A novel three-dimensional-fiber reinforced soft pneumatic actuator(3D-FRSPA)inspired by crab claw and human hand structure that can bend and deform independently in each segment is proposed. It has an omni-directional bending configuration, and the fibers twined symmetrically on both sides to improve the bending performance of FRSPA.In this paper, the static and kinematic analysis of 3D-FRSPA are carried out in detail. The effects of fiber, pneumatic chamber and segment length, and circular air chamber radius of 3D-FRSPA on the mechanical performance of the actuator are discussed, respectively. The soft mobile robot composed of 3D-FRSPA has the ability to crawl. Finally, the crawling processes of the soft mobile robot on different road conditions are studied, respectively, and the motion mechanism of the mobile actuator is shown. The numerical results show that the soft mobile robots have a good comprehensive performance, which verifies the correctness of the proposedmodel. This work shows that the proposed structures have great potential in complex road conditions, unknown space detection and other operations. 展开更多

A physically-based numerical three-dimensional earthen dam piping failure model is developed for homogeneous and zoned soil dams. This model is an erosion model, coupled with force/moment equilibrium analyses.Orifice flow and two-dimensional(2D)shallow water equations(SWE)are solved to simulate dam break flows at different breaching stages.Erosion rates of different soils with different construction compaction efforts are calculated using corresponding erosion formulae. The dam's real shape, soil properties, and surrounding area are programmed.Large outer 2D-SWE grids are used to control upstream and downstream hydraulic conditions and control the boundary conditions of orifice flow, and inner 2D-SWE flow is used to scour soil and perform force/moment equilibrium analyses. This model is validated using the European Commission IMPACT(Investigation of Extreme Flood Processes and Uncertainty)Test#5 in Norway,Teton Dam failure in Idaho,USA,and Quail Creek Dike failure in Utah,USA.All calculated peak outflows are within 10%errors of observed values.Simulation results show that, for a V-shaped dam like Teton Dam,a piping breach location at the abutment tends to result in a smaller peak breach outflow than the piping breach location at the dam's center;and if Teton Dam had broken from its center for internal erosion,a peak outflow of 117851 m'/s,which is 81%larger than the peak outflow of 65120 m3/s released from its right abutment, would have been released from Teton Dam.A lower piping inlet elevation tends to cause a faster/earlier piping breach than a higher piping inlet elevation. 展开更多

Combined multi-body dynamics with structural dynamics, a new discrete element with flexible connector, which is applicable for 3-D beam structures, is developed in this paper. Both the generalized elastic coefficient matrix of the flexible connector and the mass matrix of discrete element may be off-diagonal in a general case. The zero-length rigid element is introduced to simulate the node at which multiple elements are jointed together. It may also be effective when the axes of adjacent elements are not in the same line. The examples for eigenvalue calculation show that the model is successful. It can be extended to the geometric nonlinear response analysis. 展开更多

During recent years, the axial-flus PMSM with contra-rotating rotors has become a hot topic in academic research due to its high efficiency and simple structure. However, its back-EMF may be distorted under the condition of different angular positions. This paper investigates characteristics of the novel motor used for contra-propeller driving.Considering the torque ripple and current oscillation under unbalanced load condition, this paper analyzes the distorted back-EMF of the machine when its two rotors get different angular positions during rotating. The analysis results are validated by transient-magnetic 3-D FEA method, which the 3-D FEA software is used to model this motor and transient simulations are carried out to obtain its magnetic characteristic and main performances.A main focus is put on the back-EMF characteristic with different angular positions between the two rotors.Furthermore, the characteristic of torque production under unbalanced load is investigated. Finally,a prototype motor is fabricated to validate the analyses of this paper. 展开更多

To simplify its analysis, it is as-sumed that the failure probability of each node is independent. A 3-D mesh is partitioned into smaller submeshes, and then the probability with which each submesh satisfies the defined condition is computed. If each submesh satis-fies the condition, then the whole mesh is connected. Consequently, the probability that a 3-D mesh is connected iscomputed assuming each node has a failure probability. Mathematical methods are used to derive a relationship be-tween network node failure probability and network connectivity probability. The calculated results show that the 3-D mesh networks can remain connected with very high probability in practice. It is formally proved that when thenetwork node failure probability is boutded by 0.45 %, the 3-D mesh networks of more than three hundred thousandnodes remain connected with probability larger than 99 %. The theoretical results show that the method is a power-ful technique to calculate the lower bound of the connectivity probability of mesh networks. 展开更多

Combining speckle interferometry with photoelasticity, the absolute retardation fringes in 3-D model are obtained by interference of the polarized rays reflected from the two surfaces of a sandwiched plate inside the model. This method can avoid the troubles introduced by Poisson's ratio μ=0.5 and stress-optical constants ratio A/B=-2 of the photoelastic material in a stress-frozenstate,and yield the re- sults which provide necessary supplementary information for the completely-experimental solution of 3-D stress state.A comparison of experimental results with theoretical ones shoves the feasibility of the method proposed in the present paper. 展开更多

The spaceborne synthetic aperture radar(SAR)sparse flight 3-D imaging technology through multiple observations of the cross-track direction is designed to form the cross-track equivalent aperture, and achieve the third dimensionality recognition. In this paper, combined with the actual triple star orbits,a sparse flight spaceborne SAR 3-D imaging method based on the sparse spectrum of interferometry and the principal component analysis(PCA)is presented.Firstly, interferometric processing is utilized to reach an effective sparse representation of radar images in the frequency domain.Secondly,as a method with simple principle and fast calculation, the PCA is introduced to extract the main features of the image spectrum according to its principal characteristics. Finally, the 3-D image can be obtained by inverse transformation of the reconstructed spectrum by the PCA.The simulation results of 4.84 km equivalent cross-track aperture and corresponding 1.78 m cross-track resolution verify the effective suppression of this method on high-frequency sidelobe noise introduced by sparse flight with a sparsity of 49%and random noise introduced by the receiver.Meanwhile, due to the influence of orbit distribution of the actual triple star orbits, the simulation results of the sparse flight with the 7-bit Barker code orbits are given as a comparison and reference to illuminate the significance of orbit distribution for this reconstruction results. This method has prospects for sparse flight 3-D imaging in high latitude areas for its short revisit period. 展开更多

In this process, the heating system parameters and the material properties have important effects on the achieved hardened surface characteristics. The control of these variables using predictive modeling strategies leads to the desired surface properties without following the fastidious trial and error method. However, when the dimensions of the surface to be treated are larger than the cross section of the laser beam, various laser scanning patterns can be used. Due to their effects on the hardened surface properties, the attributes of the selected scanning patterns become significant variables in the process. This paper presents numerical and experimental investigations of four scanning patterns for laser surface hardening of AISI 4340 steel. The investigations are based on exhaustive modelling and simulation efforts carried out using a 3D finite element thermal analysis and structured experimental study according to Taguchi method. Traditional feature-based turbine blade models can match the needs of geometric modeling but could hardly meet the requirement of data extraction in 1-D heat transfer analysis. In this paper, the requirements of data extraction in 1-D heat transfer analysis are taken into consideration as well as geometric representation in parametric design process. An improved turbine blade parametric modeling method is proposed. Based on the modeling method proposed, a system structure of blade modeling process considering 1-D heat transfer analysis is devised. Eventually, a turbine blade parametric modeling system is constructed to test and verify the feasibility of the proposed modeling method and system structure. Experiments show that the blade parametric modeling method proposed can make geometric models better adapt to the specific requirements of 1-D heat transfer analysis and has certain reference value to the creation of high quality digital models. 展开更多

Effectively and accurately modelling the spatial relation of fracture surfaces is crucial in the design and construction of large hydropower dams having a complex underlying geology. However, fracture surfaces are randomly formed and vary greatly with respect to their spatial distribution, which makes the construction of accurate 3-D models challenging. In this study, we use an optimal Monte Carlo simulation and dynamic conditioning to construct a fracture network model. We found the optimal Monte Carlo simulation to effectively reduce the error associated with the Monte Carlo method and use dynamic conditioning to ensure the consistency of the model with the actual distribution of fractures on the excavation faces and outcrops. We applied this novel approach to a hydropower station on the Jinshajiang River, China. The simulation results matched the real sampled values well, confirming that the model is capable of effectively and accurately simulating the spatial relations in a fracture network. 展开更多

As functional components of machine tools, parallel mechanisms are widely used in high efficiency machining of aviation components, and accuracy is one of the critical technical indexes. Lots of researchers have focused on the accuracy problem of parallel mechanisms, but in terms of controlling the errors and improving the accuracy in the stage of design and manufacturing, further efforts are required. Aiming at the accuracy design of a 3-DOF parallel spindle head(A3 head), its error model, sensitivity analysis and tolerance allocation are investigated. Based on the inverse kinematic analysis, the error model of A3 head is established by using the first-order perturbation theory and vector chain method. According to the mapping property of motion and constraint Jacobian matrix, the compensatable and uncompensatable error sources which affect the accuracy in the end-effector are separated. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis is performed on the uncompensatable error sources. The sensitivity probabilistic model is established and the global sensitivity index is proposed to analyze the influence of the uncompensatable error sources on the accuracy in the end-effector of the mechanism. The results show that orientation error sources have bigger effect on the accuracy in the end-effector. Based upon the sensitivity analysis results, the tolerance design is converted into the issue of nonlinearly constrained optimization with the manufacturing cost minimum being the optimization objective. By utilizing the genetic algorithm, the allocation of the tolerances on each component is finally determined. According to the tolerance allocation results, the tolerance ranges of ten kinds of geometric error sources are obtained. These research achievements can provide fundamental guidelines for component manufacturing and assembly of this kind of parallel mechanisms. 展开更多

In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element modelling (FEM) analysis is carried out to investigate the effects of soil spatial variability on the response of retaining walls and an adjacent box culvert due to a braced excavation. The spatial variability of soil stiffness is modelled using a variogram and calibrated by high-quality experimental data. Multiple random field samples (RFSs) of soil stiffness are generated using geostatistical analysis and mapped onto a finite element mesh for stochastic analysis of excavation-induced structural responses by Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the spatial variability of soil stiffness can be described by an exponential variogram, and the associated vertical correlation length is varied from 1.3 m to 1.6 m. It also reveals that the spatial variability of soil stiffness has a significant effect on the variations of retaining wall deflections and box culvert settlements. The ignorance of spatial variability in 3D FEM can result in an underestimation of lateral wall deflections and culvert settlements. Thus, the stochastic structural responses obtained from the 3D analysis could serve as an effective aid for probabilistic design and analysis of excavations. 展开更多

In this paper,a new M3Y-type effective nucleon–nucleon interaction, derived based on the lowest order constrained variational approach(LOCV)and termed B3Y-Fetal,has been used in DDM3Y1,BDM3Y1,BDM3Y2,and BDM3Y3 density-dependent versions in a heavy ion(HI)optical potential based on four types of a real folded potential and a phenomenological Woods–Saxon imaginary potential to study the elastic scattering of the^(16)O+^(16)O nuclear system within the framework of the optical model(OM)by computing the associated differential cross sections at various incident energies. The results of the folding analyses have shown the DDB3Y1-Fetal and BDB3Y1-Fetal,out of the four folded potentials, give a reasonably better description of the elastic data of the nuclear system. These best-fit folded potentials are followed,in performance,by the BDB3Y2-Fetal,with the BDB3Y3-Fetal potential coming last. This performance trend was also demonstrated by the optical potentials based on the M3Y-Reid interaction.Furthermore, the best-fit folded potentials, renormalized by a factor NRof approximately 0.9,have been shown to reproduce the energy dependence of the real optical potential for^(16)O scattering found in previous optical model analyses creditably well.In excellent agreement with previous works, they have also been identified in this work to belong to the family of deep refractive potentials because they have been able to reproduce and consistently describe the evolution of Airylike structures,at large scattering angles, observed in the^(16)O scattering data at different energies. Finally,a comparison of the performances of B3Y-Fetal and M3Y-Reid effective interactions undertaken in this work has shown impressive agreement between them. 展开更多

Fetr6 is an underground mine in which chromite is extracted using stope and pillar mining method. Despite of all improving works such as roof supporting and replacing of ore pillars with concrete pillars, pillar No. 19 failed and other pillars failed progressively as a domino effect and 4000 m2 of mine collapsed within a few minutes, consequently. For detail investigation, two 3-D numerical models were developed by 3Dec. The first, a base model, was used for estimation of stress on pillars just before failure and the other for investigation of rock burst in pillar No. 19. The results show that discontinuity parameters such as friction angle and shear stiffness is critical parameters in this pillar failure. In addition, it indicates that W/H ratio equal 0.3, the lack of ore extraction strategy and inadequate roof support are the major reasons for this failure.
