Since the turn of the century, however, other aspects have entered the debate, such as improving food quality, changing eating habits and avoiding food waste. The latter topic has become the subject of attention for the past I0 years and the interest in it has steadily grown. This paper focuses on food waste within the overall context. Apart from the purely quantitative (material) aspects, it draws our attention to the immaterial side of waste, which has to do with our value system. It hopes to sharpen our minds towards a responsible way of dealing with resources展开更多

On the one hand, water was considered as an indispensable necessity for human life and, on the other, it acquired a symbolic value, whose manifestations are equally palpable. As an example, there can be brought up the setting up of public fountains in the towns of late Middle Ages. They were essential not only for the daily water provision for the citizens but also meant to honor and pomp the city. Similar double meaning can be also found in the functioning of the medieval fisheries as their economic activity guaranteed food supply and even managed to acquire religious and symbolic implications in the Christian society.展开更多

For doing so, a two-stage least-squares model was used. It encompassed instrumental variables that attempt to describe the effective determinants of firm's vertical integration willingness. Results based on data concerning a set of 130 food-manufacturing firms, highlighted that vertical integration of a firm is strongly affected by internal incentives such as innovation rate and firm size. Moreover, it is simultaneously influenced by the economies of scale and some structure incentives. To conclude, results indicate globally that important and statistically significant differences exist across the studied firms and the small effective ones which acquire a high level of vertical integration.展开更多

The human factors that emit large amount of green house gases include industrialization, burning of fossil fuel and gas flaring. Increase in air temperature and consequent increase in the rates of evaporation also affect the level of food supply. Data for this study were collected from primary and secondary sources. Primary source were collected through field investigation and structured questionnaire. A total of 450 questionnaires were administered. Results revealed that varieties of crops ranging from tree crops to cereals were cultivated within the study area. The effect of climate change on food supply has resulted into change in crop yields, change in rainfall pattern, soil loss and has greatly affected planting period and harvesting. The study therefore recommended awareness campaigns on the causes and consequences of global climate change on food production, environmental education and afforestation campaign programmes on sustainable food supply and environmental safety must be intensified.展开更多

Support the European Agro-food industry to be a worldwide leader in the supply of high quality and safe food products. The relevance of agro-food industry is not only related to its importance in European economy but also is consequence of increase awareness concerning to the necessity of producing high quality and safe products. The implementation of the new technologies in agro-food domain, enabling adequate combination of traditional products and modern management processes will definitively contribute to produce high quality and safe products. Increase the level of involvement of consumers in the agro-food value chain by means of the wide adoption of relevant IC Technologies and applications. The agro-food sector is very much a consumer driven sector. However, in order to realise the full participation of citizens in the whole agro-food supply chain, further developments in ICTs are required. The incorporation of ICT tools will greatly contribute to achieving a deeper integration, communication and information flow between the different stakeholders in the supply chain, from "fork to farm", from farmers to consumers. Therefore, in first place the objective of the work is to analyze the opportunities offered by the ICT to implement the systems of traceability in the food system. In according to place the study wants to deepen the norm ISO22000, in which the ICT has a fundamental role to have a synthetic tool of guarantee and greater trust for the consumer. The purpose is to make a critical review of the existing literature on this matter in relationship to the agro-food systems.展开更多

However, this development relates to natural resources depletion and deterioration of quality of life in rural population, especially in smallholder farmers. Thailand has practiced the New Theory Agriculture (NTA), one application aligned with sufficient economy. This theory not only remedies damaged natural resources but also helps smallholder farmers to improve quality of life; and it is analogous to local food supply chain theory, that is well-known in western countries. However, NTA has not been measured its sustainability. Following sustainable food criteria and sustainable agriculture criteria, this paper uses an Indicator of Sustainable Agricultural Practice (ISAP) to measure sustainability at farm level of small rural community's network called Inpaeng, a case study that has practiced NTA. The result of assessment in this case implies that NTA yields sustainability to local food supply chain more than monocrop system.展开更多

However, majorities of Japanese are feeling anxiety about the future food supply because Japan's food self-sufficiency ratio has fallen most rapidly in the last 45 years, and is lowest amongst countries with a population of more than 100 million. Major causes and mechanisms of the decline in the food self-sufficiency ratio over the last 45 years were analyzed. Drastic changes of dietary habits under rapid economic growth and sharp appreciation of the yen against the US dollar were found to be the major causes of the sharp decline of the food self-sufficiency ratio. Preliminary projections about the food self-sufficiency ratio in 2015 were carried out, and it was found that it will not be easy to achieve the policy goal of raising the food self-sufficiency ratio to 45% by 2015.展开更多

In particular, it examines the economic and mental satisfaction in the decision-making and in the negotiation processes for efficient food supply. It is examined primarily as transparency in addition to Harvard concept at annual meetings (or between the year) favoring a satisfactory result for both negotiators. In a structural equation model, the Harvard negotiating points are brought with transparency in communication and this in terms of economic success experiences and the sociomental satisfaction.展开更多

This process did not avoid food production and processing. Thanks to rapid development of technology, there has been a development of conventional food production, as well as appearance of genetically modified food. As a consequence of this trend, as well as the concern among some part of human population for their health, we had the return to natural food production in the form of the development of organic food production. One of the characteristics of organic food market in the European Union is the constant growth of demand for this product group, and insufficient quantities of organic products available in this market. These information led to the conclusion that organic food represents an opportunity for less developed countries, i.e., that countries like Serbia can manufacture and sale these products on the market with the highest purchasing power in the world--the European Union market. In this paper, the characteristics of demand for organic foods in the European Union were presented, then it was explained in detail why are these products export chance of Serbia, as well as reasons why is the export of organic food from Serbia to the EU very low at the time being. At the end, some recommendations that could help Serbia to increase export of organic product to EU countries were proposed.展开更多
