Object classification in high-density 3D point clouds with applications in precision farming is a very challenging area due to high intra-class variances and high degrees of occlusions and overlaps due to self-similar...Object classification in high-density 3D point clouds with applications in precision farming is a very challenging area due to high intra-class variances and high degrees of occlusions and overlaps due to self-similarities and densely packed plant organs, especially in ripe growing stages. Due to these application specific challenges, this contribution gives an experimental evaluation of the performance of local shape descriptors (namely Point-Feature Histogram (PFH), Fast-Point-Feature Histogram (FPFH), Signature of Histograms of Orientations (SHOT), Rotational Projection Statistics (RoPS) and Spin Images) in the classification of 3D points into different types of plant organs. We achieve very good results on four representative scans of a leave, a grape bunch, a grape branch and a flower of between 94 and 99% accuracy in the case of supervised classification with an SVM and between 88 and 96% accuracy using a k-means clustering approach. Additionally, different distance measures and the influence of the number of cluster centres are examined.展开更多

We hope that some of the issues raised by Kobayashi and Seto as to allowed inflation models may be addressed, once further refinement of these preliminary results commences. As we know, the Crandall conjecture is a well-known generalization of ...The 3<em>X</em> + 1 problem (Collatz conjecture) has been proposed for many years, however no major breakthrough has been made so far. As we know, the Crandall conjecture is a well-known generalization of the 3<em>X</em> + 1 problem. It is worth noting that, both conjectures are infamous for their simplicity in stating but intractability in solving. In this paper, I aim to provide a clear explanation about the reason why these two problems are difficult to handle and have very different characteristics on convergence of the series via creatively applying the probability theory and global expectancy value <em>E</em>(<em>n</em>) of energy contraction index. The corresponding convergence analysis explicitly shows that <em>a</em> = 3 leads to a difficult problem, while <em>a</em> > 3 leads to a divergent series. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first work to point out the difference between these cases. The corresponding results not only propose a new angle to analyze the 3<em>X</em> + 1 problem, but also shed some light on the future research.展开更多
Farming is still an important sector in rural economic development of West Virginia where 44% of the population lives in rural areas and 24% of the land is used for farming. While income earnings, education and employ...Farming is still an important sector in rural economic development of West Virginia where 44% of the population lives in rural areas and 24% of the land is used for farming. While income earnings, education and employment rates are low in rural areas, poverty rates and unemployment are high compared to the urban areas. Thus, in the context of rural development farming is a potential major economic sector where 42% of the people's primary occupation is reported as farming. The objective of this study is to identify and estimate the potential impacts of farm employment in rural economic growth of West Virginia. Data from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S Census Bureau for the period of 1993 to 2008 are used for the empirical analysis. A model derived from the three simultaneous equations of Duncan is used for analysis. Three-Stage Least Squares (3SLS) method using the statistical package of STATA is used for estimation. The results concerning simultaneous relationships with population density growth, per capita income growth, and farm employment growth reveal significant importance of farming in rural economic development of West Virginia. Furthermore, the results indicate the positive impacts of population density, number of people with farming as principal occupation, and crop production on rural farming sector.展开更多

Using experiment...In this paper we consider averaging and finite difference methods for solving the 3-D boundary-value problem in a multilayered domain. We consider the metal concentration in the 3 layered peat blocks. Using experimental data the mathematical model for calculating the concentration of metal at different points in peat layers is developed. A specific feature of these problems is that it is necessary to solve the 3-D boundary-value problems for the partial differential equations (PDEs) of the elliptic type of second order with piece-wise diffusion coefficients in the three layer domain. We develop here a finite-difference method for solving a problem of the above type with the periodical boundary condition in x direction. This procedure allows reducing the 3-D problem to a system of 2-D problems by using a circulant matrix.展开更多
