They are also inherently communicative processes that are largely constructed and enacted through language in various institutional discourses. In Urhobo, sex proverbs copiously couch the ideological conceptualizations of the male-female biological asymmetry. Studies on Urhobo proverbs dwell largely on functional applications and documentations of the proverbs, thereby overlooking their ideological underpinnings. Therefore, in this paper, efforts are geared toward investigating and unravelling ideologies that have been habitualized in the semantic and pragmatic structures of the Urhobo sex proverbs. The intention is to throw open the patterns of relationship between the male and female participants in the society in relation to sex matters and power. Twenty-six Urhobo indigenes (six males and 20 females), who are competent in the socioculture and language were successfully interviewed to elicit Urhobo sex proverbs. Proverbs that contain the following lexical items: penis, virgina, to make love, or to have sex are purposively selected and subjected to CDA (critical discourse analysis). The main assumption of CDA is that language is both the site and the stake in the struggle for power and domination. Findings show that in the Urhobo sex proverbs, there is asymmetry in access to sexual relations between the male and female. Although the sex proverbs do not always refer to copulation, they are often employed as powerful instruments to dominate and instil fear in the female participant. Consequently, patriarchal discourses are further entrenched in the society展开更多

It also traces the origin of interdiscursivity and takes it as a special kind of intertextuality. Then the paper gives a review of interdiscursivity studies in literary and non-literary fields. The former is usually conducted from the stylistic approach, while the latter from the CDA (critical discourse analysis) approach. The contributions and limitations of the previous studies are also summarized with the purpose of presenting an objective picture of the research. Based upon the detailed review, the paper offers some perspectives for the future research. It is hoped that this will shed some light on our understanding of interdiscursivity.展开更多

CDA (Critical Discourse Analysis) is an approach that allows for text, processing and social analyses. This paper focuses on the problem-solution discourse pattern in a text selected from the responses of 86 Chinese law school freshmen to a writing test prompt that addressed problems with learning English. The text was compared and contrasted with the response of the same subject as a senior to the identical prompt. The objectives of the CDA were to investigate what constraints were placed on contents, relations and subjects in terms of discourse and to describe, interpret and explain formal features that function to elicit experiential, relational and expressive values simultaneously in the texts. Further analyses of such texts may contribute to ESP (English for Specific Purposes) curriculum and materials development for non-English majors展开更多

However, the application of these renewable generating stations to weak network has been examined in very limited occasions. Weak networks have a range of limitations from system capacities to CFCT restrictions which would need to be well understood prior to wind energy integration. Of particular interest would be how much wind generation could be integrated into a weak network prior to increasing voltage and frequency stability issues brought about by penetration issues. This paper introduces a simple and practical approach based on the equal area criteria to investigate the stability of weak networks. Simulation results that are presented to show the proposed approach is a viable preliminary assessment tool to determine system stability on weak networks with wind power penetration.展开更多

The use of a stable power station (with high speed machines) will be critical in achieving fast and reliable transient response to network events, in particular, when large transient loads are expected on a continuous basis, i.e., industrial mining and mineral processing equipment. Simulation results of this paper assist in understanding how small power stations and wind generation equipment respond to large transients in an islanded network. In particular, detailed simulations and analyses will be presented on impacts of distributed wind generation units (1.5 MW DF1G) on the stability of a small weak network. The novelty of this paper is on detailed analyses and simulation of weak networks with interconnects DFIG's including their impacts on system stability under various transient operating conditions.展开更多
