No Dream, No Future： A Study on Aesthetic Dimensions of＂Chinese Dream＂ and the Task of Literary Critics

This article believes that ＂Chinese Dream＂ has three dimensions： First, ＂Chinese Dream＂ is the inevitable demands of Chinese reconstruction and it is the deepest desire of Chinese nation since the Chinese modern history. Second, the modernism of socialism with Chinese feature is the process of Chinese modernism. Third, the third theoretical dimension, 1 believe, is the ideal of socialism. I would like to take the film ＂Lost＂ and ＂Peking Monk＂ as examples and analyze the specific form of expression. This article is going to indicate in the end that ＂the revolution of aesthetics＂ and the assignments of critics, which can be recognized as the intuitive ability, could merge the historical affair and the human nature, which literature comprise, together and deliver deeper analyses and appraise The mission of critics is not only to distinctly emerge the aesthetic form of the literal works, but also analyze and seize the ＂aesthetic form＂ of them, that is to say, their mission is to find the aesthetic meanings of aesthetic expression from commonage in order to achieve the goal of leading and stimulating people ensuing the consciousness and liberation of culture. That is the most important mission and responsibility of Marxist literal criticism and literal critics. This is a rather tough task and refers to the new understanding and attitude to the relative questions of literature and culture. In the eyes of some self-complacent intellectuals, the responsibility for literature and critics is the ＂aesthetic entertainment＂ and ＂spiritual redemption＂. The significance of Marxist Aesthetics lies in that it upgrades the general ＂literal principle＂ and ＂aesthetic principle＂ in to a level of social development and national deliverance, and also it regards whether the literature having the function of cultural libration as the more pivotal content. The assignment for the critics and litterateurs is to engage and promote the production and promulgate for this significance, the cultural consciousness and liberation.

Four Dimensions to Construct China＇s Modem Discourse of Aesthetics Based on China＇s Aesthetic Development in 20th Century

Contemporary Chinese scholars proposed that China should construct modem Chinese aesthetic discourse system, therefore, we should attach great importance to China＇s own aesthetic development in 20th century and learn experience from it. There are four dimensions of learning. First, we should seek the origin of methods from Marxism. Second, the study should deeply rooted in Chinese traditional culture. Third, we should refer to ancient and modem Western aesthetic theories. Last but not the least, all the scholars should be encouraged to express their views freely and equally. The four dimensions, which plays an important role in constructing China＇s modem discourse of aesthetics, derived from the conclusion and experience of China＇s modem aesthetic development in 20th century.

On the Relationship between Language and Culture

The so-called culture refers to the tradition and style of a nation to be gradually formed in the historical development process. Language is an important reflection to culture. In fact, all sorts of views about the relationship between language and culture have been proposed in the academic circles, which are varied greatly and unable to agree with each other. On The Ironies In What Is To Be Done

What is to be done, as Mavis Gallant＇s only literary work for the stage, has received little critical attention since publication, compared to the increasingly voluminous interest in her 119 short stories that have firmly established her literary reputation. This article focuses on how the Canadian writer masterfully manipulates the literary techniques of light humorous but thought-provoking ironies and satires in her play to expose the fallacies and absurdities of the incongruous Marxist ideologies in real life and practice, and to reveal the political and personal conflicts and dilemmas of Canadians towards the end of the war. It concludes that Gallant is perhaps suggesting that only by eradicating communism, the root of all personal dilemmas for the characters in the play, can they eliminate all the absurdidities and incongruencies from their real lives.

The Construction of a Discourse System for Literature Research in Contemporary China

The construction of the literature research discourse in the seven decades since the foundation of the PRC has shown an upward spiral, from 'state/collective discourse' to 'society/individual discourse' and thence to 'world/human discourse.' These related but different discourses have worked together to facilitate literary writing and literature research. During the last 70 years of literature research, the Marxist theory of literature and art has always played a guiding role. Having close links with Chinese literary practice, Marxist theory has had a fundamental impact on the construction of the Chinese literature research discourse system. The emergence of 'state/collective discourse,' 'society/individual discourse' and 'world/human discourse' is an integral, historical, logical and dynamic process. Chinese literature research discourse should be constantly innovated and developed with a vision that looks to the world and the future, in order to contribute Chinese wisdom to dialogues between different academic discourses in the world and thus demonstrate the unique value of Chinese academic research in the humanities.

A Twofold Perspective on Research on Marx and Engels' Classic Texts

Study of the classic texts of Marx and Engels should employ two perspectives： Marxist philosophical history and Marxist philosophical principles. The two cannot be separated, still less contradictory. In dealing creatively with these classic works, we must firmly uphold the methodology of historical materialism, read them in accordance with the authors＇ original intentions and approach them creatively. We need to oppose research styles that place undue emphasis on the researcher＇s own interpretations and constructions. Research on Marxist philosophy should develop on the basis of respect, study and correct understanding of Marx and Engels＇ classic works; different readings of these texts must not be allowed to construct a pluralist Marxism. This is of great importance for consolidating the leading position of Marxism in the sphere of ideology.

The Eternal ＂May Fourth Movement＂： Between Enlightenment and Tradition

This paper mainly discusses two key issues： how to evaluate the New Culture Movement and how to understand the relationship between enlightenment and the New Culture Movement. With regard to the former, the author puts forward the basic principles to be established for the evaluation of the New Culture Movement： not only to respect the historical facts, but also take a broad view to make a comprehensive survey of history and the world. Through an analysis of the current situation at home and abroad, this paper argues that it is precisely because the New Cul~＇e Movement rejected the darkness in the fields of politics, morality, academics and ideology which had ruled China for thousands of years, promoted insemination of political democracy, freedom of thought, and spiritual independence, which helped to prepare the mass basis for Marxism to spread in China, that it became possible to achieve the victory of socialism in China. Regarding the latter, the author believes the New Culture Movement could not complete the task of enlightenment once and for all in China. The reasons are as follows： China has thousands of years of old culture and old traditions, the Chinese culture and the European traditions are quite different, and the situation confronting China during the New Culture Movement period was far more complicated than the situation during the European Enlightenment in the 16th-18th centuries. So, when it was divorced from the future fate of the Chinese nation, the empty talk of personality liberation and personal freedom was not only unrealistic, but also poled apart from the rationalist analysis and application advocated by the Enlightenment.

The Return of Confucianism in China： Legitimacy and the Rule of the Communist Party of China

In countries with long histories, traditional culture plays an essential role in shaping social norms and influencing contemporary development. Confucianism, one of the world＇s oldest philosophies, justified the legitimacy of imperial China for about two thousand years but was attacked from the late Qing to the end of the Cultural Revolution. Ever since Deng Xiao-ping＇s economic reform, the Communist Party of China＇s legitimacy has been undermined, so the CPC has been facing a legitimacy crisis. The New Confucianism Movement has encouraged many scholars and officials to integrate a Sinolized Marxism and Confucianism dynamic for the CPC to employ as a legitimacy tool. This paper argues that Confucianism can help the CPC relegitimize its rule in China by using nationalism to strengthen traditional legitimacy and political, economic, and diplomatic development to increase its performance legitimacy.
