Background: Saddle bronc riding is one of...Objective: To present a case of a rodeo cowboy who suffered a seemingly routine 1st degree acromioclavicular (AC) sprain. The AC sprain was exacerbated by an elevated 1st rib. Background: Saddle bronc riding is one of three rough stock events in North American rodeo and the least common event for injury relative to bull riding and bareback riding. Shoulder injury in rodeo rough stock events make up 9.3% of all injuries. Approximately 28% of injuries in rodeo are considered minor sprains. The professional cowboy was thrown from his horse landing on the tip of his shoulder. The cowboy presented with a routine 1st degree AC sprain based on the Tossey and Rockwood definitions. Differential Diagnosis: Due to the mechanism of injury and forces produced with the cowboy being thrown to the ground, elimination of serious neck injury was critical. A scanning examination revealed some neck dysfunction. A cervical rotation, lateral flexion special test confirmed the additional elevated 1st rib in addition to the 1st degree AC sprain. Treatment: A chiropractic adjustment of the 1st rib reduced pain in the AC joint from a 6/10 to 1/10 immediately. Subsequently, the patient iced and was treated with one other 1st rib adjustment at a later date. Uniqueness: There were no cases of 1st degree AC sprains with an associated elevated first rib in the literature. It was very unique to relieve to the patient’s shoulder symptoms so dramatically in a short period of time with manual therapy to the first rib. Conclusions: It is important to follow a thorough history and physical examination of patients who suffer from a 1st degree AC sprain. The use of a scanning examination will help identify the primary source of pain (i.e. neck and/or shoulder). Manual therapy of the 1st rib may be useful in the treatment.展开更多

The Conference was opened by NSL Director Xiangyang Huang, who placed the event within the goals of the Library, and lauded the spirit of intemational collaboration in the area of data science and knowledge discovery. The whole event was an encouraging success with over 370 registered participants and highly enlightening presentations. This work presents the first-order comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology (1st-CASAM) for computing efficiently, exactly, and exhaustively, the first-order sensitivities of scalar-valued responses (res...This work presents the first-order comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology (1st-CASAM) for computing efficiently, exactly, and exhaustively, the first-order sensitivities of scalar-valued responses (results of interest) of coupled nonlinear physical systems characterized by imprecisely known model parameters, boundaries and interfaces between the coupled systems. The 1st-CASAM highlights the conclusion that response sensitivities to the imprecisely known domain boundaries and interfaces can arise both from the definition of the system’s response as well as from the equations, interfaces and boundary conditions defining the model and its imprecisely known domain. By enabling, in premiere, the exact computations of sensitivities to interface and boundary parameters and conditions, the 1st-CASAM enables the quantification of the effects of manufacturing tolerances on the responses of physical and engineering systems. Ongoing research will generalize the methodology presented in this work, aiming at computing exactly and efficiently higher-order response sensitivities for coupled systems involving imprecisely known interfaces, parameters, and boundaries.展开更多

Sanitation is a particularly sensitive issue in the world, especially in Africa where local communities are plagued by the problem of managing sludge which is causing a lot of damage in Africa and mainly in Cameroon. ...Sanitation is a particularly sensitive issue in the world, especially in Africa where local communities are plagued by the problem of managing sludge which is causing a lot of damage in Africa and mainly in Cameroon. This study aims to contribute to improving the management of sewage sludge in the municipality of Bafoussam 1st. For this study, the methodology used is field survey. The questionnaire was submitted to 120 households in the commune of Bafoussam 1st, in particular, we take into account knowledge of the health and environmental risks that can result from improper handling of sludge and its treatment. The results show that the most widespread sanitation system is traditional latrines. Similarly, 79.19% of those surveyed dump, the sludge collected at the landfill against only 14.28% who dump it in fields and 6.53% have no idea about the fate of the sludge from their sanitary facilities. It should also be noted that 55.83% of the people surveyed are not aware of the health and environmental risks of untreated sewage sludge and therefore do not take the precautions to avoid it. Subsequently, 93.75% of respondents say that the current landfill would be a nuisance and the main nuisances identified are water pollution and subsequent fish poisoning. Physico-chemical analyzes of the sludge revealed values much higher than the values provided for by the WHO standards. Thus, total nitrogen and phosphate ions represented respectively 97 mg/L and 47 mg/L against 35 and 30.4 mg/L for the standard;COD and BOD<sub>5</sub> represented respectively 3250 mg/L and 1100 mg/L against 150 and 40 mg/L provided by the WHO standards. It follows the temperature and the MES which gave values of 32.7°C and 1750 mg/L, values much higher than the standard (30°C and 50 mg/L).展开更多
