The paper aims to identify the major phonetic features of Canadian English by addressing its differences from British and American English based on a historical, demographical, and regional and dialectal analysis. Canadian English is a cultural phenomenon that has evolved on the basis of British English and under the heavy influence of American English. As a distinctive variety of English, Canadian English possesses its phonetic uniqueness. And in the context of globalization, Canadian English will remain subject to Americanization.

Grain-size Characteristics of Sediments Formed Since 8600 yr B.P. in Middle Reaches of Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet and Their Paleoenvironmental Significance

Widespread aeolian sediments have been found in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, China, The grain-size characteristics of sediments from Cha＇er Section in the area were analyzed. The results show that the section include one stratum of paleo-mobile dunes, four strata of paleo-semi-fixed dunes, two strata of paleo-fixed dunes, one stratum of sandy immature soils. The paleo-mobile and paleo-semi-fixed dune sand in this section are similar to modem aeolian sand in either grain-size composition or Mz and c distribution. Compared the above types of dunes each other, the content of sand substance decreases, while the content of silt and clay increases for paleo-fixed dunes and sandy immature soils. Combined with age data for each stratum, the analysis shows that these strata are the products of climate changes and the evolution of aeolian landforms. The evolutionary sequence of the paleoclimate and of aeolian activities in the valley since 8600 yr B.P. reveals four stages： 8600-5700 yr B.P., when the paleoclimate was cold and dry, with strong winds, thereby activating dunes; 5700-3600 yr B.P., when it was warm and wet, with weak winds, causing dunes to undergo soil-forming processes; 3600-1900 yr B.P., when climate shifted from cold-dry with strong winds to warm-wet with weak winds, and activated dunes were fixed again; and 1900 yr B.P. -present, when the climate became fine, with weak winds, fixing dunes again.

A New High-resolution Late Glacial-Holocene Climatic Record from Eastern Nanling Mountains in South China

A 350-cm-long sediment core sequence from Dahu Swamp situated in the eastern Nanling Mountains was selected for high-resolution paleoclimatic reconstruction since the Late Glacial period. The multi-proxy records of this paper reveal several evidently dry and cold events that may coincide with the Oldest Dryas, the Older Dryas, the Younger Dryas in the late deglacial period. Two relatively wetter and warmer phases occurred in ca. 15,000-14,400 cal yr B.P. and 13,500-12,800 cal yr B.P. respectively may correspond to the Boiling and Allerod warming events. The Younger Dryas event （ca. 12,800-11,500 cal yr B.P.） revealed by multi-proxies was characterized by relatively colder and drier climate. A warmer and wetter climate, occurred in ca. 10,000~5000 cal yr B.P., was consistent with the Holoeene Optimum, which coincided with the maximum Northern Hemisphere insolation. The ＂8.2kyr cool event＂ and even the ＂8.8kyr cool event＂ were indicated as well from our sediment core. A dry mid-Holocene period （ca. 60000 3000 cal yr B.P.） indicated by multi-proxies does not follow the traditional concept of the wet mid-Holocene conditions observed in other regions in China.

PVC Membrane Selective Electrode for Determination of Cadmium(Ⅱ) Ion in Chocolate Samples

Benzil bis(carbohydrazone)(BBC) is prepared and explored as new N N Schiff's base, which plays the role of an excellent ion carrier in the construction of a Cd(II) ion membrane sensor. The tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate best performance corresponds to a membrane composition of 30% poly(vinyl chloride), 65%(TEHP), 3.5% BBC and 1.5% tetradodecyl-ammoniumtetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate(ETH 500). This sensor shows very good selectivity and sensitivity towards cadmium ion over a wide variety of cations, including alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions. The effect of membrane composition, selectivity, pH and influence of additive on the response properties of electrode were investigated. The response mechanism was discussed in the view of UV-spectroscopy. The electrode exhibits a Nernstian behavior(with slope of 29.7 mV per decade) over a very wide concentration range from 1.0×10?1 to 1.0×10?8 mol·L?1 with a detection limit of 3.2×10?8 mol·L?1. It shows rela-tively fast response time in whole concentration range(<8 s) and can be used for at least 10 weeks in the pH range of 2.0-9.0. The proposed sensor is successfully used for the determination of cadmium in different chocolate sam-ples and as indicator electrode in titration with ethylene diamine tetraacetate(EDTA).

An Overview of the Smart Grid in Great Britain

This paper presents an overview of the current status of the development of the smart grid in Great Britain(GB).The definition,policy and technical drivers,incentive mechanisms,technological focus,and the industry's progress in developing the smart grid are described.In particular,the Low Carbon Networks Fund and Electricity Network Innovation Competition projects,together with the rollout of smart metering,are detailed.A more observable,controllable,automated,and integrated electricity network will be supported by these investments in conjunction with smart meter installation.It is found that the focus has mainly been on distribution networks as well as on real-time flows of information and interaction between suppliers and consumers facilitated by improved information and communications technology,active power flow management,demand management,and energy storage.The learning from the GB smart grid initiatives will provide valuable guidelines for future smart grid development in GB and other countries.

A New Auto-Backlund Transformation and Two-Soliton Solution for (3+l)-Dimensional Jimbo-Miwa Equation

Abstract By improving the extended homogeneous balance method, a general method is suggested to derive a new auto-Bgcklund transformation （BT） for （3-k l）-Dimensional Jimbo-Miwa （JM） equation. The auto-BT obtained by using our method only involves one quadratic homogeneity equation written as a bilinear equation. Based on the auto-BT, two-soliton solution of the （3＋1）-Dimensional JM equation is obtained.

Oxidation of Benzothiophenes Using Tert-amyl Hydroperoxide

Homogeneous oxidation using an oil-soluble oxidant, tert-amyl hydroperoxide （TAHP）, for ultra-deep desulfurization was performed under mild conditions in the presence of molybdenum oxide catalysts. Dibenzothio- phene （DBT）, benzothiophene （BT） and 4, 6-dimethyl-dibenzothiophene （DMDBT）, which are the refractory sulfur compounds for hydrodesulfurization （HDS）, were employed as model substrates for a simulated diesel fuel. Activity of molybdenum oxide supported on a macroporous weak acidic resin was investigated. The mass conversion of DBT reached near 100% at 90℃ and a TAHP/DBT molar ratio of 3 with 1% of molybdenum oxide supported on Amberlite IRC-748 resin for 1 h. It was further found that the activities of the model substrates decreased in the or- der of DMDBT 〉DBT 〉BT. In the flow oxidation using TAHP as the oxidant, mass conversion of DBT increased remarkably from 61.3% to 98.5% when dropping the weight hourly space velocity （WHSV） from 40 h^-1 to 10 h^-1. A series of experiments dealt with selectivity of this oxidation using TAHP revealed that the model unsaturated compounds, i.e. 4, 6, 8-trimethyl-2-nonylene, and 2-methylnaphthalene did not affect the oxidation of DBT. Carbazole had nearly no effect on the conversion of DBT using TAHP, but had some influence on the one using tert-butyl hydroperoxide （TBHP）. The mass conversion of DBT decreased remarkably from 75.2% to 3.6% when the content of carbazole increased from 0 to 500μg·g^-1. In the flow oxidation using TAHP as the oxidant, the concentration of DBT in model fuels was reduced from 500 μg·g^-1 to 7.2 μg·g^-1 at WHSV of 10 h^-1, and then reduced to 3.8 μg·g^-1 by adsorntion of Al2O3.

China English and College Intercultural Education:A Cultural Linguistic Perspective

In the era of globalization,English as an international language(EIL) is also the medium of intercultural communication for the international community.Based on the theory of cultural linguistics(CL),which regards language as culture-oriented rather than structure-oriented,Sharifian(2009,p.4) has proposed that varieties of English which constitute EIL result from the interaction between the English language and different local cultures.CL suggests that China English(CE) should be understood in this light:It is not a substandard interlanguage,but a variety of English with its own cultural value and right.This paper intends to systemically analyze the nature of CE and its value in intercultural communication so as to better understand current intercultural education.Over a long time,much emphasis has been laid on the importance of adapting to the target language culture to the neglect of home language culture in our College English classrooms,thus resulting in what is known as Chinese cultural aphasia.In the light of CL,intercultural communication competence(ICC) encompasses not only knowing English and adapting to its culture,but also using CE to introduce the native culture in which CE plays an irreplaceable role.Therefore,CE is undoubtedly a key remedy for Chinese cultural aphasia.More research on CL should be conducted as it provides felicitous disciplinary guidance for our college intercultural education.

Oxidative Desulfurization of Diesel Fuel with Hydrogen Peroxide Using Na_2WO_4 as Catalyst

Oxidative desulfurization was performed on Na2WO4 catalyst in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid under mild reaction conditions （atmospheric pressure and temperature range of 293--343 K）. Different organic compounds including benzothiophene （BT）, dibenzothiophene （DBT）, 4, 6-dimethyl dibenzothiophene （4, 6-DMDBT） were used to investigate the reactivity of this catalyst, and the effect of various parameters, such as temperature, solvents and the amount of oxidant reagent used in oxidative desulfurization reaction, was also examined. The results showed that the Na2WO4- H202 system was very effective for oxidative desulfurization, and the oxidation of BT, DBT and 4, 6-DMDBT was influenced by different parameters.

The Localization of UK Experience in Environmental Education in Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, Shenzhen, China

In China, the environmental education （EE） is a brief new but popular topic in recent several years as a method to cope with the gap between nature and children. EE was started in UK with a long-term development and the useful experience can be utilized for the Chinese EE development. As a case study, the experiences of UK organizations were summarized and applied in the EE system in Fairy Lake Botanical Garden in Shenzhen （SZBG）, China. The localization of UK’s experience in the EE development in SZBG in terms of EE program, course content and resource was summarized in this paper. There are also discussions for the future update of EE in SZBG and for other local organizations like botanical gardens, wetland parks, nature reserve etc.

Cyclone and Tsunami Hazards in the Arabian Sea-A Numerical Modelling Case Study by Royal HaskoningDHV

Significant loss of life and damage to properties, ecosystems and marine facilities occur due to various natural hazards such as cyclones and tsunamis. Royal HaskoningDHV has developed regional hydrodynamic and wave models covering the Northern Arabian Sea to address these issues. Cyclone modelling was carried out on 11 major cyclones since 1945 and the tsunami modelling on an earthquake along the Makran Fault Line in 1945. Sample results from these modelling studies are presented in this paper. The methodology described in this article for modelling cyclones and tsunamis in the Arabian Sea could be applied to simulate these natural hazards at other sites around the world.
