In humans and labor atory animals, the plasticity of metabolic function in foetuses or neonates enab les them to adapt to malnutrition for survival; however, such an adaptation, as usually evidenced by retarded growth, stunted development of lymphoid organs and impaired immunocompetence, can maintain and persist into later life even when n utrition is improved. Early nutrition may thus programme' the immune system of a nimals. Limited experimental studies have also revealed that long-term immunity against nematode parasites in sheep can be enhanced by a short-term protein su pplementation shortly after weaning, a form of 'nutritional programming', but su ch an effect appears to vanish if the nutritional status of young animals alread y meets at least the requirement for maintenance.展开更多

Concentrates were offered at rate of 3% of live body weight with free choice of barley straw. Results revealed that higher (P 〈 0.05) digestible dry matter (DDM) and digestible organic matter (DOM) intakes were achieved due to feeding medium level of CP and to the addition of SC. Addition of SC improved (P 〈 0.05) gain, lambs fed medium and high levels gained higher (P 〈 0.05) than those fed the low level of dietary CP. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) based on DM and organic matter (OM) intakes was not significantly affected by level of dietary CP or addition of yeast. Even though, less amount of N required per unit of gain was achieved with low and medium as compared to high levels. Higher DM, nitrogen free extract (NFE) and hemicellulose (P 〈 0.05), OM, CP, crude fiber (CF) and cellulose (P 〈 0.01) digestibilities were achieved in lambs fed the medium level of CP, whereas, no significant effect was observed on ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) digestibilities. Results also revealed that digestibility of almost all nutrients was improved with different extent due to addition of SC. Effect of interaction between levels of dietary CP and addition of SC referred to the preferability of addition of SC with medium level of dietary protein.展开更多

In High Bassin zone of Mandrare in Southern Madagascar, sampling area of 400 m^2 has been monitored to analysis floristic diversity and Shannon-Weaver index and to establish rangeland typology. With one ram, two castrated goats and three ewes, foraging behaviour, bite rate and forage nutritive value were analyzed in native pastureland during six days at two browsing periods. As results, four pastureland groups were classified with dominant shrubs plants Acacia farnesiana, Poupartia caffra, Kigelianthe madagascariensis and Rhigozum madagascariense. Rangelands sites have presented lower heterogeneity with floristic density (236-658 plants per hectare), Shannon-Weaver index (0.28-0.95), maximum diversity (1.04 ± 0.07) with P 〈 0.05. Most of 42 identified fodder plants presented significant difference (P 〈 0.05) and higher nutritive value (35-54% Dry Matter or DM); mineral matter (70-162 g·kg DM^-1); Crude Protein (124-175 g·kg DM^-1); Crude Fibre (203-376 g·kg DM^-1); Neutral Detergent Fiber (388-548 g·kg DM^-1) and gross energy (3617-4464 kcal·kg DM^-1). Acaciafarnesiana rangeland was overgrazed with 4.00 to 9.00 bites·mn^-1. In fact, relationships between phytosociology, nutritional parameters and foraging behaviour have been analyzed to improve with autochthonous plants and to manage rangeland in semi arid environment.展开更多

This phenomenon had reduced the effectiveness of anthelmintics which based on drugs. This situation has led to the scientific study on natural anthelmintic that based on traditional usage of local plants. In this study, local plant named Ketapang (Terminalia catappa) that traditionally used to treat helminth infection was chose as experimental plant. Eighteen mix Katjang goats were equally divided into three groups, where two groups were treated with mature and immature T. catappa leaves respectively, while the third group was untreated. Leaves were daily feeding in raw to the goats for four weeks. Normal goat's pellet was fed to the goats according to scheduled time-feediing; morning and afternoon, and water was given ad libitum. Fecal samples were collected every two days during the experimental period and subjected to modified Mc Master fecal egg count. Results for this short-term preliminary anthelmintic trial had showed significant percentage of helminth eggs reduction in goats. The reduction in goats treated with mature leaves was at 72% and 63% for the goats treated with immature leaves. Control goats did not showed significant reduction in terms of the parasite worm eggs. In conclusion, the ethnoveterinary data about this local plant was scientifically proven and can be widely promoted to the local livestock's owner as an alternative approach for parasitic helminths control in goats.展开更多

Moreover, the paper deals with analysis of their nutritional value in terms of animal feeding. This paper has drawn on two field experiments set up and carried out between 2010 and 2013 by the Research Centre for Cultivar Testing in Slupia Wielka. The experiment was conducted in two experimental stations: one in the Research Centre for Cultivar Testing in Krzyzewo and the other in the Experimental Stations for Variety Testing in Uhinin, being a branch of the Research Centre for Cultivar Testing in Cicibor Duzy. The experiment was arranged and conducted according to COBORU guidelines. The experimental plots were sown with varieties of Dactylis glornerata: Niva, Tukan, Amila, Crown Royale and with varieties of Festuca pratensis: Limosa, Pasja, Anturka, Amelka (d. AND 1009). In the experimental plots with the varieties of Dactylis glornerata the grass was harvested six times a year and chemical analysis of the biomass was done taking dry matter only from five cuts. The varieties of Festuca pratensis were harvested four times. The RFV (relative feed value) was determined using the Linn and Martin method. Linn and Martin's test proved that Festuca pratensis had better nutritional value than Dactylis glomerata. For Dactylis glomerata, no matter what the variety and location was, the relative feed value ranged from 125 to 151, which puts that grass species in II quality class, good enough to feed high production dairy cows and heirs selected for replacements. The analysis of the relative feed value proved that no matter from which cut, the biomass ofDactylis glornerata belonged in Ill quality class, (RFV between 103 and 124) and it can be used to feed good beef cattle, older heifers and, in small quantities, dairy cows.展开更多

This study was done to examine the effect of addition of Gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) leaf or rice bran on feed intake, feed digestibility and liveweight gain of Kacang goat given Mulato (Brachiaria mulato) grass. Twenty four male Kacang goat, approximately 13.4±0.6 kg in initial weight and 10 months of age, were housed in individual metabolic pen and allocated to one of three dietary treatments. The experimental design was a completely randomized block design, with three treatments and eight replicates (goats). The treatments were Mulato grass ad libitum (M), Mulato + Gliricidia (1% weight/d on dry matter basis) (MG), and Mulato + rice bran (1% weight/d on dry matter basis) (MR). The experiment was run for eight weeks period (two weeks for adaptation and and six weeks for measurement period, respectively). Parameters measured were liveweight gain (LWG), dry matter intake (DMI) and dry matter digestibility (DMD). The result showed that dietary treatment significantly (P 〈 0.05) affected the LWG, DMI and DMD of Kacang goat. Goat given Mulato grass had the lowest LWG, DMI and DMD with value 58 g/d, 2.77% weight/d and 57.61%, respectively. Goat received Mulato + Gliricidia and Mulato + rice bran had a significant higher LWG (73 g/d and 76 g/d, respectively), DMI (3.25% weight/d and 3.65% weight/d, respectively) and DMD (62.28% and 63.19%, respectively). However, no significant difference (P 〉 0.05) between goat received Mulato + Gliricidia and Mulato + rice bran. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that protein or energy contents of the diet influenced growth, feed intake and digestibility of Kacang goat.展开更多
