Greek schools are witnessing widening gaps between traditional definitions and applications of literacy, which include reading, writing and speaking in terms of exercises from school textbooks and contemporary literacy practices like digital storytelling, interactive multimedia use and online communications. Language and literacy teachers of primary education are called upon daily to bridge these contradictions through pedagogical and textual choices they make in classroom teaching. This paper reports an experimental study with children of the fifth grade at public Greek schools to apply modernist literacy approaches involving digital storytelling and online communication in improving language skills. The paper analytically presents the didactic examples of a thematic union within the framework of the Greek curriculum and the alternative assessment for the experimental teaching on digital technologies among mother tongue learners. The findings have implications for teacher's and student's education and also for the integration of a pedagogical-technological content of curriculum within the continuing debate of being culturally and equally literate in today's education. 展开更多

Since 1968, the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program has aimed... Many language instructors in colleges and universities around the world have teaching assistants to help them with the teaching. Since 1968, the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program has aimed to strengthen foreign language instruction at U.S. educational institutions by establishing a native speaker presence. As one of the first group of Fulbright Chinese Language Assistants, the author worked at the College of Wooster in the United States from August, 2005 to May, 2006. At the beginning of the paper, the author gave a brief introduction of Fulbright FLTA program. Then the author described five cultural activities that Fulbright FLTAs could employ in foreign language learners' learning process: giving presentations, teaching songs, watching movies, organizing free tea or coffee breaks, and holding free talks. The following section discussed two phenomena that FLTAs should avoid, that is, ethnocentrism and cultural stereotyping. The author pointed out in the conclusion that Fulbright language assistants should make efforts to be qualified cultural ambassadors. 展开更多

This study applied both inductive approach and deductive approach with multimedia assistance into an English grammar class on the acquisition of subjunctive mood. It aimed to investigate whether this kind of teaching approach, as a general grammar pedagogy, would improve the efficiency of students' acquisition of certain grammar points. This study results from comparison and contrast between one same class on the acquisition of subjunctive mood to 70 students in total, employing three different teaching methods: inductive approach with multimedia assistance (method 1), deductive approach with multimedia assistance (method 2), and both inductive approach and deductive approach with multimedia assistance (method 3), based on self-reported reflection on the experiment, observation of students' learning process, students' pre-test and after-class evaluation test results, and surveys. Two identical experiments were conducted to two groups of students of different levels of language proficiency to increase the generalizability of the results. Findings revealed that the evaluation test score of the grammatical points taught with method 3 is much higher than those taught with the other two methods, and most students felt positive about method 3. Students nevertheless encounter obvious difficulties in inductive approach, indicating certain lack of self-learning skills in Chinese students 展开更多

Unfortunately, though, it seldom takes advantage of the new technologies and capabilities offered by the modern World Wide Web. In this article, we present an interactive online platform that provides users with learning activities for students of English as a foreign language. The platform focuses on using audiovisual multimedia content and a user experience (UX) centered approach to provide learners with an enhanced learning experience that aims at improving their knowledge level while at the same time increasing their engagement and motivation to participate in learning. To achieve this, the platform uses advanced techniques, such as interactive vocabulary and pronunciation assistance, mini-games, embedded media, voice recording, and more. In addition, the platform provides educators with analytics about user engagement and performance. In this study, more than 100 young students participated in a preliminary use of the aforementioned platform and provided feedback concerning their experience. Both the platform’s metrics and the user-provided feedback indicated increased engagement and a preference of the participants for interactive audiovisual multimedia-based learning activities.</span> </p> 展开更多

目的探讨多媒体辅助情景教学联合迷你临床评估练习(Mini-CEX)在普通外科临床教学中的应用效果,为普通外科医师规范化培训提供新的教学方法和思路。方法选取在新疆医科大学第五附属医院普通外科实习的60名临床医学专业本科生,随机分为试... 目的探讨多媒体辅助情景教学联合迷你临床评估练习(Mini-CEX)在普通外科临床教学中的应用效果,为普通外科医师规范化培训提供新的教学方法和思路。方法选取在新疆医科大学第五附属医院普通外科实习的60名临床医学专业本科生,随机分为试验组和对照组,每组30人。试验组采用多媒体辅助情景教学结合Mini-CEX联合教学模式,对照组采用传统教学模式。教学结束后分别从考核、Mini-CEX评分、教学满意度和教学效果评价等方面比较两组医学生的教学效果。结果所有医学生顺利完成临床实习,教学结束后,试验组学生的理论考试成绩、实践操作考核成绩、Mini-CEX评分均高于对照组,两组间差异具有统计学意义。试验组的教学满意度也显著高于对照组。结论多媒体辅助情景教学结合Mini-CEX联合教学模式在普通外科临床教学中取得了较好的效果,能够有效提升医学生理论成绩、操作能力和教学满意度,适合作为一种新的临床教学模式加以推广。 展开更多
