Because of the massive loads these vehicles carry, dealing with weld reinforcement on TIG joints represents an important issue in their manufacturing and strength evaluation. Experimental and numerical simulation methods were used to investigate the effects of weld toe shape and weld toe position on the tensile behavior and mechanical properties of these joints. The simulation results indicated that the relative difference in elongation could be as large as 96.9% caused by the difference in weld toe shape. The joints with weld toes located in the weld metal or in the partially melted zone (PMZ) exhibited larger elongation than joints with weld toes located at the juncture of the weld metal and the PMZ.展开更多

The powder was consolidated by hot extrusion method. The microstructures of the milled powder and bulk alloy were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Mechanical properties of the extruded alloy were examined by mechanical testing machine. The results show that after BM, the particle size and microstructures of the mixed alloy powder change obviously. After 48 h BM, the average size of mixed powder is about 30 nm, and then after hot extrusion, the average size of grains reaches about 70 rim. The compressive strength of the extruded alloy reaches 710 MPa under certain conditions of milling time and composition. As a result of the identification of the nano-/micro-strueture-property relationship of the samples, such high strength is attributed mainly to the nanocrystalline grains of a(Al) and nanoscaled FeNiCrCoAl3 particles, and the fine secondary phase of Al2Cu and Fe-rich phases.展开更多

The results indicate that fine alumina particles are uniformly distributed in the copper matrix, while a few coarse ones are distributed on the grain boundaries. Tensile tests results show that Hall-Petch mechanism is the main contribution to the yield strength of ADSC alloy at room temperature. Its high temperature strength is attributed to the strong pinning effects of alumina particles on the grain and sub-grain boundaries with dislocations. The ultimate tensile strength can reach 237 MPa and the corresponding yield strength reaches 226 MPa at 700℃. Tensile fracture morphology indicates that the ADSC alloy shows brittleness at elevated temperatures. Creep tests results demonstrate that the steady state creep rates at 400 ℃ are lower than those at 700 ℃. The stress exponents at 400 ℃ and 700℃ are 7 and 5, respectively, and the creep strain rates of the ADSC alloy are controlled by dislocation core diffusion and lattice diffusion.展开更多

For determining the optimal processing parameters of FSW, the microstructure, mechanical properties, and fracture behavior of FSW joints were evaluated. When the processing parameters were optimized with 2000 r/min rotation speed and100 mm/min traverse speed, high quality welds were achieved. The ultimate tensile strength yield strength and elongation of the joint can reach 415 MPa(85% of the base metal strength), 282 MPa, and 9.5%, respectively. The hardness of the joint gradually decreased from the alloy matrix to the heat-affected zone. The lowest strength and hardness appeared near the heat-affected zone because of the over-aging caused by heat flow from repeated stirring during FSW. The average grain size of the stir zone(2.15 μm) was smaller than that of the base metal(4.43 μm) and the heat-affected zone(5.03 μm), whose grains had <110> preferred orientation.展开更多

Their high specific strength was attractive to those applications; however, their little corrosion resistance and low wear endurance became a fatal demerit in practical applications. In order to overcome these issues of high strength aluminum alloys, high density plasma nitriding is proposed as an effective surface treatment for duralumin. This process has a capability to control the RF- and DC-plasmas independently for nitriding. This enables us to temporally control and describe the plasma state by in-situ plasma diagnosis. This plasma diagnosis was instrumented to search for optimum processing condition to plasma nitriding the duralumin alloys of type A2011. Both type A2011 aluminum alloy plates and pipes were employed to describe the inner nitriding behavior for hardening the duralumin alloys by the present plasma nitriding.展开更多
