Currently, numerical simulations of seismic channel waves for the advance detection of geological structures in coal mine roadways focus mainly on modeling two- dimensional wave fields and therefore cannot accurately simulate three-dimensional (3-D) full-wave fields or seismic records in a full-space observation system. In this study, we use the first-order velocity-stress staggered-grid finite difference algorithm to simulate 3-D full-wave fields with P-wave sources in front of coal mine roadways. We determine the three components of velocity Vx, Vy, and Vz for the same node in 3-D staggered-grid finite difference models by calculating the average value of Vy, and Vz of the nodes around the same node. We ascertain the wave patterns and their propagation characteristics in both symmetrical and asymmetric coal mine roadway models. Our simulation results indicate that the Rayleigh channel wave is stronger than the Love channel wave in front of the roadway face. The reflected Rayleigh waves from the roadway face are concentrated in the coal seam, release less energy to the roof and floor, and propagate for a longer distance. There are surface waves and refraction head waves around the roadway. In the seismic records, the Rayleigh wave energy is stronger than that of the Love channel wave along coal walls of the roadway, and the interference of the head waves and surface waves with the Rayleigh channel wave is weaker than with the Love channel wave. It is thus difficult to identify the Love channel wave in the seismic records. Increasing the depth of the receivers in the coal walls can effectively weaken the interference of surface waves with the Rayleigh channel wave, but cannot weaken the interference of surface waves with the Love channel wave. Our research results also suggest that the Love channel wave, which is often used to detect geological structures in coal mine stopes, is not suitable for detecting geological structures in front of coal mine roadways. Instead, the Rayleigh channel wave can be used for the advance detection of geological structures in coal mine roadways. 展开更多

Based on RNG k-ε turbulence model and sliding grid technique, solid-liquid two-phase three-dimensional(3-D) unsteady turbulence of full passage in slurry pump was simulated by means of Fluent software. The effects of unsteady flow characteristics on solid-liquid two-phase flow and pump performance were researched under design condition. The results show that clocking effect has a significant influence on the flow in pump, and the fluctuation of flow velocity and pressure is obvious, particularly near the volute tongue, at the position of small sections of volute and within diffuser. Clocking effect has a more influence on liquid-phase than on solid-phase, and the wake-jet structure of relative velocity of solid-phase is less obvious than liquid-phase near the volute tongue and the impeller passage outlet. The fluctuation of relative velocity of solid-phase flow is 7.6% smaller than liquid-phase flow at the impeller outlet on circular path. Head and radial forces of the impeller are 8.1% and 85.7% of fluctuation, respectively. The results provide a theoretical basis for further research for turbulence, improving efficient, reducing the hydraulic losses and wear. Finally, field tests were carried out to verify the operation and wear of slurry pump. 展开更多

Combined multi-body dynamics with structural dynamics, a new discrete element with flexible connector, which is applicable for 3-D beam structures, is developed in this paper. Both the generalized elastic coefficient matrix of the flexible connector and the mass matrix of discrete element may be off-diagonal in a general case. The zero-length rigid element is introduced to simulate the node at which multiple elements are jointed together. It may also be effective when the axes of adjacent elements are not in the same line. The examples for eigenvalue calculation show that the model is successful. It can be extended to the geometric nonlinear response analysis. 展开更多

Accurate 3-D fracture network model for rock mass in dam foundation is of vital importance for stability, grouting and seepage analysis of dam foundation. With the aim of reducing deviation between fracture network model and measured data,a 3-D fracture network dynamic modeling method based on error analysis was proposed.Firstly, errors of four fracture volume density estimation methods(proposed by ODA,KULATILAKE,MAULDON,and SONG)and that of four fracture size estimation methods(proposed by EINSTEIN,SONG and TONON)were respectively compared, and the optimal methods were determined.Additionally, error index representing the deviation between fracture network model and measured data was established with integrated use of fractal dimension and relative absolute error(RAE).On this basis, the downhill simplex method was used to build the dynamic modeling method, which takes the minimum of error index as objective function and dynamically adjusts the fracture density and size parameters to correct the error index. Finally, the 3-D fracture network model could be obtained which meets the requirements. The proposed method was applied for 3-D fractures simulation in Miao Wei hydropower project in China for feasibility verification and the error index reduced from 2.618 to 0.337. 展开更多

Line heating process is a very complex phenomenon as a variety of factors affects the amount of residual deformations. Numerical thermal and mechanical analysis of line heating for prediction of residual deformation is time consuming. In the present work dimensional analysis has been presented to obtain a new relationship between input parameters and resulting residual deformations during line heating process. The temperature distribution and residual deformations for 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm thick steel plates were numerically estimated and compared with experimental and published results. Extensive data generated through a validated FE model were used to find co-relationship between the input parameters and the resulting residual deformation by multiple regression analysis. The results obtained from the deformation equations developed in this work compared well with those of the FE analysis with a drop in the computation time in the order of 100 (computational time required for FE analysis is around 7 200 second to 9 000 seconds and where the time required for getting the residual deformation by developed equations is only 60 to 90 seconds). 展开更多

The spaceborne synthetic aperture radar(SAR)sparse flight 3-D imaging technology through multiple observations of the cross-track direction is designed to form the cross-track equivalent aperture, and achieve the third dimensionality recognition. In this paper, combined with the actual triple star orbits,a sparse flight spaceborne SAR 3-D imaging method based on the sparse spectrum of interferometry and the principal component analysis(PCA)is presented.Firstly, interferometric processing is utilized to reach an effective sparse representation of radar images in the frequency domain.Secondly,as a method with simple principle and fast calculation, the PCA is introduced to extract the main features of the image spectrum according to its principal characteristics. Finally, the 3-D image can be obtained by inverse transformation of the reconstructed spectrum by the PCA.The simulation results of 4.84 km equivalent cross-track aperture and corresponding 1.78 m cross-track resolution verify the effective suppression of this method on high-frequency sidelobe noise introduced by sparse flight with a sparsity of 49%and random noise introduced by the receiver.Meanwhile, due to the influence of orbit distribution of the actual triple star orbits, the simulation results of the sparse flight with the 7-bit Barker code orbits are given as a comparison and reference to illuminate the significance of orbit distribution for this reconstruction results. This method has prospects for sparse flight 3-D imaging in high latitude areas for its short revisit period. 展开更多

During recent years, the axial-flus PMSM with contra-rotating rotors has become a hot topic in academic research due to its high efficiency and simple structure. However, its back-EMF may be distorted under the condition of different angular positions. This paper investigates characteristics of the novel motor used for contra-propeller driving.Considering the torque ripple and current oscillation under unbalanced load condition, this paper analyzes the distorted back-EMF of the machine when its two rotors get different angular positions during rotating. The analysis results are validated by transient-magnetic 3-D FEA method, which the 3-D FEA software is used to model this motor and transient simulations are carried out to obtain its magnetic characteristic and main performances.A main focus is put on the back-EMF characteristic with different angular positions between the two rotors.Furthermore, the characteristic of torque production under unbalanced load is investigated. Finally,a prototype motor is fabricated to validate the analyses of this paper. 展开更多

To simplify its analysis, it is as-sumed that the failure probability of each node is independent. A 3-D mesh is partitioned into smaller submeshes, and then the probability with which each submesh satisfies the defined condition is computed. If each submesh satis-fies the condition, then the whole mesh is connected. Consequently, the probability that a 3-D mesh is connected iscomputed assuming each node has a failure probability. Mathematical methods are used to derive a relationship be-tween network node failure probability and network connectivity probability. The calculated results show that the 3-D mesh networks can remain connected with very high probability in practice. It is formally proved that when thenetwork node failure probability is boutded by 0.45 %, the 3-D mesh networks of more than three hundred thousandnodes remain connected with probability larger than 99 %. The theoretical results show that the method is a power-ful technique to calculate the lower bound of the connectivity probability of mesh networks. 展开更多

Assimilating satellite radiances into Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP) models has become an important approach to increase the accuracy of numerical weather forecasting. In this study, the assimilation technique scheme was employed in NOAA's STMAS(Space-Time Multiscale Analysis System) to assimilate AMSU-A radiances data.Channel selection sensitivity experiments were conducted on assimilated satellite data in the first place. Then, real case analysis of AMSU-A data assimilation was performed. The analysis results showed that, following assimilating of AMSU-A channels 5-11 in STMAS, the objective function quickly converged, and the channel vertical response was consistent with the AMSU-A weighting function distribution, which suggests that the channels can be used in the assimilation of satellite data in STMAS. With the case of the Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan Island in August 2009 as an example, experiments on assimilated and unassimilated AMSU-A radiances data were designed to analyze the impact of the assimilation of satellite data on STMAS. The results demonstrated that assimilation of AMSU-A data provided more accurate prediction of the precipitation region and intensity, and especially, it improved the 0-6h precipitation forecast significantly. 展开更多

This paper attempts to investigate the use of approximate 2D numerical simulation techniques for the evaluation of lignite pillar geomechanical response, formed via the room and pillar mining method.Performance and applicability of the developing methodology are assessed through benchmarking with a more direct and accurate 3D numerical model. This analysis utilizes an underground lignite mine which is being developed in soft rock environment. Through the decisions made for the optimum room and pillar layout, the design process highlights the strong points and the weaknesses of 2D finite element analysis, and provides useful recommendations for future reference. The interpretations of results demonstrate that 2D approximation techniques come near quite well to the actual 3D problem. However, external load approximation technique seems to fit even better with the respective outcomes from the 3D analyses. 展开更多

Flat subduction can significantly influence the distribution of volcanism, stress state, and surface topography of the overriding plate. However, the mechanisms for inducing flat subduction remain controversial.Previous two-dimensional(2-D)numerical models and laboratory analogue models suggested that a buoyant impactor(aseismic ridge, oceanic plateau,or the like)may induce flat subduction.However,three-dimensional(3-D)systematic studies on the relationship between flat subduction and buoyant blocks are still lacking. Here,we use a 3-D numerical model to investigate the influence of the aseismic ridge, especially its width(which is difficult to consider in 2-D numerical models),on the formation of flat subduction. Our model results suggest that the aseismic ridge needs to be wide and thick enough to induce flat subduction,a condition that is difficult to satisfy on the Earth. We also find that the subduction of an aseismic ridge parallel to the trench or a double aseismic ridge normal to the trench has a similar effect on super-wide aseismic ridge subduction in terms of causing flat subduction, which can explain the flat subduction observed beneath regions such as Chile and Peru. 展开更多

Large-scale,fine,and efficient numerical simulation of a geothermal field plays an important role in geothermal energy development.Confronted with the problem of large computation and high storage requirements for complex underground models in a three-dimensional(3-D)numerical simulation of a geothermal fi eld,a mixed space-wavenumber domain 3-D numerical simulation algorithm is proposed in this paper.According to the superposition principle of temperature field, the geothermal field is decomposed into background and abnormal temperature fi elds for calculation. The uniform layered model is used to solve the background field. When the abnormal field is solved, the horizontal two-dimensional(2-D)Fourier transform is used to transform the 3-D diff erential equation satisfi ed by an abnormal field into a series of one-dimensional ordinary differential equations with diff erent wavenumbers, which greatly reduces the calculation and storage. The unit division of an ordinary diff erential equation is fl exible, and the calculation amount is small. The algorithm fully takes advantage of the effi ciency of the Fourier transform and the quickness of the catch-up method to solve linear equations with a fixed bandwidth, which effectively improves the computational efficiency.Compared with the COMSOL Multiphysics professional simulation finite element software, the time consumption and memory requirements of the algorithm proposed in this paper are reduced by multiple orders of magnitude in terms of ensuring accuracy and the same mesh division. The more the number of calculated nodes is,the more obvious is the advantage. We design models to study the thermal conductivity, heat fl ux boundary, regional tectonic morphology, and topographic relief of the geothermal fi eld distribution.A 3-D geophysical model is developed based on topographic elevation data, geothermal geology, and geophysical exploration data in the Qiabuqia area of Gonghe Basin,Qinghai Province,China.Numerical simulation of the geothermal fi eld in this area is realized, which shows that the algorithm is suitable for precise and effi cient simulation of an arbitrary complex terrain and geological conditions. 展开更多

A 3D diagnostic model including a suspended sediment transport module, ECOMSED, driven by the monthly discharge and sediment load of the Yellow River in 1983 ~ 1984, was applied to the Bohai Sea. The simulation of the temporal-spatial variation of SPM (Suspended Particular Matter) concentration, sediment flux, and deposition rate was carfled out. It could be seen that, the SPM concentration exhibited distinct seasonal variation, and the variation characteristic was similar for two years. Some of the fine sediment of the Yellow River extended to the western bank of the Liaodong Bay, but most of the sediment deposited around the estuary of the Yellow River, the deposition flux rapidly decreasing with the increasing distance to the estuary. The deposition rate kept at 0.05 ~ 0.1 mm/a for most area, close to the insitu data. There were two areas of high SPM concentration in the Bohai Sea, one of which could be attributed to the Yellow River discharge, and another one, located at the seas with intensive resuspension power, to the tidal current energy. The sediment from the Yellow River was transported mainly along the track of the, Lagrangian residual cireulations. In one word, the suspended load transport was basically attributed to the wind-driven and tidal-induced Lagrangian residual circulations. The resuspenslon flux was related to the bottom currents: the larger the current speed, the more the sediment resuspended. 展开更多
