A new method is presented for silo classification using the rupture plane in the storage. The proposed method is based on the formula of rupture plane orientation determined by the aspect ratio of specified silos and involves the effects of the conical angle of the storage surface, so it can deal with two cases: the conical angle of the storage surface and the flat storage surface. Compared with the two popular methods based on the silo-aspect ratio and the silo rupture plane, respectively, in current engineering design, the new method can give a range of critical aspect ratios to classify deep silos and squat silos according to the conical angle of the storage surface or the fiat storage surface. Moreover, the range covers the critical aspect ratios obtained from the existing classification methods including the Chinese code based on silo aspect ratios, the German code, Reimbert brothers' definition and Liang et al. 's definition, so it is a more general method to classify silos and the existing methods can be viewed as special cases of the presented method. 展开更多

Residual coal pillars play an important role in mining the adjacent coal seam safely, managing the gobs and maintaining the stability of abandoned coal mines. The height to diameter ratio(H/D)affects the stability of residual coal pillars. In this study, uniaxial compressive tests of coal specimens with five H/D(2.0,1.5,1.0,0.8 and 0.6)were performed, and the stress, strain and acoustic emission(AE)were monitored. Results show that the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)and peak strain increase with H/D decreasing. An empirical equation is proposed to calculate the UCS based on the H/D.The AE activities during coal failure process can be separated into four periods. The span of quiet period and rapid decline period shorten with H/D decreasing. The smaller the H/D is,the more complicated the failure characteristics of coal will be.The failure form of coal with H/D of 2.0,1.5,and 1.0 is primarily shear failure, while splitting failure along the axial direction is the mainly mode when H/D is 0.8 or 0.6.The initiation, expansion, aggregation and connection of micro-cracks can be reflected by the real-time spatial evolution of AE event points. 展开更多

Friction stir welding (FSW) of 6061 aluminium alloy butt joint was carried out at each rotation speed of 600, 800, 1000, 1200 r/min for two different travel speeds, 80 and 100 mm/min, at a constant probe depth of 1.85 mm. The calculated energy input based on the FSW parameters studied shows that the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the butt joint is obtained within a certain range of energy input of 297 kJ to 354 kJ out of total range of energy input studied from 196 kJ to 405 kJ. The fatigue behaviors of high-strength and low-strength joints performed at different stress ratios, i.e., 0.5, 0.3, 0.1, -0.3, -0.5, indicate that the fatigue behaviors of both the welds are sensitive to the microstructural features, such as stir zone (SZ), thermo mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ). The observed fatigue strengths were discussed in terms of the microstructure, crack path behavior and fracture surface. 展开更多

The dynamic theory of die swell deduced in a previous paper was extensively applied to study the extrudate swelling behaviors of two entangled polymeric liquids (HDPE and PBD) in a simple shear flow at steady shear stress. The mechanism and dynamics for the recoils and the recoveries of viscoelastic strains in the extrudate were investigated under the free recovery and dynamic states. It was found that in the course of recovery the free recoil and the growth of die swell in the extrudate may be divided into two recovery regions (instantaneous and delayed regions) and three growth stages (instantaneous, delayed, and ultimate extrudate swelling stages). The free recoil and the extrudate swelling behaviors may be expressed as a function of shear stress. The correlations of instantaneous, delayed, total and ultimate extrudate swell effects to the molecular parameters and the operational variables in the simple shear flow at steady shear stress were derived from the dynamic theory of die swell. Also, two sets of new universal equations on the total extrudate swelling effect (TESE) and ultimate extrudate swelling effect (UESE) were deduced. The first is the universal equation of the logarithmic correlation between the TESE and the growth time under the free and dynamic states; the second is the universal equation of the logarithmic correlation between the UESE and the operational variables under the free and equilibrium states. The first equation was verified by experimental data of PBD with different molecular weights at different operational variables. The second equation was verified by experimental data of HDPE at two temperatures and different operational variables. An excellent agreement result was obtained. The excellent agreement shows that the two universal equations can be used directly to predict the correlations of the TESE and UESE to the growth time, the molecular parameters, and the operational variables under the dynamic and equilibrium states. 展开更多
