What Influences Cooperative Motivation of Foreign Brides From Southeast Asian Countries in Taiwan?

Because women in Taiwan have had more and more opportunities to receive higher education and engage in different kinds of work, they have had developed increasingly higher standards for their marriage partners. Men wh... Because women in Taiwan have had more and more opportunities to receive higher education and engage in different kinds of work, they have had developed increasingly higher standards for their marriage partners. Men who are in the lower socioeconomic working classes such as those who work in agriculture, or fishing, or who are disabled can no longer compete in local marriage market. As a result, these men have begun to look for their brides from other countries to continue the family line, do the housework, and take care of their parents-in-law. In addition to the fact that these foreign brides are often young and from rural areas, language barriers and cultural differences make it difficult for them to raise and educate their children in Taiwan. The inability of these brides often leads to a higher percentage of children who are developmentally delayed, have poor pronunciation, behavior problems, and low academic achievement. Governmental agencies and schools recognize these issues and have tried to help foreign-born mothers take better care of their children. However, there are several influential factors that can limit the cooperative motivation of these foreign-born mothers, including language barriers, parenting stresses, low socioeconomic status, and cultural limitations. Therefore, governmental agencies and related professionals must take these factors into consideration to provide comprehensive services and a better learning environment. 展开更多

The challenge then is identifying and selecting materials for each particular class, as well as how to get students motivated and successfully engaged in the process of writing. The study explored that the organizational climate in the universities across the Strait was not ethically high. Yet, the universities in Inland emphasized more on campus restraint in teachers behavior, job performance and their sense of belonging to the school.The study result demonstrated that improving leadership of the universities could enhance teachers identification with their schools and could promote the level of campus across the Strait. 展开更多

With the implementation of the New Curriculum Standard (2017) in senior English, the notions of cultural awareness and culture instruction are being accepted and carried out in EFL (English as Foreign Language) classroom by English teachers. This paper tries to analyze the relationship between language and culture, the contents and goals in teaching foreign language and culture, the significance of teaching culture in foreign language education. This paper concludes with recommendations for improving culture teaching: Learning a foreign language is inseparable from learning its culture; The knowledge of culture differences may help students to make less pragmatic errors and become proficient in cross-cultural communication; Great efforts should also be paid to the development of the student’s cross-cultural awareness, and then the quality of English teaching could be really improved. 展开更多

As institutions of higher education continue to internationalize, the number of exchanged students climbs ever higher in China. It is important to know what they have gained in the intercultural learning experiences in terms of attitudes, awareness, and knowledge, which are the three constructed dimensions of Intercultural Competence in this study. A qualitative research is conducted by using interview and seven English language learners are investigated to explore their learning outcomes in the intercultural learning program. From the thematic analysis of the interviews, it can be found that these English language learners' intercultural competence has been improved during their stay in USA. They successfully overcome cultural shock, hold positive attitudes toward target culture and people, become more confident in English study, and acquire more cultural knowledge. The research outcomes contribute to promoting intercultural learning effectiveness and improving learners' intercultural competence. 展开更多

Based on the fact that The English Teaching Syllabus at Higher Vocational Colleges doesn't mention the development of cultural awareness, the author attempts to select cultural items for students in English teaching at Higher Vocational Colleges. The author concludes the frequency of the common cultural mistakes that Chinese usually make in intercultural communication according to recent materials and documents on intercultural communication. The frequency of the cultural mistakes can be regarded as ' the frequency of cultural items that should appear in cultural teaching'. It has two functions. Firstly, it can be used as a parameter to measure the degree of necessity to choose this cultural item. Secondly, it can be used as a parameter to measure the relative degree of the importance of this cultural item, that is, as a parameter for us to determine that this item is more important than another. Then the author makes a comparison between the communicative functions in the Syllabus and the common cultural mistakes made by Chinese learners of English.
