In order to safely exploit coal resource, protection coal pillars must be prepared in coal mines. Some correlative parameters of protection coal pillar are calculated by Drop face and Drop line methods. Models of protecting surface objects and coal pillars are established by TIN modeling and object-oriented technique. By using ACCESS2000as the database and the VC++ and OpenGL as the language, the calculation of protective coal pillars is realized and the 3D-visulizaiton system for protected objects on ground surface and for coal pillars is developed. The system can obtain the data of characteristic points on the surface interactively from the digitized mine topography map, constructing 3D model automatically. It can also obtain the interrelated parameters of the coal seam and drill hole data from existing geolog!cal surveying database to calculate the location, surface area and the total coal columns. The whole process can be computed quickly and accurately. And the 3D visualization system was applied in a mine, showing that the system solve the problem of complex calculation, not only realized the automatic 3D mapping and visualization of coal pillars for buildings protection, but also greatly improves the working efficiency. 展开更多

With the increase in mining depth, traditional coal mining methods not only waste coal resources but also seriously impact the stability of the roadway support structure during the collapse of the overburden rock.In contrast, the top-cutting and depressurization technology utilizes the expansion effect of the rock effectively. This technology allows the rock body to collapse entirely, filling up the mining area through active intervention, which reduces the subsidence height of the overburden rock and significantly improves the coal extraction rate in the mining area. This study utilizes 3D seismic exploration technology to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of fissure zones and rich zones of the rock strata in the mining area and investigate the movement law of overburdened rock during the coal seam mining process using the 110 mining method. It conducts numerical analysis combined with geomechanical modeling experiments to explore the movement law of the overburden rock under the influence of mining activities at Yuwang Coal Mine. The numerical analysis results indicate that the horizontal and vertical displacements of the rock body on the roof of the roadway are minimal when the angle of the slit is 75°.The overlying rock movement during the test is categorized by modeling the stress and strain fields into the following stages:fracture zone expansion, collapse zone gestation, rapid collapse zone development, and overlying rock stabilization. The rock on the cut side collapses more completely, breaking up and expanding to support the overburden, effectively reducing the depth of crack expansion and the extent of rock settlement and deformation. The integrity of the roadway roof remains intact during the rock collapse under NPR anchors. This study provides a scientific basis for understanding the movement law of overlying rock and for controlling the stability of the roadway perimeter rock in kilometer-deep underground mining. 展开更多

According to the characteristics of bore data,a model of 3D geologic body with generalized tri-prism as the primitive modeling element is constructed while the modeling process and key algorithms of modeling are presented here in detail.Using this method, the original bore data go through Delaunay triangulation to generate irregular triangular network on the surface, and then links stratum segments on the adjoining bores in session to form tri-prisms which would be pinched out. Finally stratified 3D geologic body model is built by an iterated search which searches for consecutive layer of the same property. The result shows that this method can effectively simulate stratified stratum modeling. 展开更多

Data acquisition and modeling are the two important, difficult and costful aspects in a Cybercity project. 2D-GIS is mature and can manage a lot of spatial data. Thus 3D-GIS should make the best of data and technology of 2D-GIS. Construction of a useful synthetic environment requires integration of multiple types of information like DEM, texture images and 3D representation of objects such as buildings. In this paper, the method for 3D city landscape data model and visualization based on integrated databases is presented. Since the data volume of raster are very huge, special strategies(for example, pyramid gridded method) must be adopted in order to manage raster data efficiently. Three different methods of data acquisition, the proper data structure and a simple modeling method are presented as well. At last, a pilot project of Shanghai Cybercity is illustrated. 展开更多

Different drill-hole positions may produce different drainage results in low protective coal seams. To investigate this possibility,a 3D stope model is established, which covers three kinds of drill holes. The FLUENT computational fluid mechanics software is used to solve the mass, momentum and species conservation equations of the model. The spatial distributions of oxygen and methane was obtained by calculations and the drainage results of different drill-hole positions were compared. The results show that, from top to bottom, methane dilution by oxygen weakens gradually from the intake to the return side, and methane tends to float;methane and oxygen distribute horizontally. The high-level crossing holes contribute to better methane drainage and a greater level of control.Around these holes, the methane density decreases dramatically and a "half circle"distribution is formed. The methane density decreases on the whole, but a proportion of the methane moves back to deep into the goaf. The research findings provide theoretical grounds for methane drainage. 展开更多

Strip mining is one of the efficient measures to control surface subsidence and mining damage. However, the researches on the laws of the geological mining factors to upper and lower pillar's stability are still deficient in multi-coal seam strip mining at present. Based on the three dimension fast Lagrangian analysis of continua (short for FLAC3D) numerical simulation software, the laws of the stress increasing coefficient on the coal pillar and its stability were systematically studied for different depths, different mining widths, different interlayer spacings, different mining thicknesses, different properties of interstratified rock and the spacial relations of the upper and lower pillars in vertical alignment in multi-coal seam strip mining. The function relation between the stress increasing coefficient of upper and lower pillars with the mining depth, mining widths, interlayer spacing, mining thickness, property of interstratified rock and the spatial relationship were obtained. 展开更多

Through the observation of 3D geological models, spatial structural information, connected with the information of production management hidden in geological data, could be detected. In order to meet the requirement of more efficient coal exploration, a case study of geological characters of the Daliuta Coal Mine is presented in which 3D visual models of the ground surface and geologic bodies are established on the basis of data models and data structures of 3D geology modeling. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) Through analysis and organization of spatial discrete data, the drillhole database is designed with the data of the Daliuta mine; the connections amomg drillhole data are real- ized and displayed in a 3D environment. (2) Combining real data of the Daliuta mine, drillhole visualization is realized in a 3D environment by using the CoalMiner system. (3) The ground surface modeling of the Daliuta coal mine adopted a surface-data model and a TIN data structure. (4) 3D models of coal seams and rock formations of the Daliuta mine are established, which provide a method for the simulation of complex surfaces of geologic bodies. In the end, the models are applied to the Daliuta coal mine and the result shows that better geological effects are obtained. 展开更多

Underground pipeline networks constitute a major component of urban infrastructure, and thus,it is imperative to have an efficient mechanism to manage them. This study introduces a secondary development system to efficiently model underground pipeline networks, using the building information modeling(BIM)-based software Revit. The system comprises separate pipe point and tubulation models.Using a Revit application programming interface(API),the spatial position and attribute data of the pipe points are extracted from a pipeline database, and the corresponding tubulation data are extracted from a tubulation database.Using the Family class in Revit API,the cluster in the self-built library of pipe point is inserted into the spatial location and the attribute data is added;in the same way,all pipeline instances in the pipeline system are created. The extension and localization of the model accelerated the modeling speed. The system was then used in a real construction project. The expansion of the model database and rapid modeling made the application of BIM technology in three-dimensional visualization of underground pipeline networks more convenient.Furthermore,it has applications in pipeline engineering construction and management. 展开更多

Computer modeling of geological faults in 3D is currently a topical research area. Structural modeling techniques of complex geological entities contain- ing reverse faults are discussed and a series of approaches are proposed. The geological concepts involved in computer modeling and visualization of geological fault in 3D are explained, the type of data of geological faults based on geo- logical exploration is analyzed, and a normative database format for geological faults is designed. Two kinds of model- ing approaches for faults are compared: a modeling technique of faults based on stratum recovery and a modeling tech- nique of faults based on interpolation in subareas. A novel approach, called the Unified Modeling Technique for stratum and fault, is presented to solve the puzzling problems of reverse faults, syn-sedimentary faults and faults terminated within geological models. A case study of a fault model of bed rock in the Beijing Olympic Green District is presented in order to show the practical result of this method. The principle and the process of computer modeling of geological faults in 3D are discussed and a series of applied technical proposals established. It strengthens our profound compre- hension of geological phenomena and the modeling approach, and establishes the basic techniques of 3D geological modeling for practical applications in the field of geosciences. 展开更多

The EGAT Mae Moh Mine is the largest open pit lignite mine in Thailand and it produces lignite about 16 million tons annually. In the near future, the pit limit of the mine will be reached and underground mine will then be developed through the open pit in the depth of 400 - 600 m from the surface. However, due to the challenges for underground mining such as poor geological conditions, extra thickness (20 - 30 m) of coal seams, and weak mechanical properties of coal seams and the surrounding rock, the success possibility of underground mining and an applicable underground mining method is being investigated at the present. The paper discusses the applicability of multi-slice bord-and-pillar method for the soft extra thick coal seams in the Mae Moh mine by means of numerical analyses using the 3D finite difference code “FLAC3D”. 展开更多

In this paper, the advantage of using numerical models with the strength reduction method(SRM) to evaluate entry stability in complex multiple-seam conditions is demonstrated.A coal mine under variable topography from the Central Appalachian region is used as a case study. At this mine, unexpected roof conditions were encountered during development below previously mined panels.Stress mapping and observation of ground conditions were used to quantify the success of entry support systems in three room-and-pillar panels.Numerical model analyses were initially conducted to estimate the stresses induced by the multiple-seam mining at the locations of the affected entries. The SRM was used to quantify the stability factor of the supported roof of the entries at selected locations. The SRM-calculated stability factors were compared with observations made during the site visits, and the results demonstrate that the SRM adequately identifies the unexpected roof conditions in this complex case.It is concluded that the SRM can be used to effectively evaluate the likely success of roof supports and the stability condition of entries in coal mines. 展开更多

Understanding the behavior of urban air pollution is important en route for sustainable urban development (SUD). Malaysia is on its mission to be a developed country by year 2020 comprehends dealing with air pollution is one of the indicators headed towards it. At present monitoring and managing air pollution in urban areas encompasses sophisticated air quality modeling and data acquisition. However, rapid developments in major cities cause difficulties in acquiring the city geometries. The existing method in acquiring city geometries data via ground or space measurement inspection such as field survey, photogrammetry, laser scanning, remote sensing or using architectural plans appears not to be practical because of its cost and efforts. Moreover, air monitoring stations deployed are intended for regional to global scale model whereby it is not accurate for urban areas with typical resolution of less than 2 km. Furthermore in urban areas, the pollutant dispersion movements are trapped between buildings initiating it to move vertically causing visualization complications which imply the limitations of existing visualization scheme that is based on two-dimensional (2D) framework. Therefore this paper aims is to perform groundwork assessment and discuss on the current scenario in Malaysia in the aspect of current policies towards SUD, air quality monitoring stations, scale model and detail discussion on air pollution dispersion model used called the Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM). This research proposed the implementation of three-dimensional (3D) spatial city model as a new physical data input for OSPM. The five Level of Details (LOD) of 3D spatial city model shows the scale applicability for the dispersion model implementtation. Subsequently 3D spatial city model data commonly available on the web, by having a unified data model shows the advantages in easy data acquisition, 3D visualization of air pollution dispersion and improves visual analysis of air quality monitoring in urban areas. 展开更多

Coal rock is a type of dual-porosity medium, which is composed of matrix pores and fracture-cutting matrix. They play different roles in the seepage and storage capacity of coal rock. Therefore, constructing the micropore structure of coal rock is very important in the exploration and development of coalbed methane. In this study,we use a coal rock digital core and three-dimensional modeling to study the pore structure of coal rock.First, the micropore structure of coal rock is quantitatively analyzed using a two-dimensional thin-section image, and the quantitative information of the pore and fracture(cleat)structure in the coal rock is extracted. The mean value and standard deviation of the face porosity and pore radius are obtained using statistical analysis. The number of pores is determined using dichotomy and spherical random-packing methods based on compression.By combining with the results of the petrophysical analysis, the single-porosity structure model of the coal rock is obtained using a nonequal-diameter sphere to represent the pores of the coal rock. Then,an ellipsoid with an aspect ratio that is very much lesser than one is used to represent the fracture(cleat)in the coal rock, and a dual-pore structure model of the coal rock is obtained. On this basis, the relationship between the different pore aspect ratios and porosity is explored, and a fitting relationship is obtained. The results show that a nonlinear relationship exists between them. The relationship model can provide a basis for the prediction of coal rock pore structure and the pore structure parameters and provide a reference for understanding the internal structure of coalbed methane reservoirs. 展开更多

This study proposes a detailed concept of how landscape changes can be transferred and communicated in a 3D environment using the storytelling approach. In 2018, Mocnik and Fairbairn argued that maps are good for representing a geographic space but texts have a better benefit than maps for telling a story [1]. A framework is presented on how a landscape change can be retrieved out of textual descriptions. A prototype of a 3D model with a projection on top of it was developed. The case study tells the story of the landscape change in the city of Pristina. The key element of the visualization is a timeline. Several media like cadastral maps, orthophotos, texts, graphics, and background sound are used and combined in an animated light show and the visualization was evaluated within a user study. 展开更多
