Transportation in Africa is unique in that it has the least developed public transport systems in the world, while also being one of the fastest urbanizing continents. Bus Rapid Transit being one of the public transport systems was introduced in Africa in 2008 as a means to provide solution on urban transportation challenges. Despite of public transport being the main means of transport in African developing countries, there have been a number of challenges that affects efficiency of performance of the system and makes its users uncomfortable. Therefore, the study aimed at exploring the setbacks or challenges associated with operation and performance of the BRT system in the African developing countries and address them. The study employed mixed methods research design that integrates both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and analysis. The study findings reveal that, there is an improvement on the perspectives of the commuters on public transport after introduction of BRT system. However, some challenges such as long waiting time, passengers overcrowding during peak hours, as well as safety and security can slowly change the perspective of the commuters. Therefore, to address these challenges it is recommended to reduce the long waiting time and improve accessibility by introduction of passenger information displays (bus information system) and automated fare collection system;reduce travel time by introduction of bus priority signal;and improve safety and security by introduction of signage and CCTV Camera within the bus and bus stops.展开更多

However, the SOS has performance advantages, in that the total trip time can be reduced depending on the number of skipped stations, crowds of passengers can be rapidly evacuated at congested stations in peak periods, and the cost to transit companies is reduced. There is a contradiction between reducing the trip time under the SOS and increasing the passengers' waiting times under an all-stop scheme. Given this situation, the three objectives of our study were to minimize the waiting and trip times of all passengers and the travel times of trains. A comprehensive estimation model is presented for the SOS. The mechanism through which the trip time for all passengers is affected by the SOS is analyzed in detail. A 0-I integer programming formulation is established for the three objectives, and is solved using a tabu search algorithm. Finally, an example is presented to demonstrate that the estimation method for the SOS is capable of optimizing the timetable and operation schemes for a Chinese urban rail transit network.展开更多

Many of these networks require elevated bridges. This results in a bridge-borne noise source, which occurs in addition to the main noise source (i.e., wheel-rail interactions). Bridge-borne noise is attracting increasing attention because of its low-frequency noise characteristics. This review paper first analyzes the space distribution, spectral characteristics, and sound pressure levels of noise radiated by all-concrete, steel- concrete composite, and all-steel bridges, mainly according to experimental studies. Second, this paper reviews exist- ing theoretical prediction models of noise emanating from bridges: the semianalytical method, the Rayleigh integral method, the boundary element method, and statistical energy analysis. Several case studies are reviewed, and their results are discussed. Finally, according to the results of the current review, the main factors affecting bridgeborne noise are analyzed, several noise reduction measures are proposed for different types of bridges, and their effectiveness is demonstrated.展开更多

The percent- ages of the viscosity modifiers used were: TPS (0%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 14% and 16%) and RST and HVA (8% and 12%) depending on the type of asphalt binder. Technical indicators of modifier asphalt were tested through con- ventional and unconventional binder tests. It has been found out that only a percentage greater than or equal to 14% TPS is reasonable to achieve the requirement set by 20,000 Pa. s for the 60℃ dynamic viscosity on local #70 grade asphalt. The results indicate that conventional bin- ders did not meet the requirements of the 60℃ dynamic viscosity when 12% of TPS or HVA modifiers were used. In addition, the B-type styrene-butadienne-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt binder has better viscosity balance than the A-type SBS modified when 8% of each of the three different kinds of viscosity modifiers is used. Therefore, the B-type modified SBS thus appears to be a suitable choice in asphalt mixtures for bus rapid transit lane with the 60℃ dynamic viscosity.展开更多

Based on the analysis of passen- ger's general travel expenses and operator's benefits, the constraints and objective functions are defined and the multiobjective optimization model for the train plan of urban rail transit is presented. Factors considered in the multi- objective optimization model include transport capacity, the requirements of traffic organization, corporation benefits, passenger demands, and passenger choice behavior under multi-train-routing mode. According to the characteristics of this model and practical planning experience, a three-phase solution was designed to gradually optimize the train formarion, train counts as well as operation periods. The instance of Changsha Metro Line 2 validates the feasibility and efficiency of this approach.展开更多

It was assumed that the time varying original-destination demand and passenger path choice probability were given. Passengers were assumed not to change their destinations and travel paths after delay occurs. CapaciW constraints of train and queue rules of alighting and boarding were taken into account. By using the time-driven simulation, the states of passengers, trains and other facilities in the network were updated every time step. The proposed methodology was also tested in a real network, for demonstration. The results reveal that short train delay does not necessarily result in passenger delays, while, on the contrary, some passengers may get benefits from the short delay. However, large initial train delay may result in not only knock-on train and passenger delays along the same line, but also the passenger delays across the entire rail transit network.展开更多

文摘This paper evaluates rail transit within the context of the transit policies implemented in Lima,Peru.First it reviews the implementation of rapid transit, and bus reform.Secondly,it evaluates the outcomes of such policies by using Total Factor Productivity for policy effectiveness,Data Envelopment Analysis for rapid transit performance, and Generalized Cost of Travel for improvements. This paper finds that implementation failed in enforcing key requirements for rail transit regarding penetration of CBD and short transfers to bus transit;and that the basic assumptions of bus reform did not hold regarding bus oversupply, bus congestion or bus pollution. This paper also finds that outcomes of policies failed dramatically in achieving the planning goals;however, rail transit(Metro)shows high level of resilience in serving large ridership at high speed. On the other hand, bus reform was associated with a disproportionate increase of motorization, well over the effect of income growth or car attractiveness, and more related to the excessive reduction of bus transit capacity ill-advised from unproved bus reform assumptions. This paper recommends expanding rail rapid transit due to its intensive use of green renewable energy and its potential of demand growth if combined with modern Intelligent Transportation services, but this opportunity can be wasted without the proposed policy constraint to achieve lower Generalized Cost of Travel at any governmental intervention for bus reform, instead of just reducing bus transit capacity as implemented. Finally, this paper recommends government to government contracts to build rail transit and to enforce proper planning.

文摘The skip-stop operation strategy (SOS) is rarely applied to Chinese urban rail transit networks because it is a simple scheme and a less universally popular transportation service. However, the SOS has performance advantages, in that the total trip time can be reduced depending on the number of skipped stations, crowds of passengers can be rapidly evacuated at congested stations in peak periods, and the cost to transit companies is reduced. Finally, an example is presented to demonstrate that the estimation method for the SOS is capable of optimizing the timetable and operation schemes for a Chinese urban rail transit network.

文摘In recent years, there has been rapid growth of Chinese rail transit networks. Finally, according to the results of the current review, the main factors affecting bridgeborne noise are analyzed, several noise reduction measures are proposed for different types of bridges, and their effectiveness is demonstrated.
文摘In order to find the effect of different viscosity modifier dosages on asphalt binder's performance in bus rapid transit lanes in the city of Chengdu, three different viscosity modifiers were analyzed: TAFPACK-super (TPS), high-viscosity additive (HVA) and road-science- technology (RST), and four different asphalt binders were investigated through laboratory experiments. Therefore, the B-type modified SBS thus appears to be a suitable choice in asphalt mixtures for bus rapid transit lane with the 60℃ dynamic viscosity.

文摘The train plan of urban rail transit under multi-routing mode can be divided into three parts: train formation, train operation periods and corresponding train counts of each routing in each period. The instance of Changsha Metro Line 2 validates the feasibility and efficiency of this approach.

文摘In order to study the spatiotemporal characteristics of the dockless bike sharing system(BSS)around urban rail transit stations, new normalized calculation methods are proposed to explore the temporal and spatial usage patterns of the dockless BSS around rail transit stations by using 5-weekday dockless bike sharing trip data in Nanjing,China.First, the rail transit station area(RTSA)is defined by extracting shared bike trips with trip ends falling into the area. Then, the temporal and spatial decomposition methods are developed and two criterions are calculated, namely, normalized dynamic variation of bikes(NDVB)and normalized spatial distribution of trips(NSDT).Furthermore, the temporal and spatial usage patterns are clustered and the corresponding geographical distributions of shared bikes are determined. The results show that four temporal usage patterns and two spatial patterns of dockless BSS are finally identified.Area type(urban center and suburb)has a great influence on temporal usage patterns.Spatial usage patterns are irregular and affected by limited directions, adjacent rail transit stations and street networks. The findings can help form a better understanding of dockless shared bike users behavior around rail transit stations, which will contribute to improving the service and efficiency of both rail transit and BSS.

文摘A simulation model was proposed to investigate the relationship between train delays and passenger delays and to predict the dynamic passenger distribution in a large-scale rail transit network. However, large initial train delay may result in not only knock-on train and passenger delays along the same line, but also the passenger delays across the entire rail transit network.
文摘This paper is mainly concerned with how to increase rail transit ridership and how to coordinate with multimodity to optimize the entire public transportation systems. Three case cities, Montreal, Toronto and San Francisco, with metro systems are reviewed in different aspects, including urban planning, transport policy, flexible fare system, safety and security measure, special service, new technical application to improve the quality and value of its service for increasing revenues and profit, comtributing to the long term development of public transit. Some conclusions can be drawn: 1) urban planning should be closely connected with urban transport planning; 2) the role of government is predominant to implement railtransit; 3) the facilifies of railtransit should be advanced, reliable and safe; 4) quality service should be match with rail facilities; 5) special service for the disabled, yound and senior should be advocated.

文摘As a development direction of urban rail transit system, the train autonomous circumambulate system(TACS)can operate in a safer, more efficient, and more economical mode. However, most urban rail transit systems transmit signals through industrial, scientific, and medical(ISM)frequency bands or narrow frequency bands, which cannot meet the requirements of TACS.As a promising solution, the 5th generation(5G)mobile communication provides more services for the future urban rail transit systems, and covers the shortages of exiting communication technologies in terms of capacity and reliability. In this paper,we first briefly review the research status of current train control system and introduce its limitations.Next,we propose a novel network architecture, and present new technologies and requirements of the proposed architecture for TACS.Some potential challenges are then discussed to give insights for further research of TACS.
