During recent years, the axial-flus PMSM with contra-rotating rotors has become a hot topic in academic research due to its high efficiency and simple structure. However, its back-EMF may be distorted under the condition of different angular positions. This paper investigates characteristics of the novel motor used for contra-propeller driving.Considering the torque ripple and current oscillation under unbalanced load condition, this paper analyzes the distorted back-EMF of the machine when its two rotors get different angular positions during rotating. The analysis results are validated by transient-magnetic 3-D FEA method, which the 3-D FEA software is used to model this motor and transient simulations are carried out to obtain its magnetic characteristic and main performances.A main focus is put on the back-EMF characteristic with different angular positions between the two rotors.Furthermore, the characteristic of torque production under unbalanced load is investigated. Finally,a prototype motor is fabricated to validate the analyses of this paper. 展开更多

Long-span bridges are special structures that require advanced analysis techniques to examine their performance. This paper presents a procedure developed to model the Confederation Bridge using 3-D beam elements. The model was validated using the data collected before the opening of the bridge to the public. The bridge was instrumented to conduct fullscale static and dynamic tests. The static tests were to measure the deflection of the bridge pier while the dynamic tests to measure the free vibrations of the pier due to a sudden release of the static load. Confederation Bridge is one of the longest reinforced concrete bridges in the world. It connects the province of Prince Edward Island and the province of New Brunswick in Canada. Due to its strategic location and vital role as a transportation link between these two provinces, it was designed using higher safety factors than those for typical highway bridges. After validating the present numerical model, a procedure was developed to evaluate the performance of similar bridges subjected to traffic and seismic loads. It is of interest to note that the foundation stiffness and the modulus of elasticity of the concrete have significant effects on the structural responses of the Confederation Bridge. 展开更多

In this article, the fmite element solution of quasi-three-dimensional (quasi-3-D) groundwater flow was mathematically analyzed. The research shows that the spurious oscillation solution to the Finite Element Model (FEM) is the results choosing the small time step △t or the large element size L and using the non-diagonal storage matrix. The mechanism for this phenomenon is explained by the negative weighting factor of implicit part in the discretized equations. To avoid spurious oscillation solution, the criteria on the selection of △t and L for quasi-3-D groundwater flow simulations were identified. An application example of quasi-3-D groundwater flow simulation was presented to verify the criteria. The results indicate that temporal discretization scale has significant impact on the spurious oscillations in the finite-element solutions, and the spurious oscillations can be avoided in solving practical quasi-3-D groundwater flow problems if the criteria are satisfied. 展开更多

An interface capturing approach based on a level set function for simulating transient two-phase viscous incompressible flows is applied in this paper. A narrow-band signed distance function is adopted to indicate the phase fields and the interface. The multiphase flow is numerically solved by three stages with finite element method (FEM): (1) solving a two-fluid Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations over the whole domain, (2) transporting the level set function with the obtained velocity field, (3) the level set function correction through a renormalization with continuous penalization which preserves the thickness of the interface. In this paper, the 3-D water colunm collapse with an obstacle is simulated, which yielded good agreement with the experimental data. 展开更多

Overstraining gun tubes has a twofold advantage. First, it enables the increase of the Safe Maximum Pressure(SMP) in the tube, resulting in a higher muzzle velocity which extends the gun's range and its projectile kinetic energy. Second, it reduces the tube's susceptibility to internal cracking which prolongs its fatigue life. Unfortunately, autofrettage also bears an inherent detrimental effect as it considerably increases the tensile hoop stress at the outer portion of the barrel's wall, which enhances external cracking of the tube by increasing the prevailing Stress Intensity Factor(SIF). In order to quantify this disadvantageous effect, 3-D Mode I SIFs distributions along the front of a single external radial semielliptical crack initiating from the outer surface of an autofrettaged modern gun barrel, overstrained by either the Swage or the Hydraulic autofrettage processes, are evaluated. The analysis is performed by the finite element(FE) method, using singular elements along the crack front. Innovative residual stress fields(RSFs), incorporating the Bauschinger effect for both types of autofrettage are applied to the barrel.Hill's [1] RSF is also applied to the tube for comparison reasons. All three RSFs are incorporated in the FE analysis, using equivalent temperature fields, Values for K_(IA)-the SIF resulting from the tensile residual stresses induced by autofrettage are evaluated for: a typical barrel of radii ratio R_o/R_i = 2, crack depth to wall-thickness ratios(a/t = 0.005-0.1),crack ellipticities(a/c = 0.2-1.0),and five levels of Swage,Hydraulic and Hill's autofrettage(e = 40%,60%,70%,80%,and 100%). In total,375 different 3-D cases are analyzed. The analysis demonstrates undoubtedly the detrimental effect of all types of autofrettage in increasing the prevailing effective stress intensity factor of external cracks, resulting in crack initiation enhancement and crack growth rate acceleration which considerably shortens the total fatigue life of the barrel. Nonetheless, the detrimental effect is autofrettage-type dependent. Swage and Hydraulic autofrettage RSFs differ substantially from each other. The disadvantageous effect of Swage autofrettage is much greater than that resulting from Hydraulic autofrettage. The results also emphasize the significance of the Bauschinger effect and the importance of the 3-D analysis. 展开更多

The application of displacement and energy approaches to the determination of stress intensity factors in ultrasonic fatigue crack growth (fcg) studies is discussed. The particular advantages as well as the limitations of the two approaches are evaluated. Two types of ultrasonic fatigue loading with different stress ratios are exerted on the specimen respectively: the ultrasonic fatigue loading with a stress ratio R=-1 and the ultrasonic fatigue excitations superposed upon a static mean stress with R】-1 From comparison the conclusion is formed that the energy approach developed in the investigation is more accurate, concise and suitable than commonly adopted approaches and/or formulas proposed.Experimental fcg data on a titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V and the characteristic mechanism of the ultrasonic fcg are investigated. 展开更多
