Despite its unfailing popularity and controversial nature, many initiators seem to equate MEF development with signature architecture, resulting in a persistent issue of underuse among MEFs in the post-event era. Although research findings indicate that the early stages hold the key to the future of MEFs, insufficient research on this crucial matter has been done to provide useful analyses as to how to achieve this. To rectify this, this paper presents a case study of China Pavilion (CP) as the most spotlighted MEF initiated by Expo 2010 Shanghai China. Through participant observation, archival records, and documentation, the case of CP was extensively explored to learn how the client organization has addressed the issues of form, function, and future positioning at the early stages. By linking the pre-Expo conceptualization with its post-Expo performance, the case brings a renewed attention to the early stages of MEF development. Although it is a single-case study, this research yields results that indicate the possibility of having beneficial spillover impact on broader-scale urban renewal by balancing an MEF's dual mandate.展开更多

The results indicate that a trend with amplitude of 1.0 is a dominant component for the AOD variability in the recent decade. During the World Expo 2010, the average AOD level reduced 30% in comparison to the long-term trend. Two dominant annual components decreased 80% and 100%. This implies that the air quality in Shanghai was remarkably improved, and environmental initiatives and comprehensive actions for effective. AOD and API reducing air pollution are variability analysis results indicate that semi-annual and annual signals are dominant components implying that the monsoon weather is a dominant factor in modulating the AOD and API variability. The variability of AOD and API in selected districts located in both downtown and suburban areas shows similar trends; i.e., in 2000 the AOD began a monotonic increase, reached the maxima around 2006, then monotonically decreased to 2011 and from around 2006 the API started to decrease till 2011. This indicates that the air quality in the entire Shanghai area, whether urban or suburban areas, has remarkably been improved. The AOD improved degrees (IDS) in all the selected districts are (8.6±1.9)%, and API IDS are (9.2±7.1)%, ranging from a minimum value of 1.5% for Putuo District to a maximum value of 22% for Xuhui District.展开更多

Two scenarios, i.e., the actual and expected figures of the waste sector, were assessed and compared, and 124.01 kg CO2-equivalent(CO2-eq.), 4.43 kg SO2-eq., 4.88 kg NO-3-eq., and 3509 m3 water per ton tourist waste were found to be released in terms of global warming(GW), acidification(AC),nutrient enrichment(NE) and spoiled groundwater resources(SGWR), respectively. The total GHG emission was around 3499 ton CO2-eq. from the waste sector in Expo Park, among which 86.47% was generated during the waste landfilling at the rate of 107.24 kg CO2-eq.,and CH4, CO and other hydrocarbons(HC) were the main contributors. If the waste sorting process had been implemented according to the plan scenario, around 497 ton CO2-eq.savings could have been attained. Unlike municipal solid waste, with more organic matter content, an incineration plant is more suitable for tourist waste disposal due to its high heating value, from the GHG reduction perspective.展开更多
