The integration of cross-cultural inquiries into the realm of translation has given rise to a distinct subfield known as cross-cultural translation studies. This approach emphasizes the importance of delving into the cultural subtleties and the awareness of cultural subjectivity within the translation process.Central to this framework is the concept of reshaping cultural nuances and the subjectivity of culture. This paper introduces three principal translation strategies that emerge from a cross-cultural standpoint:the alienation translation strategy, the‘cannibalism’translation strategy, and the destructive translation strategy.Utilizing the English translation of“Dream of the Red Chamber”as a case study, the paper examines how cultural nuances and cultural subjectivity influence the selection of translation strategies and demonstrates the practical application of cross-cultural research within the translation sphere.Hence, the significance of cross-cultural translation studies lies in its capacity to offer a novel lens through which to view translation studies. It encourages a reevaluation of cultural nuances and subjectivity in translation, which is of profound practical importance for advancing the field of translation studies, enhancing cross-cultural communication, and facilitating the spread of Chinese discourse on the global stage. 展开更多

It can be divided into two approaches to culture involved in translation: SL culture-oriented and TL culture-oriented.This kind of classification is based on the analysis of translation of cultural loaded words and expressions in the two English versions( Xianyi Yang& Gladys Yang and David Hawkes) of the Chinese classical novel A Dream of Red Mansion. The analysis leads to the conclusion that both methods can achieve the goal in the target language culture as long as the differences are taken into consideration in the purpose of translation, the form of the texts, the purpose of the author and the readers. 展开更多

Both the study of metaphor and translation has taken an empirical turn in the past decade,corpus-based method has provided a practical and objective way for investigating metaphor translation from a comparative and cognitive perspective. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the cognitive differences in the perception of“root”between English and Chinese through a contrastive analysis of the two English translations of a Chinese classic novel—Dream of the Red Mansion, the two translations are completed by a native Chinese speaker and a native English speaker respectively. The study is divided into two parts, the first part is devoted to a contrastive analysis of typical examples selected from the data acquired from the online English-Chinese parallel corpus with the online corpus analysis tool Wmatrix, two deductions have been drawn through the analysis concerning the cognition difference in root perception:(1)the integral perception of root and a plant in Chinese VS the binary cognition in English;(2)the concreteness of“root”metaphor in Chinese VS the abstractness in“root”metaphor application in English. Then the two deductions are further demonstrated through corpus-assisted study of“root”metaphor in large online corpuses. The differences in root metaphor usage as well as the cognitive reasons behind the differences have been investigated with emphasis not only on the dominant conceptual root metaphors, but also the semantic preference of the collocated words of the metaphors. 展开更多
