[Method] A new statistical algorithm was introduced for daytime air temperature (Ta) retrievals over east China by using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data, and the high temperature monitoring for rice in south China in 2007 summer was used to demonstrate. [Result] High temperature plays a key role in rice production during rice heading stage in summer in southern China. Using MODIS data to monitor the hot damage of high temperature is a feasible way to relieve agricultural disasters. [Conclusion] The result of this study provided a method to monitor hot damage of high temperature tn rice in summer of China.展开更多

Studies were conducted to determine the realized response in salt tolerance of some selected progeny (F3) through one cycle of screening and selection and the extent of variability for salt tolerance among selected progeny (F3) of wheat. All the selected progeny (F3) derived from (F2) populations after exposure are to high salinity level, were tested for salt tolerance during all growth stages in sand cultures salinized with 0, 100, 175 mM NaCI as compared with the unselected progeny (F2). Results showed that the selected progeny (F3) were in all cases except one, superior in yield at maturity and in most cases significantly so, both at 100 and 175 mM NaCl, to the yield of the unselected progeny (F2) controls. In this study, some selected progeny exhibited more than twice the seed yield compared with that obtained from unselected progeny at 175 mM NaCl, and their seed yield was also significantly higher than that at 0 mM NaCl. Results also indicated that the highest value percentage of realized response in salt tolerance was in (F3AS1) and (F3AS2) at 175 mM NaCI. It is important to bear in mind that the significant improvement in selected progeny was achieved just in a single cycle of selection. There is then a strong possibility that further increases in tolerance may be obtained through further cycles of selection till reaching F6 or F7 where would show genetics stability.展开更多

The sediment sample was incubated with an initial concentration of DBP of 100 mg/L for 5 d. The biodegradation rate of DBP was detected using HPLC and the degraded products were analyzed by GC/MS. Subsequently, the microbial diversity of the enrichment culture was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The results reveal that almost 100% of DBP is degraded after merely 3 d,generating two main degraded products:mono-butyl phthalate (MBP) and 9-octadecenoic acid. After a six-month enrichment period under the pressure of DBP,the dominant family in the final enrichment culture is clustered with the Comamonas sp.,the remaining are affiliated with Sphingomonas sp.,Hydrogenophaga sp.,Rhizobium sp.,and Acidovorax sp. The results show the potential of these bacteria to be used in the bioremediation of DBP in the environment.展开更多

However, it is impossible to reflect the users' various needs in the conceptual design stage for high-density housing because of the economic, industrial and time constrains. In response to this challenge, this research paper outlines a different high-density housing design approach that can adopt users' individual customization in the conceptual design stage during the housing design practice. Hence, the design process would be an open-ended evolutionary and transparent process rather than deterministic executions as we have now in most high-density cities, such as Hong Kong. In order to overcome the deficiency in addressing future uncertainties of different users and address the issues of one-off developments without iterating users' feedback in the housing practice, this essay proposes IOSDA (integrated open source design for architecture) for the design practice of high-density housing, through collective data and parametric connectivity between users and architects. IOSDA reflects a different design attitude towards the future, i.e., to shift from architects' heroic prediction of the future to collective engagement of the present with more robust capacities for new possibilities.展开更多
