigorous method.展开更多

Through site visit, theoretical analysis and discrete element calculation, the research shows that, as the mining deepens, underground stress of lower sublevels is more obvious and higher than that of upper sublevels and is higher in the air return roadway than that in the air intake roadway in the area that is near to the top coal. Because the top coal is thick and gangue is caved above the support, underground pressure to the working face is relatively gentle. Immediate roof will mainly fall down along the floor. Main roof and the rock bed above the main roof will move to the mined out area along the fault in the early stage and then fall down with the mined out area later. In addition, roof pressure mainly periodically appears in two directions along the trend and the dip.展开更多

This paper adopted both quantitative and qualitative research approach to seek information from, landlords, and manufacturers of asbestos cement products, parliament and other Government Agencies. Data was obtained through questionnaire, interview and field work survey. In all, a total of 20 questionnaires were distributed. The research emerged that about 1200 housing units roofed with asbestos cement roofing sheet were constructed by the state owned construction company between 1976 and 2000 in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis (about 12,000 nationwide), a period when the risk of asbestos was known in Ghana. The study in the newly developing areas in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis indicated that, out of every 100 housing unit being built, at least 40 of these were roofed with asbestos cement corrugated roofing sheet. It was also emerged from this research that there were no laws prohibiting the use, manufacturing or importation of asbestos products in Ghana. And this exposes maintenance workers in the building construction industries to the risk of asbestos related diseases. The research recommended that those who have asbestos materials present in their premises should take action to manage the risk so that no one will unknowingly disturb it and also provide information about the material to those who are likely to disturb it.展开更多

(hyperbolic paraboloid) free roof has been investigated on the basis of a wind tunnel experiment. The roof models of 1 mm thickness were made of nylon resin using laser lithography. The parameters under consideration are the rise to span ratio and slope of the roof. The overall aerodynamic forces and moments were measured by a six-component force balance in a turbulent boundary layer. Based on a combination of the lift and moment coefficients, the design wind force coefficients, CNW^* and CNL^*, on the windward and leeward halves of the roof are proposed. Focus is on the column axial forces induced by wind loading as the load effect for discussing the design wind loads, assuming that the roof is rigid and supported by four comer columns. Indeed, two pairs of CNW^* and CNL^*, generating the maximum tension and compression in the columns, are provided for each of the two or three wind directions parallel to the roof's diagonal lines. The proposed values of the wind force coefficients are compared with the specified values in the Australia/New-Zealand Standard for a limited range of rise to span ratio.展开更多

Incorporating the formation mechanism of wind pressure pulse events, the peak over threshold method was employed to study properties of this kind of events. The event duration time, the energy contribution, the number of the pulse events, and the distribution of average peak pressure were calculated. Probability density functions of some typical samples in separation region were also given. Results show that the non-Gaussian roof pressure is strong in the flow separation region owing to the wind pressure pulse events. Evaluations of the extreme peak pressures, which can be determined by the peak over threshold method effectively, are important to the design of building cladding.展开更多
