Employability Skills Needed by Higher Vocational Education Graduates to Be Successful in the Workplace

The current issues in workforce development are on high competence not only in technical skills, but also in non-technical skills. The term of non-technical skills is also called as employability skills. The research with topic analysis and development ofemployability skills of polytechnic students aims to： describe supervisors＇ perceptions of the importance of the employability skills needed in the workplace; describe supervisors＇ perceptions of the students＇ level of competence at performing the employability skills; and find the attributes of employability skills that are need to prioritize for development. Research sample has been selected by using a stratified random sampling from the supervisor of last year students when they are on the job training in industry. Total 146 supervisors participated in this research. The Employability Skills Questionnaire with a five-point Liken scale was used to assess perceptions level of importance of identified employability skills and students＇ level of competence. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, means and standard deviations, and priority development analysis. Three main groups of the employability skills with highest important level are： workplace health and safety, self-management, and team working. Students have a high level of competence in occupational health and safety, self-management and learning skills. There are three attributes of employability skills in high priority category for developed： knowing the benefits of computer application programs are needed in the work, taking the initiative in organizing activities, and participating in learning activities to gain new experience.

In this paper, the writer analyzed the vocational colleges engineering graduates employment status quo, investigated many unfavorable factors affecting the employment of graduates. Finally, the write strive to fred countermeasures come to reduce or eliminate the adverse factors. Current graduates＇ increasingly severe employment pressure situation and the analysis to guide and promote the employment of graduates of vocational college graduates have some practical significance.

Do Engineering Diploma Students Drop out Due to Reasons Other Than Academic Performance

The aim of this paper is to highlight the fact that students enter their higher education careers underprepared and fail their engineering studies due to the lack of various life skills. The South African Government is attempting to redress the social inequalities which prevailed in the education sector during the apartheid era. However, many students attempting their higher education studies are in many respects still under-prepared. This is mainly due to insufficient life skills, communication skills, numeric skills, and literacy skills. In the current study it was established, by means of a self-administered questionnaire, that students＇ lacking time of management skills, and study skills, are conditioned by their schooling not to value or use prescribed text books. These results re-emphasise the fact that students drop out of the programme for reasons other than academic performance and underline the need for effective measures toward student support and effective student learning.

开放大学：过去充满传奇但前景依然未卜？

自从1969年英国开放大学建校以来,世界各地出现了约60所开放大学,它们对各自国家的高等教育产生了重大影响。本文阐述开放大学运动的10大重要贡献。然而,绝大多数开放大学采用源自早期服务非全日制和成人学生的函授学校工业化组织模式。虽然开放大学的模式非常成功,但是,技术已经发生巨大变化,越来越多常规大学也在采用在线和混合式学习,而且常常做得非常好。巨型开放大学(学生规模达到10万或以上的大学)会继续享有令人羡慕的规模经济,但是工业化模式不大适合规模较小的开放大学。另外,因特网和新兴社交媒体极大扩大了获取机会。因此,工业化模式原有的一些优势在当今可能不那么明显了。高等教育正在经历从精英式转变为大众化的快速变化,大学的角色和权限也随之面临着挑战。本文在这个背景下专门讨论开放大学的未来以及致力于发展21世纪新型大学的教育改革者能从开放大学的实践中得到什么经验教训。
