Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy Between Tradition and Innovation

Since the mid-1980s Chinese calligraphy art has undergone a radical change and has opened itself to experimentation. A vivid debate on CCC （Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy） （Zhongguo xiandai shufa） is involving art critics in China nowadays. WANG Dongling and the modernists think that, despite many changes and influences, we can still refer to the traditional calligraphic lexicon to describe the calligraphic production of contemporary Chinese art. They still remain deeply rooted in the signified system of Chinese writing, even if they break with the strict rules of Chinese classical aesthetic （contamination of Western elements and focus on the stylistic exploration）. WANG Nanming and the Avant-garde think that ＂contemporary calligraphy is not calligraphy yet＂： It is ＂anti-calligraphy＂, annihilates Chinese tradition, rejects the use of legible characters, experiments with new languages and new media within the idiom of international contemporary art. The result is the creation of works of art that could be assimilated to Abstract art, Abstract expressionism, Conceptual art, Performance art, Contemporary dance, Multimedia art, and even Street art. This paper aims at showing how still valid and extremely productive are both these two theoretical and creative/practical approaches to Chinese calligraphy in China nowadays. They turned the art of calligraphy into a medium for global comprehension and communication.

The “Liberation” Theme of Modern Chinese Literature

The concept of “liberation” has profoundly influenced the development of modern Chinese literature,giving rise to a “liberation” theme with profound implications.Modern Chinese literature can be analyzed from the joint perspectives of the liberators,the routes to liberation and the scope of liberation.Variations among the liberators have led to the two different concepts of self-liberation and being liberated;the differences in the routes to liberation have led to the intermixture of liberation based on persuasion and struggle-based liberation;and the difference in the scope of liberation derives from the alternation of the partial achievement of thoroughgoing liberation and the full realization of incremental liberation.The Chinese concept of liberation was strongly shaped by the Communist Party of China (CPC);compared to the work of those writers influenced by the CPC’s concept of “liberation,” the writings of ordinary non-Communist writers present “liberation” differently.The latter tend to adopt an either/or attitude toward liberation,whereas the former ensure that liberation theme reflects the interaction and blending of different types of “liberation” concepts,thus establishing a new form of “liberation” writing.To mark the centenary of the CPC,we have reviewed and explored the “liberation” theme of modern Chinese literature in the hope that we will gain a full understanding of the theoretical discourse and historical practice of “liberation,” taking a dialectical approach to freedom and responsibility,respecting tradition while boldly pursuing innovation,and striving to explore the realistic significance and ideological value of literary works.

Reimagining the Soviet Union in Contemporary Chinese Literature： Soviet Ji in Wang Meng＇s In Remembrance of the Soviet Union and Feng Jicai＇s Listening to Russia

An examination of Soviet nostalgia--nostalgia for the times when the People＇s Republic of China （PRC） had a close relationship with the Soviet Union, as it appears in contemporary discourses that reimagine the Soviet Union, is essential to understand the quotidian aspect and cultural history of the PRC in the 1950s, as well as cultural attitudes in contemporary China. Wang Meng＇s In Remembrance of the Soviet Union （2007） and Feng Jicai＇s Listening to Russia （2005） are characterized by nostalgia for the lost Soviet Union, which exerted a strong influence on the PRC during the 1950s. In contemporary China, where the market economy is the dominant mode of production, Wang and Feng＇s Soviet nostalgia is a gesture of yearning for a type of historical temporality that has seemingly been lost. Their works express the desire to reclaim the historical past of the 1950s, which they portray as having been completely erased by the developmental logic of late-capitalism--the authentic cultural experiences in the 1950s, especially the everyday life along with the revolutionary ideals are rendered unreal within the post-revolutionary logic. The concept of Soviet ＂ji＂ （祭 ＂remembrance＂） provides a theoretical framework through which to understand the way in which the phenomenon of Chinese nostalgia has the potential to shift contemporary social reality.

After its founding in 1949,the People’s Republic of China'started to modernize its fiscal system-an essential part of its broader modernization drive.Its unified and wellfunctioning fiscal system supported the stability of the nascent government,and helped stabilize the economy and restore public order after then.In the era of the planned economy,public finance in the country was put at the service of economic plans while striving to reach a fiscal equilibrium,which was of great significance at that time.Economic equilibrium,including fiscal,credit and material equilibrium,was perceived as a manifestation of macroeconomic stability.Problems encountered during the era of the planned economy led to the launch of a reform and opening-up program-a brilliant chapter in modern Chinese history.The Third Plenum of the 11th CPC Central Committee marks a brand-new era of reform and opening-up.In this transformative period,China’s fiscal system was initially decentralized to keep abreast of its“planned commodity economy.”After the goal of socialist market economic reform was announced in 1992,China’s fiscal reforms embarked on a fast track.As China'strived to build a public finance system compatible with a socialist market economic system,fiscal reforms took place and fiscal policy played a more important role in macroeconomic regulation.The Third Plenum of the 18th CPC Central Committee held in November 2013 set the goal of the reform to establish a modern fiscal system.Afterwards,China deepened its fiscal reforms,focusing on budget management,taxation and reform of central-local fiscal relations.

中国当代非虚构文学的英译由英文版文学杂志肇始,逐渐发展到以单行本的英语出版为主流方式。随着中国的进步与发展,单行本的英译出版也由过去单一的“译入”模式发展到现在的“译入”与“译出”模式并举,昭示了国际社会了解真实中国的迫切需求,也反映出在中国文化走出去中非虚构文学所承载的独有价值与作用。非虚构文学面向事实,依赖真人真事展开叙事,其英译和传播对构建真实的中国国际形象至关重要。因此,有必要覆盖整个翻译传播链,开展以中国当代非虚构文学英译为专题的理论研究,以强化我国非虚构文学英译的应有价值和功用。
