Clinically, the patients suffer from chronic pulm...Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disease characterised by increased viscosity of mucus secretions and high chloride concentration in exocrine secretions. Clinically, the patients suffer from chronic pulmonary changes, chronic pancreatic deficiency, and an obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. The disease affects all secretory epithelia including the eye. The influence of nutritional status on long-term survival and quality of life of CF patients is well documented. Steatorrhea, a consequence of decreased fat digestion and absorption may be associated with vitamin deficiences, including vitamin A. The aim of this study was to document plasma retinol binding protein (RBP) status, a specific plasma transport protein for vitamin A, and ocular surface changes in children and adolescents with CF. The patients were recruited at the 3rd Department of Paediatric Diseases, Medical University of Bialystok, Poland. All patients were regularly seen by a CF specialist dietitian. A group of 15 patients had the following investigations: plasma RBP, visual acuity, physical examination, tear film break-up time, fluorescein staining and Schirmer tear test. A group of 15 age-and sex-matched controls without CF or ocular pathology were also recruited. Plasma RBPconcentrations were significantly lower in patients with CF than in the control group. CF patients showed a statistically significant increase in the incidence of clinical blepharitis. Five of the CF patients had clinical evidence of dry eyes. Conclusion:Low plasma retinol binding protein levels frequently occur in clinically stable and retinol supplemented cystic fibrosis patients, of whom five had dry eyes. We recommend monitoring of plasma retinol binding protein levels and evaluation of ocular surface changes, especially those with dry eye symptoms in all cystic fibrosis patients.展开更多

The adsorptive capacity of thio-chitosan with 15% apparent degree of crosslinking (DC, mass ration of glutaraldehyde to chitosan) to Cu(Ⅱ) was 160mg/g (dry weight). The adsorption of Cu(Ⅱ) was correlated with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm equation. Cu(Ⅱ) adsorbed on thio-chitosan column ( 1cm×10cm) was eluted with 0.5mol/L H2SO4, 6mol/L HCI and 3% thiourea solution with the recovery of 88.3%, 86.1% and 95.3%, respectively. The thio-chitosan resin can be applied to the separation and recovery of metal ions.展开更多

The curves o...The stress corrosion crack (SCC) susceptibility of ultra-high strength steel AerMet 100 was investigated by slow strain rate technique (SSRT), tensile with polarization and surface analysis technique. The curves of tf^Cl/tf^W -strain rate are divided into three regions: stress-dominated region, SCC-dominated region, and corrosion-dominated region, so as the curves of εf^Cl/εf^W - strain rate and tm/tf-strain rate. The results of tensile tests with polarization show that the main SCC mechanism of AerMet 100 is anodic dissolution, which controls the corrosion process. The three regions have been discussed according to the relationship between the rate of slip-step formation and the rate of dissolution. Fracture appearances in different environments were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SCC fracture appears as a mixture of intergranular and dimples, while it is totally dimples in the inert environment. The εf becomes the parameter to predict tf because the relationship between εf^Cl/εf^W and tf^Cl/tf^w is a straight line for AerMet 100.展开更多

The method is based on the new reaction AlI3+(3/2)Zn=Al+(3/2)ZnI2. In its turn, the exchange reaction AlCl3+CaI2→AlI3+CaCl2 is used to get aluminum iodide from aluminum chloride—the product of alumina carbochlorination. These reactions were studied in laboratory experiments as well as additional reactions, which were needed for the main chemicals recycling: Cl2, ZnI2→Zn, CaCl2→CaI2. XRD and SEM methods were used to investigate the phases and morphology of the reaction's solid products. The global free energy minimization method was used for the chemical equation's calculations. It was shown that aluminum can be effectively extracted from alumina without electrolysis, extreme high temperature and expended chemicals. The estimated specific carbon consumption and CO2 atmospheric pollution rate have to be halves of such values for the contemporary aluminum plant powered by the coal power station.展开更多
