A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) rain gauge is proposed in this paper to achieve high precision rainfall measurement. One core sensitive FBG, a temperature compensation FBG and a mechanical transition system construct this novel FBG rain gauge. Sensing principle of this FBG rain gauge is explained in detail, and its theoretical calculation model is also established, which shows that the relationship between center wavelength of sensitive FBG and external rainfall has very good linearity. To verify its detection performance, the calibration experiment on one prototype of this FBG rain gauge is carried out. After experiment data analysis, the detection precision of this FBG rain gauge is 15.4/.tm which is almost two orders of magnitude higher than that of the existing rainfall measurement device. The experimental data confirm that this FBG rain gauge can achieve rainfall measurement with high precision. 展开更多

In this paper we design a new kind of sinc-sampled fiber Bragg grating which is fabricated in high birefringence fiber (HBF). The sampled grating has two sets of reflection spectra along two perpendicular polarization directions. The grating's channel number can be doubled approximately by designing the refractive index difference between the fast and slow axes of the fiber, which enhances the utilization ratio and reduces the claim for photosensitivity of the fiber. The group delay characteristics are theoretically studied and side-lobes are depressed by apodization as well to get the optimized spectra. The results show that the comb-like spectra of the grating have promising applications in both multi-wavelength polarized fiber lasers and fiber sensing networks. 展开更多

The fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technology was used to monitor the situation of a crevice of the continuous beam joint and rails near rail expansion devices on a viaduct of the urban railway. The monitoring items consisted of the rail temperature, rail displacement, viaduct beam displacement, and strain of sliding rail in the rail expansion device section. The strain sensor was a prefabricate FBG strain gauge, the displacement sensor with different scales used an FBG stress ring, and the FBG of the temperature sensor was pre-drawn and fixed in a metal tube. Compensation sensors were used to balance environmental temperature changes. All FBGs were suspended adhered, therefore the chirped phenomenon of the FBG reflection peak was avoided, and the measurement accuracy was improved. The monitoring results matched to the manual test and theoretical estimation. 展开更多

Fiber Optic Interrogation Systems for Hypervelocity and Low Velocity Impact Studies

The aim of this project was to develop non-contact fiber optic based displacement sensors to operate in the harsh environment of a "light gas gun" (LGG), which can "fire" small particles at velocities ranging from 1 km/s-8.4km/s. The LGG is used extensively for research in aerospace to analyze the effects of high speed impacts on materials. Ideally the measurement should be made close to the center of the impact to minimize corruption of the data from edge effects and survive the impact. We chose to develop a non-contact "pseudo" confocal intensity sensor, which demonstrated resolution comparable with conventional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensors combined with high survivability and low cost. A second sensor was developed based on "fiber Bragg gratings" (FBG) to enable a more detailed analysis of the effects of the impact, although requiring contact with the target the low weight and very small contact area of the FBG had minimal effect on the dynamics of the target. The FBG was mounted either on the surface of the target or tangentially between a fixed location. The output signals from the FBG were interrogated in time by a new method. Measurements were made on carbon fiber composite plates in the LGG and on low velocity impact tests. The particle momentum for the low velocity impact tests was chosen to be similar to that of the particles used in the LGG. 展开更多
