Objective:3,4-Oxo-isopropylidene-shikimic acid(ISA),a derivative of shikimic acid,has exhibited ameliorative effect on cognitive impairment in experimental animal models of dementia.This study investigated the effect ...Objective:3,4-Oxo-isopropylidene-shikimic acid(ISA),a derivative of shikimic acid,has exhibited ameliorative effect on cognitive impairment in experimental animal models of dementia.This study investigated the effect of ISA on lipid accumulation and adipokine secretion during differentiation of 3T3-L1 fibroblasts to adipocytes.Methods:3T3-L1 cells were cultured and treated with ISA(50e800 mM)from days 3e8.Lipid accumulation and triglyceride content were measured.Gene expression of adipokines(adiponectin,leptin,and resistin),CCAAT/enhancer binding protein(C/EBP)b,C/EBP a and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor g(PPAR g)and PPAR target genes,including adipocyte fatty acid binding protein(aP2)and fatty acid synthase(FAS)were investigated.Results:ISA promoted 3T3-L1 fibroblast differentiation to adipocytes and increased triglyceride content by 26%.On mechanistic levels,ISA increased expressions of C/EBP b,PPAR g,C/EBP a,aP2 and FAS.Moreover,ISA stimulated expressions of adipokines secreted by adipocytes,including adiponectin,leptin,and resistin.Conclusions:These findings demonstrated that ISA promoted adipogenesis by up-regulating expressions of C/EBP b,PPAR g,C/EBP a,aP2 and FAS,and also stimulated adipokines during adipocyte differentiation.Further study should clarify the relationship between stimulation of adipokines and cognitive enhancing effect of ISA.展开更多

The compound presents a one-dimensional (1-D) double-stranded structure and exhibits fluorescent emission at room temperature. Intramolecular energy transfer process for these complexes is discussed in detail. It is found that the intramolecular energy transfer efficiency depends on the relative positions between the resonance energy levels of the central rare earth ions and the lowest triplet state energies of ligands.展开更多
An innovative,ternary nanocomposite composed of overoxidized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(OPEDOT),gold nanoparticles(Au NPs),and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide(ERGO)was prepared on a glassy carbon electr...An innovative,ternary nanocomposite composed of overoxidized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(OPEDOT),gold nanoparticles(Au NPs),and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide(ERGO)was prepared on a glassy carbon electrode(GCE)(OPEDOT-Au NPs-ERGO/GCE)through homogeneous chemical reactions and heterogeneous electrochemical methods.The morphology,composition,and structure of this nanocomposite were characterized by transmission electron microscopy,scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.The electrochemical properties of the OPEDOT-Au NPs-ERGO/GCE were investigated by cyclic voltammetry using potassium ferricyanide and hexaammineruthenium(III)chloride redox probe systems.This modified electrode shows excellent electro-catalytic activity for dopamine(DA)and uric acid(UA)under physiological p H conditions,but inhibits the oxidation of ascorbic acid(AA).Linear voltammetric responses were obtained when DA concentrations of approximately 4.0-100μM and UA concentrations of approximately 20-100μM were used.The detection limits(S/N=3)for DA and UA were 1.0 and 5.0μM,respectively,under physiological conditions and in the presence of 1.0 m M of AA.This developed method was applied to the simultaneous detection of DA and UA in human urine,where satisfactory recoveries from 96.7%to 105.0%were observed.This work demonstrates that the developed OPEDOT-Au NPs-ERGO ternary nanocomposite,with its excellent ion-selectivity and electro-catalytic activity,is a promising candidate for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA in the presence of AA in physiological and pathological studies.展开更多
The 9-octadecanoic acid-hexadecanoic acid-tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diyl ester from neem oil was investigated for antibacterial activity against three bacterial strains viz., Staphylococcus aureus ATCC No. 25923, Escherichi...The 9-octadecanoic acid-hexadecanoic acid-tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diyl ester from neem oil was investigated for antibacterial activity against three bacterial strains viz., Staphylococcus aureus ATCC No. 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC No. 44102 and Salmonella sp. ATCC No. 50 041 in vitro. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of the 9-octadecanoic acid-hexadecanoic acid-tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diyl ester were determined by using the broth microdilution dilution (BMD) method at different concentrations ranging from 20 to 0.625 mg mL-1. Its time-inhibition curve against E. coli was also tested and showed that the MIC values for the bacterial strains S. aureus, E. coli and Salmonella sp. were 20, 5 and 10 mg mL-1, respectively. Its MBC values were 20, 20 and 10 mg mL-1, respectively. The antibacterial activity of 9-octadecanoic acid-hexadecanoic acid-tetrahydrofuran-3,4-diyl ester against three strain tested showed the relationship with time and concentration.展开更多
Recent studies have demonstrated that ferulic acid[3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenoic acid]and sodium ferulate produce protective effects against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in adult mice.Danshensu(β-3,...Recent studies have demonstrated that ferulic acid[3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenoic acid]and sodium ferulate produce protective effects against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in adult mice.Danshensu(β-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-lactic acid)has a similar molecular structure and pharmacological action to caffeic acid.This study aimed to validate the protection conferred by Danshensu against excitotoxic effects of maternal intragastric administration of monosodium glutamate at late stages of pregnancy in the developing mouse fetal brain.Behavioral tests,as well as histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of hippocampi were performed in filial mice.Results revealed that maternal intragastric administration of excessive monosodium glutamate(1.0,2.0,4.0 g/kg body weight)at a late stage of pregnancy resulted in a series of behavioral disorders(hyperactivity,lesions of learning and memory,and disturbance in cooperation of movement ability under high-altitude stress),histopathological impairment(neuronal edema,degeneration,necrosis,and hyperplasia)and molecular cellular biological changes(upregulated expression of N-methyI-D-aspartate receptor type 1 and neuropeptide Y in the hippocampal region of the brain of the filial mice from mothers treated with monosodium glutamate).Simultaneous administration of sodium Danshensu partially reversed the effects of monosodium glutamate on the above mentioned phenomena.These findings indicate that sodium Danshensu exhibits obvious protective effects on the excitotoxicity of monosodium glutamate.展开更多
